### 4/5 — Just the job

*2014-09-23*

I approached RBA about such an app some while ago, before it was in the pipeline I suspect, so was hugely hopeful when I found out this was to be released.
First the service, I have been an RBA service user for 20 years and they are second to none, news is more reliable than all the competition, though obviously not perfect, far fewer errors slip through, undoubtedly due to the expertise of the team.
Second the techie bit, does exactly what I want, gives me the news as I require, the filtering is superb and I can get alerts for all the species and areas I am interested in as well as all the national news.
The maps and directions are very useful, the news and species search facilities are great. Photos too are top class.
It is more economical than my pager, which is a real advantage in these cash strapped times.
Downsides: slightly slower than the pager service but not too much so, sometimes messages do not want to load due to server errors, a pain but again does not normally last too long, relies on phone signal which can be patchy in some areas but this is also a positive as the messages will always get delivered eventually unlike missed pager messages.
On balance I am very happy with the app, with continued phone development (4G) it can only get better.
Buy it!

### 5/5 — Great app

*2014-08-18*

Excellent app and very reasonably priced subscription gives you everything except the push alerts, which is fine by me. Comprehensive and flexible search features and up to the minute news... Plus a great gallery. What more could you ask for!

### 5/5 — Great app

*2014-08-16, version 1.4*

Perfect for all birders, just to check your area or to go chasing that rare.

### 5/5 — Great

*2014-07-06, version 1.3*

Difficult to fault as it does what it says on the tin. Mapping options and gallery very useful additions. I have been using since it came out on iPhone and if it hadn't done I'd have changed the phone rather than miss out on the app!

### 5/5 — Mr

*2014-01-15, version 1.2.1*

Great app use it all the time

### 5/5 — A Great Birding App

*2013-12-14, version 1.2.1*

Indispensable! I especially like the fact that you can search against a saved list. It does crash occasionally but otherwise very solid

### 4/5 — Brilliant!

*2013-10-25, version 1.2.1*

Does everything it says it should. Just lost a star for the odd unexplained crash.

### 5/5 — Rare Bird Alert app

*2013-10-01, version 1.2*

An appealing, impressive and easy to use App. It perfectly complements having a pager. Having been an app user since its' creation, I find that I am using it more and more to access rare bird information and photos quickly every day. So long as you have a wi-fi or 3G signal it's great. Checking news and getting extra info has never been so easy or such a delight. Of course it works when abroad, so you can plan what you will do when your flight touches down back in England. Although not designed for iPad, it's also downloadable and easy to access there.

### 4/5 — Mjt

*2013-09-29, version 1.2*

Excellent app for up to date bird sightings; but the location maps info through Google is not always exact simply because they do not use o/s grid reference such as is available through the GB o/s converter app :

### 5/5 — Great Stuff

*2013-08-08, version 1.1.2*

It's a fantastic app.I have cancelled. my pager the news is fast with Vodafone. The detail is precise and photos an excelent advantage.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Problem logging in

*2019-10-03, version 3.4.9*

I downloaded the app, but can’t log in without registering on the wen page. Where is that??
Kind of pointless having an app that won’t allow registration.
Deleted it.

### 1/5 — No access

*2015-10-18, version 1.7*

I paid for a year's subscription. Been down on IOS9 for a month now, right through the best part of the autumn migration. No info regarding fix progress since 19th September.

### 1/5 — Won't open in iOS 9

*2015-10-13, version 1.7*

At least that is what I've found using an iPhone 5s. Hopefully a fix on the way!

### 1/5 — Review

*2014-08-15, version 1.4*

Doesn't work properly.

### 2/5 — Very Buggy

*2022-05-13*

Had the App for a couple of weeks now.
It’s ok when it works but was very difficult to set up initially. Kept telling me to log in when I already was.
After reinstalling it I finally got it to work but it crashes almost every day.
Sometimes I find it easier to just go online and pick up the news directly from the BirdAlert website.

### 2/5 — Average reporting platform

*2021-12-17, version 5.0.18*

Good for the reports but that’s mostly on the birds/birders really… Incredibly buggy, and whole system seems very dated and plain… Gallery is hard to navigate.

### 2/5 — Review

*2021-05-29, version 5.0.18*

Fairly good but I regularly have to reload as it crashes. For the money I am paying this glitch should be sorted I think. Sadly the same thing year after year.

### 3/5 — Mostly good but crashes

*2020-02-11, version 3.4.9*

This is useful for receiving alerts but I find when I go to click on an alert the app crashes, every time. If you load a message from the general news but it’s find, but not from my alerts.
(Phone software is fully up to date)

### 4/5 — Enjoy the app

*2015-09-17, version 1.7*

I'm not a big twitcher but this app is great for just checking out what's been seen where you are. Trip to Church Norton recently, checked app, Wryneck seen, half hour later I'd got a lifer. Very handy.

### 4/5 — Spot on!

*2014-10-29, version 1.6*

The app is amazing for what it offers to the keen birder! However payment benefits are way too overpriced!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — 2025 Update

*2025-07-09*

Easy to use, full of information to help on that next twitch, or notify RBA of a new bird or an update on a rarity.

### 5/5 — Works well

*2025-02-28*

Love it

### 5/5 — Dave

*2024-05-14, version 5.0.18*

Very good communication all sorted

### 5/5 — Best app for bird alerts

*2020-05-08, version 5.0.18*

One of the only apps I can find for bird alerts and so far so good 👍

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2016-03-13, version 2.2*

Easily accessible news, comprehensive searches and alerts

### 5/5 — Excellent App

*2015-03-21*

For many years, I've carried a RBA pager around with me, and still do. This app adds perfectly to the package, with easy access to the latest reports and excellent alert setting for your local area, similar to the pager. Would highly recommend this to any birder in the field.

### 5/5 — Top app

*2014-11-28, version 1.7*

Used to get phone messages, also had a pager before but prefer this app well thought out you can even get directions top app for birders

### 5/5 — Bird pro

*2014-10-29, version 1.6*

Had a pager previously but this app is just what the doctor ordered easy to use and you get the messages that you need

### 5/5 — Pro

*2014-10-17, version 1.6*

Excellent app. Site details and species details are very useful. Will still keep pager as orange and vodaphone combination seems to give 100% coverage.

### 5/5 — Well designed, easy to use App

*2014-09-19, version 1.5*

Would definitely recommend.
