### 2/5 — Needs a lot more bike racks

*2024-12-13*

I find it ridiculous they charge you for parking it on a public bike rack if it isn’t a BIKETOWN station. They don’t mention that part until you’ve already unlocked the bike. Either put in a lot more stations or get rid of this fee . I understand needing to keep people from ditching the bikes in random places but there are better ways to do it

### 3/5 — Ok

*2024-01-13, version 15.40.3*

It’s adequate

### 1/5 — Not City Wide

*2022-09-30, version 14.49.31*

I seen a bunch of these in Beaverton. Yet they are not showing on the app. Specifically at Millikan Max station stop.

### 1/5 — This is a scam! Keeps charging 25$ fines

*2022-06-09, version 14.33.3*

Nice idea, but everytime you pause your ride, it locks your bike and then charges you a 25$ fine for “leaving it in the wrong place”!
Horrible UX!

### 4/5 — There’s a glitch when looking at train and bus.

*2022-05-07, version 14.28.3*

It won’t stay on the train and bus part of the app. It shows it for approximately 5 seconds and goes back to Nike bikes.

### 3/5 — 75%

*2021-08-19, version 13.91.3*

When it works it’s great. That’s about 3 out of 4 times… with the 4th being after a five mile ride and then it won’t unlock.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2021-04-02*

I’ve had a problem for weeks now where I receive an error message saying “please try again later” whether trying to scan the bike QR or reserve online. I’ve tried contacting customer service about this, but every time I do I get forwarded to a new person who clearly hasn’t read my email and just states that I should already do what I’ve been doing. At this point I’m just exhausted with trying the non-functioning app and typing out the issue explanation for your “help” group to not read, really terrible customer service and overall experience.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2020-10-16, version 13.47.3*

This app consistently fails to find stations and bikes. Won’t connect on WiFi or cellular. Needs to be deleted and reinstalled before each use. Do not rely on this for a commute.

### 4/5 — What a blast!

*2020-10-02*

Super fun! I haven't ridden a bike for years, but for 2 bucks I was compelled to hop on. I logged a 2.36 mile bike ride in 30 minutes. Felt great! Cons: Because of the newness, be prepared to answer lots of questions by people on the street (and to be polite, you can't say "sorry, I'm paying for this bike by the minute, can't talk!" Also you can't rent 2 bikes at once on one person's app. My husband's minutes were ticking away as I had to pull out my own phone to download the app, set up my own account, enter credit card, etc. That was a drag!

### 1/5 — HORRIBLE Lyft take over of Biketowm

*2020-09-24*

When Lyft took over BIKETOWN they robbed my acct of 100 dollars. I had all the screenshots called them repeatedly, sent all the screenshots, receipts etc. They continually gave me the run around, which never happened before Lyft took over, said they’d email me about it, never happened; said they’d call in 24hrs twice, never happened, twice; said it’d take 5-7 business days, well here we are 1.5 MONTHS later. I liked the old bikes because it was a bike like an actual bike that provided you exercise. These electric bikes defeat the purpose and I’m a yearly member and THEY TOOK AWAY THE FREE 1.5 hrs a day if you’re a yearly member. The pricing is horrendous and way overly priced. Lyft ruined biketown, I’m just going to get a regular bike now, don’t waste your money or time on these “bikes.” This isn’t going to last long anyway so don’t buy a membership either, they’ll definitely ghost with your money too when this expensive new bs flops.

### 2/5 — Wish I had reviewed before the e-bikes 😭

*2020-09-23*

Listen, I used to adore the bikeshare bikes! Yes it had its frustrations - the keypad, ghost bikes - but I figured out how to make it work. What a dream to cruise around Portland streets on those bikes. It kept me sane in the winter. The price point was reasonable.

I like riding bikes for the physical exertion. I want it to be exercise. E-bikes totally eliminate the joy of riding a bicycle. I can’t choose which gear, and I do no work. I just mindlessly rotate the wheels like a hampster. Okay, fine, going up a hill on it is fun. But it would be great if a rider had some manual control over speed and exertion.

I guess e-bikes are for lazy people and I’m a Luddite. The new app has no legend to tell users what is what on the system map. It’s like they want it to fail. What a shame.

### 1/5 — Ruined the Experience

*2020-09-09*

Absolutely ruined the app. I used to use BIKETOWN very regularly and will now stop since the changes you have made. You all got greedy and now have to pay much more than you did previously. I originally had the monthly plan, but you’ve now stopped that and are only allowing annually or by ride. Previously you used to be able to pay a monthly fee and then have a certain amount of free time each day without being charged. But now either way you have to pay to unlock a bike and for every minute you use the bike. I’m very disappointed.

### 1/5 — Station map

*2020-08-10, version 1.9.0*

Out of towner who downloaded the app to bike around Portland. I can’t see where the stations are mid ride so I can dock for free

### 4/5 — Good, Room to Improve

*2020-07-15, version 1.7.1*

Great overall, but lots of bike maintenance issues. I always report any issues in hopes that the bikes actually get fixed.

### 1/5 — Bikes never work

*2020-01-24, version 1.7.1*

The bikes constantly have issues, always saying out of service, cellular connection is super slow. Half the time I lose time reserving a bike only to find out it is out of service.

### 1/5 — Does not work. They are stilling from us.

*2019-11-30, version 1.7.1*

I needed a quick ride and spent the $5 to start an account. It did not work. My friend and I both tried. I was in a hurry and only tried for about 2 minutes. There was a bird scooter. That worked great. Definitely don’t use the bike go for the scooter.

### 2/5 — Heavy bikes, annoying unlock process

*2019-11-06, version 1.7.1*

Keypads on bikes are very difficult to use (require very firm presses, can’t enter numbers too quickly), especially compared with scan&ride scooters.

Going up hills with these heavy bikes is also a doozy.

Overall, pricing is reasonable but the app needs some serious TLC. I would like to at least use Apple Wallet to enter my account number and unlock a bike.

### 1/5 — Slow App, Bikes Don’t Work, won’t let me unsubscribe

*2019-09-21, version 1.7.0*

I tried to rent a bike with this app, but after I painfully set it up it wouldn’t let me unlock a bike. Now as I am trying to unsubscribe the app seems determined to keep my money. 0/10 awful app, just want my money back

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — RIDE WON’T END

*2026-08-18, version 2026.31.3*

Don’t be surprised when your trip/session doesn’t end once you lock it up at your destination. It’s happened three times to me already, frustrating and obviously maximizing profit from customers who deserve better. Please save yourself the time & stress and don’t use these bikes.

### 1/5 — Awfully unfair

*2026-04-17, version 2026.13.31*

I find a bike in an area outside the green zone just on the sidewalk- as I scan I’m not warned that it will ACTIVELY fight me as I bike it back to a station. Essentially I returned an abandoned bike as it actively fought me AND IT CHARGES 17 dollars? ARE YOU INSANE? I’ll just uber next time. #### Lift and BIKETOWN

### 1/5 — Terrible customer support, lime resolved same issue with no lip service

*2025-10-20*

Even though I prefer the functionality of Biketown scooters over Lime scooters, I will always choose Lime over Biketown because their customer support near-instantly resolved a problem Biketown would not fix.

Biketown support refused to end my ride or acknowledge that I was in a parking zone when my location in the app was inaccurate, even after sending a photo of the scooter locked in front of the biketown/lime parking sign. They kept telling me things like “move closer to the parking zone” when I couldn’t possibly get any closer, and the app showed me 20 feet over in the street. They said they couldn’t remotely end my ride and it’d automatically end after 25 hours. This was unacceptable because I was supposed to be leaving on a camping trip with no cell service. I had to ride the scooter about half a mile away to park it and walk back, turning a 10-minute ride into a 45-minute ordeal. I nearly missed the trip as a result.

A week later, I ran into the same issue with Lime, and after I messaged support my ride was ended near-instantly with zero back-and-forth.

Additionally, there is no simple way to report being unable to start a ride and I was charged to unlock a non-functioning scooter. Lime makes it easy to report this issue.

I was also forced to walk a mile at 1am after the app wouldn’t load scooter locations or scan scooters directly in front of me despite my internet working perfectly.

### 1/5 — Not working two days, nor customer service

*2024-12-21, version 2024.48.3*

App not working, tried everything included reinstalling. Now disappeared from Home Screen. No help available. Had grown used to it now unusable.

### 1/5 — Charged for Errors A LOT

*2024-11-04, version 2024.42.3*

Sometimes when I hit the resume button on my app the app ends the ride instead, charging me for parking. This has happened several times including today, and customer service refuses to do anything about it. They just say sorry. Don’t waste your time getting sneakily charged.

### 1/5 — This is a dangerous scooter

*2024-08-29*

I love using e-scooters to get around. Lime was frustrating at first but ended up working great.

-You are charged for ALL the reservation time, even if you got to the scooter within the time limit.

- You can never not have a $1 parking fee, even if you park in their "designated" areas that are shown on the map.

-BIKETOWN uses all fees possible to try and get the most money from you while claiming to be 2¢ cheaper per minute.

- Rides are consistently $2-$2.50 more expensive than Lime rides for the same short route.

- The scooters are extremely wobbly and unstable. The handlebars are way too close to your torso, which causes unbalance.

-The forced braking when going down hills is straight up dangerous. If my scooter is going too fast the braking needs to be gentle. Not a hard stop going down a hill at who knows how fast.

All that said I will be going out of my way to not use this product.

### 1/5 — Awful scooter experience

*2024-08-18, version 15.71.3*

In a <1 mile ride, my scooter was fully stopped twice in the middle of the street due to bad geolocation placing me in a park that I wasn’t in. Then charged an extra $1 for out of station parking on a scooter. Why anyone would choose this over lime is beyond me, I certainly won’t again.

### 1/5 — Completely unreliable, worst bikeshare

*2024-04-03*

I’ve had a yearly membership and this will be my last year. 80% of the experience has been unlocking a bike that then runs out of batteries in 3 blocks, leaving you to either stop and try to find another station and another bike, or try to ride this monstrosity of a bike to your destination which is an insane amount of energy if you’ve ever tried to ride a dead e-bike. Then there is no place in the app to report that the bike battery is dead so you inevitably subject the next person to a dead bike battery too, and you’ve paid $5 for the luxury of being late to whatever you’re going to or arriving in a sweaty disgusting mess because you decided to ride a dead bike. It’s insane that they don’t disable bikes that are out or extremely low on battery and everyone I’ve talked to who has tried Biketown has had the same experience. Too bad!

### 1/5 — Motor inconsistent

*2023-09-10, version 15.22.3*

I used a BIKETOWN e-bike in Portland. The motor assist quit suddenly twice while climbing hills. And then it flipped on strong unexpectedly on a mild ascent. I did not feel safe based on these incidents. And when I tried to report it on the app, the only five options for naming the problem did not include motor malfunction. Very disappointed, especially because it’s an expensive rental at 30 cents a minute.

### 1/5 — Hidden fines

*2023-08-31, version 15.21.3*

Horrible service. You can be charged $25 for parking ‘incorrectly’. Rude customer service. Many bikes are in poor condition and hardly roadworthy. Vandalised bikes are common. Not worth your time.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — great service

*2023-03-22, version 14.74.3*

App works very well. Would love to see HealthKit integration.

### 5/5 — icodyp

*2022-09-26*

This app saved me from homelessness. I was able to get approved for the biketown for ALL program and I used the bike for door dash and made enough money to rent a car and take door dash to the next level and eventually I got into a room for rent after a couple of weeks. Seriously you guys at Lyft ARE THE GOOD GUYS. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL. Once I get my own car I’ll definitely be driving for Lyft again. #teamlyft💪🏼

### 5/5 — Easy and reasonable

*2019-08-25*

My wife and kids rented 4 bikes in Portland.

The process was very easy.

There weren’t any hidden fees. The price was as advertised.

### 5/5 — App worked well

*2018-07-30, version 1.3.7*

App worked well, number pad on many bikes are worn and not easy to operate.

### 5/5 — BIKETOWN experience

*2018-07-21, version 1.3.7*

Rode across the Tilikum Bridge today and the bikes were all over the place. I was able to find bikes easily.

### 5/5 — BIKETOWN PDX

*2018-07-21, version 1.3.7*

We just got off these bikes and had so much fun! Easy to get on and off!

### 5/5 — Good, reliable, accessible

*2018-07-14, version 1.3.7*

I’m very thankful Nike and Portland provide this awesome service!

### 5/5 — Tips for Non-Locals

*2018-07-09, version 1.3.7*

Tips from an Austinite

1. The buttons on the keypad are REALLY hard to press, but they work.

2. The U-lock is kinda heavy, make sure to tilt the bike enough when you re-rack it.

3. THE BIKE is heavy (I’m 5’1 105lbs., so yeah,)

4. Once you start cruising, its pretty awesome. Beware of uphills though!

5. The app isn’t great for GPS/Navigating.

Overall, I’d say it’s worth your five bucks!

### 5/5 — Great for out of towners!

*2018-04-20, version 1.3.5*

Used as my principal mode of transportation while visiting Portland. Great way to see this awesome city.

### 5/5 — Sunny days in PDX

*2018-03-21, version 1.3.5*

Such a great simple experience.
The app makes it simple for last minute adventures. I really needed a simple adventure out. Spent $5 to cruise a beautiful 6 miles down the waterfront. Simple pleasant and enjoyed
