The Christian life is a battle – a continuous fight against the devil’s weapons of doubt, temptation and worldliness. He is far more powerful than we are, but God has given us a weapon against which he cannot stand! The armour of God starts and ends with the belt of truth and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:14-17). In his book When I Don’t Desire God, John Piper exhorts the reader to take up Bible memorization to stand against our adversary: “The joy-producing effects of memorizing Scripture and having it in my head and heart are incalculable. The world and its God-ignoring, all-embracing secularism is pervasive. It invades my mind every day. What hope is there to have a mind filled with Christ except to have a mind filled with his Word?
