### 3/5 — Battery Indicator Does Not Work

*2022-07-10, version 2.1*

I’ve had the Base Camp Lantern XL for 5 years and use it sparingly. The lamp works ok, but the app is supposed to tell you how much life is left on the battery charge and it does not even come close to how much the lantern says it does. This wasn’t always the case… when it was brand new it worked. It’d be nice if BioLite would update the app or offer a fix but it looks like they have a habit of abandoning their products and discontinuing support for them.

### 3/5 — White color spectrum issues

*2021-03-02, version 2.1*

Nice app except for the white color tone spectrum which can only be adjusted if you save it as a shortcut. No matter where you move the dial, the lamp shines cold bright light instead of the warm tones selected. Pls fix.

### 3/5 — Biolite App

*2020-10-01, version 2.1*

Why doesn’t the music option show up as light options on the app

### 4/5 — Does what you expect

*2020-09-22, version 2.1*

Had one odd crash otherwise 5 star

### 2/5 — Completely inaccurate battery readings

*2020-07-21, version 2.1*

I can’t honestly say that a companion app was a major consideration in my decision to purchase my BioLite BaseLantern XL, but it was a neat feature I looked forward to trying. Unfortunately, I found the experience lacking.

I particularly liked that the app is supposed to provide a realtime readout of how many hours and minutes are left in the battery. The lantern, itself, has battery indicators that might give you a rough idea, but the fact that it has multiple modes that use different amounts of power, as well as the ability to charge/power external devices, means that 50% battery remaining could mean very different things depending on how the device is being used at the time.

After fully charging the lantern, I was surprised to find that the app indicated only 27 minutes of battery remaining with no external devices plugged in. I let the lantern and app run for a few hours to see if they needed to perform some sort of calibration, but the time remaining just jumped around between the 15-50 minute range. Fortunately, the app was wrong and the lantern lasts significantly longer that 27 minutes on a full battery, but, unfortunately, this feature of the app has proved completely useless. I was further disappointed to find that others have expressed concerns with this feature not working, but that BioLite hasn’t updated the app in over a year.

Beyond this glaring issue, the app is pretty clumsy in layout (it really shouldn’t be difficult to locate any of the functions in an app that is designed to control a lightbulb), but it otherwise does the other things it is supposed to do.

It’s a little over-the-top to make a lantern with Bluetooth and a companion app, but BioLite did it - and more importantly, they included functions in the lantern that can only be accessed through the app - so they really should make sure the app works, and they really should update it at least somewhat regularly.

As a side-note, some websites say that you can use the app to set the lantern to strobe to your music. BioLite appears to have removed this feature from the app. This feature doesn’t interest me, but it is concerning to see that BioLite has actually removed features from the app and lantern, since a few people may have actually bought the lantern for that feature.

### 1/5 — App has potential, but...

*2020-07-05, version 2.1*

I thought the app and all the features they advertised would be pretty neat but the app is a true let down. The BPM feature that is advertised in their YouTube videos is gone and the battery monitoring doesn’t work. There’s so much potential to add customization but you can’t really do anything other than dim the light and change the colour. Proximity feature is kinda useless because as soon as you get too far it loses connection anyway. Hope they put some more effort into this and fix it up because it could be way cooler.

### 1/5 — Bpm mode?

*2020-06-24, version 2.1*

How do I get this option to show up??

### 3/5 — I love biolite!!

*2020-06-17, version 2.1*

I love my Biolite. The app overall is kinda useless, except if you’re new to the fire pit, as the app lets you control the fan speed from your device and shows you how the different fan settings affect the battery life and exactly how much life is left in the battery by time. So I like it for that.
Once you get a feel for it and how it works with the different settings you won’t need the app. But again, good in the beginning.

### 3/5 — not accurate

*2020-06-05, version 2.1*

I’ve contacted Biolite about their app showing only 18-36 mins remaining while the actual lantern shows it’s fully charged. They said they are aware of it and hope to fix it on their next app update. well it’s been 11 months since their last update. Also they said to trust the unit leds to show how much power is left. well I drained and fully charged it 3 times so far and the unit only gives me only 4 hours on high and nowhere near 7.5 hours as advertised on their website and or packaging. They also removed the bpm feature that used to sync with your music. btw I’ve tested two new units so far. the first one only gave me 3 hours of light on high. tech support answers once a week if you’re lucky. so not much help there. It’s a nicely put together lamp with nice features. just wished the co spent a little more time fixing the bugs. almost a year later and no updates to their app? ridiculous.

### 1/5 — Badly needs an update.

*2020-04-05, version 2.1*

The app is slow and janky at best.

### 2/5 — Keep working on the app

*2020-03-12, version 2.1*

This rating is for the app; it needs lots of work guys so keep working at it. The main 4 issues with the app is Bluetooth connection lags, proximity sensor doesn’t work well, battery life time doesn’t display correctly, and light controls need fine tuning. The product itself (BaseLantern in my case) is well designed physically and works well.

### 2/5 — Fehlerhaft

*2020-02-11, version 2.1*

Mit dem iPhone 11 und der Version 13 von iOS funktionieren die personalisierten Einstellungen nicht. Bitte nachbessern!

### 2/5 — BPM Match

*2019-12-27, version 2.1*

The app does not have BPM match as indicated... please update the app to have the features you say it will have!

### 2/5 — Nothing more than an expensive flashlight

*2019-12-10, version 2.1*

Just unboxed for a upcoming backpacking trip. The app continues to crash even though I have tried a dozen times to reinstall. The proximity sensor is useless. You have to reconnect the Bluetooth just to get the light to come on when you are in Bluetooth range. 2 stars out of 5.

### 2/5 — App needs work for sure

*2019-11-16, version 2.1*

The app is well designed but unfortunately has a few very annoying issues.

The main couple for me are:

It doesn’t automatically connect to your base lantern, you need to do it what feels like -every- time you open the app.

It doesn’t show the current battery percentage unless you plug it into power

The ‘time left’ thing at the top doesn’t work in the slightest bit. It either says 0H 00min or 30 minutes or 11 minutes, but the battery is completely full so I don’t know how it gets that figure.

For me, these issues need to be fixed, otherwise they’ve obviously put a lot of work and time in to the app but have some fatal flaws unfortunately

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2026-05-28, version 2.1*

I was an early adopter on BioLite products and loved this app when it came out it has only gotten worse with every update and hasn’t even been updated in more than 6 years I still use my BioLite lights that “work” with the app not sure how it works with the fire pit as I don’t have one but on to what’s wrong

Flickering when changing colors

Battery completely inaccurate - use to work great

Charging completely inaccurate - again use to work pretty well

I guess the app’s been forgotten about but not sure why as the fire pit is still available

### 1/5 — No help

*2025-06-09, version 2.1*

This app does nothing. Any advice? I’m going to delete it.

### 1/5 — Needs an update

*2023-12-03, version 2.1*

Definitely need an update

So many things are buggy

Very disappointing

### 1/5 — Trash

*2023-11-22, version 2.1*

The Bluetooth never connects to the battery pack and the battery pack never turns off. You can not turn the fan on. Bio lite does not have good products

### 1/5 — Horrible App. Doesn’t Reflect Well On The Company

*2022-10-30, version 2.1*

I’ve spent a lot of money on Biolite products only to realize they offer zero support. The app to the base lantern xl hasn’t been updated in YEARS! What started as a great idea, company with excellent products is fizzing out and letting their customers down. There is a lot of other products out there that I’d rather buy now.

Nothing the app is supposed to do works. The lamp is nothing more than a heavy brick with light.

I’m not buying from these charlatans ever again.

### 1/5 — Requires an update and overhaul

*2021-09-02, version 2.1*

Not sure what’s going on with the app but it’s not working. Went to use the app to control the base Lantern XL only for it to not be able to find my unit, but somehow was able to find six (6!)others. What is going on BioLite?

### 1/5 — App is not stable

*2021-04-02, version 2.1*

Constantly have to re-pair which means that the proximity control is virtually worthless. Gives completely inaccurate readings as to remaining battery life.

### 1/5 — Decent app, but major bug with remaining charge

*2020-12-17, version 2.1*

The app has some useful functionality for dimming and brightening the light, plus the ability to store preferred settings for different moods.

My main grievance with the current version is that it only ever indicates between 20-40 mins of charge left on the lantern even when fully charged.

This is going to make it really hard for us to understand how much battery power we’re consuming while we’re away camping for the next 3 weeks - which is the main reason we chose to buy it.

Would appreciate a fix for this asap, but judging from the update release history it looks likely there are only yearly releases - so I don’t hold out much hope.

### 1/5 — Won’t pair

*2020-08-22, version 2.1*

I have so much trouble getting my lantern paired with my phone. I have tried deleting and re-installing the app, turning off Bluetooth and turning back on, searched multiple times with the app and lantern on. Nothing. Says it can’t find any BaseCamp lanterns. So frustrating. And the FAQs and tutorials offer no advice on this. What’s the deal? I have held my phone right on top of the lantern and the app says it still can’t detect a lantern.

### 1/5 — Battery Level is incorrect with Baselantern XL

*2020-07-17, version 2.1*

The app can be useful, however is quite buggy. Battery level is incorrect and only shows about 25 mins on full charge! Please fix!

Why hasn’t there been an update for this? When I purchased I was told the app would be updated soon to resolve these issues but nothing has been done??

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2021-04-13, version 2.1*

I downloaded the app and was using it to control my fire pit in under 30 seconds.
It works brilliantly 5 stars

### 5/5 — Great app

*2020-05-29, version 2.1*

I use it with both the FirePit and BaseLantern and love it.

### 5/5 — Works perfectly with FirePit

*2020-04-23, version 2.1*

Not sure why there are so many negative reviews, as this worked perfectly for me with the FirePit and iPhone 11 Pro. One time setup for Bluetooth connectivity and it’s worked flawlessly ever since. Connects right away!

One suggestion for the developers if they read reviews: please make the UI for the fan speed slider a bit more user friendly. It’s sometimes hard to “grab” the slider, so perhaps you can just expand the touch zone? Something to think about!

### 5/5 — Wow

*2020-04-17, version 2.1*

It works well for only wish that it would send a notification to my phone when it finished charging

### 5/5 — Great!

*2020-01-09, version 2.1*

Not sure what the other reviews expected of the app.. Works awesome and connects quickly with both the baselantern XL and firepit. Particularly useful for lazy guys like myself who don’t like to get up to shut off the lights. Great job biolite!

### 5/5 — Very nice

*2019-07-31, version 2.1*

Just put the Firelite together and started a fire. Then remembered there was an app so loaded it to see how that would go. Paired painlessly. Kind of simple but it does exactly what it says it does.

### 5/5 — Simple, clean app - works flawlessly with FirePit

*2018-06-26, version 2.0*

Installed this app to use with my new BioLite FirePit. It works flawlessly, and it is simple and clean. Love it!

### 5/5 — WoW!

*2017-09-18, version 1.2*

Works very well! No flickering anymore.

### 5/5 — Brilliant App & Piece of kit

*2017-09-08, version 1.2*

This app has been really improved since the last update, and from an ethical company that doesn't cut corners in terms of their products or attention to detail. The lamp is conjunction with the app is so versatile and love the ability to change colours and intensity of the illumination from the app itself.

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2017-07-05, version 1.0.3*

This app gives a lot more versatility to the Baselantern XL! I have noticed a small glitch where if I physically turn the light on and use the app to enter "chill" mode it will flicker as it resists. Problem is 100% fixed if light is turned on via app. Otherwise there's been no other issues and works great!
