Species accounts with blank pages instead of texts, mislabeled illustrations, notes on illustrations that directly contradict text, and wrong species names on illustrations. White-throated Piculet? That’s not even a typo. In general, habitat info is uselessly brief, no mention of bird habits makes it impossible to locate a bird you don’t already know. You can’t enlarge the illustrations but you can enlarge the maps, which is useless. Away from the Atlantic rainforest and Guianan shield you’re better off with an app from Ecuador or Peru, or better yet the Lynx books. ### 3/5 — Needs a way to download sightings *2020-02-08, version 2.0.7* This was a great app during a recent trip to brazil. Much easier to deal with than the book, which I also have. but I was sorry to see after getting home that you cannot download your sightings... ie your ‘favorites’. This would be so much better if you could record details of species etc in the field and download it ### 4/5 — O app é bom, mas... *2019-10-17* O app é bom, mas deixa a desejar em algumas coisas. Uma delas é não ampliar as fotos dos pássaros no índice; a outra é, mesmo com o ícone de voltar ao índice, não fazê-lo. É necessário fechar o aplicativo e se achar. Como não tem como ampliar a foto dos pássaros, se torna ainda mais difícil identificar identificar algum animal em específico, ainda mais sem uma foto real, somente com o desenho. Com a foto geralmente temos o voto de Minerva. ### 3/5 — Missing multiple lists of favorites *2019-01-09, version 2.0.5* It is a shame that an app with such rich and comprehensive content as this one does not feature a “filter by state/location” or at least the possibility to manually create multiple lists of favorite birds. This renders the app almost useless because one has to scroll through 1800+ thumbnails of birds to try to identify one spotted bird. In Brazil, I am frequently out of range so the app is not very useful. Will still have to carry the book so would have passed on the app had I known its limitations. ### 4/5 — Muito bom *2014-12-01* Sou ornitologo, guia de observação de aves e o app me ajuda muito tanto na pesquisa quAnto nas guiadas. ### 2/5 — Chip Scialfa, PH.D. *2014-10-08, version 1.0.0* Having a digital field guide has improved my birding experiences in North America and so I jumped at the chance to get this app. While it certainly has a lot of nice features, I can't recommend it strongly. Why? I'll be brief. Illustrations are of poor quality, for example, do not show wing patterns on some species where it is important. Functional links are too small to see in the field. Compare with Sibley. Fields are too touch-sensitive, opening whole categories of birds unintentionally. Search function locks up the system, running on iPad, but, so far, not on the iPod. No compare species function. Need a "field book" type set of plates that allow fast comparison of large numbers of species for the person new to an area. In short, use a paper field guide, unless you already know the birds. Save this for songs. ### 2/5 — Nice idea but lacks functionality *2014-09-23, version 1.0.0* Although comprehensive in its scope, this guide has several aspects that must be improved in future updates. The "drawings" are awful in most instances and the text descriptions are lacking any of the detail expected in a serious bird guide. The maps are sometimes hard to decipher also. From a functional point of view the search function does not have a back button meaning that one has to exit the app to reset the full list of species. A further annoyance is that the list itself is very hard to manage with high level groupings constantly opening when trying to scroll up or down. This app is a great start but I would consider it very much a beta version or less of something that could truly be a valuable tool in the field. ### 2/5 — Incompatible with iOS 7! *2014-08-22, version 1.0.0* I bought this as I am on a birding trip to the Pantanal in a few days time and the van Perlo reference book is heavy! Unfortunately it freezes under iOS 7 if you attempt a search and can only be resuscitated by a reboot. I contacted the publisher, Natureguides, and they informed me that a remedy is a "low priority". I have regretfully applied for a refund. ### 2/5 — Incompatible with iOS7 *2014-07-03, version 1.0.0* Includes some photos and audio so could be a useful improvement on the van Perlo book. Three days into the trip the app disappeared. When I downloaded it again all my sightings were gone. When I am in Brazil I use this app every day. Love the enhancement of songs and photographs. Also the coverage of the entire country is great. Since I live in North America, many species that I see in different parts of Brazil are new to me, and this app in combination with printed field guides enables me to have a great chance of getting an identification of a new bird. I’ve used it on at least 5 visits to such varied locations as Belo Horizonte and the coastal range in Minas Gerais; Brasilia and the Capitol region; Cuiabá and Chapada dos Guimarães National Park; Rio and environs; Goiás state; and the Xingu region of Mato Grosso. Ajuda bastante também pelas gravações. Mas, já adquiri desde meu IPhone 3 e sinto que poucas atualizações são feitas para melhorar a experiência do usuário. Para as buscas da espécie é necessário até acentuar o nome em português. Parece que não há Inteligência Artificial que nos facilita as buscas. E também acho que poderia ter aumentado a base de dados das gravações e o mapa de ocorrência das espécies.
