## What is BikeOtter for Bike Computers?

BikeOtter is a companion app for the Wahoo ELEMNT (BOLT, ROAM and ACE). It talks to the head unit over the unit's own Bluetooth protocol — there is no vendor cloud in the middle, no second account to make, and no cable.

PLAN A ROUTE, WITH THE STOPS YOU ACTUALLY NEED
Build a route on your phone, or import a GPX. Drop in water, food, toilets, shelter or a bike shop straight off the map and see what each one is before you decide to detour to it.

SEND IT TO THE HEAD UNIT
Push the route to your ELEMNT over Bluetooth and it appears in the unit's saved routes — with your stops still on it. Already riding something? BikeOtter reads back the course the unit has loaded, so the phone and the head unit agree about where you are going.

PULL YOUR RIDES BACK
Download a finished ride off the device as a .fit file, look at it, keep it, or turn it straight back into a route to ride again. Hand it to Strava automatically if you want to.

PUT THE WEATHER ON THE SCREEN
See rain and wind along the route before you leave, and have BikeOtter write a warning onto the head unit's display while you ride — rain in twenty minutes, a headwind on the next leg, a climb worth saving something for.

YOUR OWN RULES
Pick a trigger — every so many minutes or kilometres, or a grade, heart-rate or temperature threshold — and BikeOtter writes your own message to the ELEMNT's screen when it fires. Including a sunscreen reminder that follows the actual UV index.

NOTIFICATIONS, ON YOUR TERMS
Forward phone notifications to the head unit from only the apps you choose. Nothing is forwarded until you say so.

SHARE WHERE YOU ARE
Give someone a link and they see you move on a map, with your route and how much of it is left. The link keeps working when your phone loses signal and comes back.

FREE, AND WHAT PLUS ADDS
Sending routes, pulling rides, Strava, ride alerts, live sharing and joining a group ride are free. BikeOtter Plus, a subscription or a one-time purchase, adds the parts that run on servers or build on them: route weather and rain radar, address search and the route planner, stops along the route, turn-cue control, your own rules, hosting a group ride and offline maps. Most of them can be tried a few times before Plus is asked for.

BikeOtter is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Wahoo Fitness or Garmin. "Wahoo", "ELEMNT", "Garmin" and "Edge" are trademarks of their respective owners and are used here only to say which hardware this app works with.

You need a Wahoo ELEMNT bike computer to use most of this app. Garmin Edge support is experimental: pairing and sending routes work on a real Edge 540; pulling rides back is built but not yet confirmed on one, and the rest is still being built.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.2.1 — 2026-10-27

• Fix: a Garmin Edge you gave your own name (say "Nav") is found again when the phone is already connected to it.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-10-13

• Plan routes in the browser at bikeotter.app/plan. Your routes sync between the website and the app — on by itself with Plus — and "Send to my unit" from the website lands on your head unit.
• The route planner in the app is free now, for everyone.
• Several bikes: keep a profile per bike and pick one in Settings or on the route sheet.
• Pinch the climb profile to zoom into a stretch and the map frames it; the scrub shows how much you have climbed so far.
• Races: share a public "race this too" link, keep a race invite-only, and edit it on race day. Stopping the recording mid-race ends the race and opens the summary.
• Group rides can take up to 50 riders. A ride organised by a club shows who organised it, and joining a planned ride goes live by itself when it starts.
• Pick how often each head unit gets live updates, to save its battery.
• The nearest head unit is listed first, and you can forget one you no longer use.
• Garmin: watches show up in a scan (experimental), Connect IQ apps can reach the web through BikeOtter, and courses are written the way Garmin expects.
• Fixes: road bike routes avoid busy roads, "my location" uses the phone, an update no longer nags in a loop, and sending a route waits for a ride download already running.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-09-30

• Race mode: a lap race among friends, on the head unit. Set the laps and the start line on a looped route; lap times and "Anna 140 m ahead" land on your ELEMNT or Edge. Hosting is Plus; racing and watching are free.
• Started riding without a route? BikeOtter recognises your usual one and puts it on the head unit in one tap, or plans the way back.
• "BikeOtter saved your ride" shows on the head unit once the ride is on your phone, with the batteries left.
• After a race the warm-up comes off before Strava: only the race is uploaded, with a lap for every race lap, and a summary shows everyone's laps.
• With no route loaded, find water, food, coffee, a bike shop or a toilet nearby and get a route there.
• Plus keeps your settings in your account and restores them on a new phone.
• A group invite sent by mail survives installing the app: it is waiting for you once you sign in with that address, or paste the link.
• Group rides and races start from one menu on the route, with Share beside it.
• Find the Facebook group and r/BikeOtter under About.
• The app no longer offers to send workouts or saved places to an ELEMNT — the unit does not take them from a phone — and the self-test explains every result.
• Fixes: sending a route to an ELEMNT is more reliable on every phone, the rain-radar switch hides for a ride planned too far ahead, and the idle Ride screen and the settings line up.

### 1.0.10 — 2026-09-29

• A new look, everywhere. Every screen is drawn like a stage route book: ruled sections and pen marks instead of boxes and badges, so what matters on a screen is what your eye lands on first.
• Before you ride: what to wear, what to bring and what to pump the tyres to, for the weather your route actually rides into.
• Share a route to BikeOtter straight out of Google or Apple Maps and it lands in your library.
• No head unit connected yet? The Ride tab keeps the route queued and sends it the moment one is.
• Stops and places wear their category on the map and on the climb profile.
• The app holds together at the largest text sizes, every control is big enough to hit, colours carry the contrast they should, and a screen reader now names everything on screen.
• German, French, Italian, Spanish and Polish all the way down — no English sentences left in a translated app, and the spoken alerts and the weather advice are in your language too.
• A screenshot can travel with a support message.
• Fixes: an inner tube is the default tyre setup again, dialogs open centred, and the headwind warning waits for a real headwind.

### 1.0.7 — 2026-09-24

• Bike radar. Pair a Garmin Varia or Bryton Gardia and hear a tone when a vehicle comes up behind you, more urgent if it is closing fast. Your bike computer keeps its own radar link over ANT+.
• The radar card says when it cannot warn you: no headset, or a radar that reports distance but not speed.
• One tone per vehicle, not per reading — and none while you are stopped.
