Les titres des oiseaux sont bien en français mais les explications sont en anglais. ### 2/5 — Trading Standards? *2015-04-14, version 2.0.0* I love this app, it's always been very good. But where are "the full, detailed text accounts" from BCP, which were there in the previous version and are advertised as being a major feature in this version? The text of each entry cuts off at Distribution, so there is no info on Population, Movements, Food, Social Pattern and Behaviour, Voice, Breeding, Length and Weight or Geographical Variation. Please release an update that lives up to the description of the product, as this falls a long way short. ### 3/5 — AJB63 *2014-07-07, version 2.0.0* This was going to get an absolute slating, but I've just discovered how to change the language from its ridiculous American default setting (Birds of Northern Europe, for heaven's sake) to English. Go into settings; language; primary language "English" and all is well with the world again. It could do with the return of the alphabetically arranged scroll bar and it does have a tendency to freeze, but at least I don't have to remember how to spell grey, I mean gray and not to introduce searches with 'Eurasian' or 'European'. And I no longer feel the need to demand my money back for an app that no longer represents the birds I expect it to. ### 2/5 — Bad update *2014-07-03, version 2.0.0* Am unhappy that information has been omitted such as population figures for different countries and that the navigation has been made more difficult. Looks nicer though and a few bugs have been resolved. ### 2/5 — Long due update *2014-06-03* The app has gotten an updated that was long due. Many of the pictures and drawings are of better resolution now, but some (e.g. Gannet) are still horrible. It's still impossible to search for a family of birds in a different than English language, i.e. if you want to see all Warblers (German: Grasmücken), you can't type in "Grasmücke" to get them all. That needs to be fixed. What's even more bothering me is the fact that parts of the descriptive texts have been erased in the new version. Information about social pattern and behavior, voice, breeding, movements... is only available for a few species, whereas the old version had that information for each species! Needs to be fixed even more! Until then, only two stars. ### 4/5 — Shame *2014-06-02, version 2.0.0* This is a big improvement on the old version which I used a lot anyway. It's a shame the names are American with no acknowledgement of the different names we use in England. We call loons divers, bank swallow is a sand martin and barn swallow is just a swallow. I've always found it annoying that searches can miss out birds in a group, if you put in warbler you won't get Chiffchaff or white throat which are also warblers, same thing with finches. I suppose the comparison feature deals with that. Despite the niggles it is still a great app. ### 4/5 — Vivement l'Europe du sud *2013-06-16* Bonne appli, très complète. And some of the photos and videos are less than stella. Still the best but is creaking. It was a 5 star but has aged ### 2/5 — Good idea but not useable *2013-03-17* The idea is good, but: The scans of the fotos and drawings are so bad. There is no fun on the ipad! It is not possible to find just alle birds from a family. It is not possible to search for a second part of bird name. Nice idea to have the name of the bird in such a lot languages, but you are not able to translate. Nette Idee aber: Die Scans der Bilder und Fotos sind super schlecht und machen auf einem ipad überhaupt keinen Spass. Es ist nicht möglich nach einen Familiennamen zu suchen. Es ist nicht möglich nach einem Teil eines Namens zu suchen. Es ist eine nette Idee die Namen in so vielen Sprachen zu haben, es ist aber nicht Möglich einen Namen zu übersetzen. Ich könnte also einem Schweden nicht erzählen, das ich eine Waldschnepfe gesehen habe wenn ich nicht weiß wie er auf schwedisch heißt oder ich muss mühsam alle Bilder durch schauen. Ich bin bei 18,99€ wirklich enttäuscht und kann es nicht empfehlen! Особенно полезна огромная коллекция записей голосов птиц. Для фотоохотника, коим являюсь уже 7 лет, вещь просто незаменимая. Как определитель использую редко, ибо практически всех птиц, имеющихся в приложении, знаю в лицо. Рекомендую! ### 3/5 — Casual birder *2013-01-27, version 1.0.2* There is a lot there and you can switch between languages. It is a little bit difficult to navigate and it is expensive. I think they win partially by being the only choice, at least when I bought it. Not dissatisfied and happy to have that much info on my ipad/iphone when I'm running around. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Rubbish *2017-02-06, version 2.0.0* Asked for a refund, but apple said no! The illustrations are poor and the information is limited, was expecting BWP. The Collins bird id app is 100% superior. Just hope they work on it and that it improves in the future, but wont hold my breath. ### 1/5 — Calidad de dibujos falta muchísima detalle *2014-07-05* Buena Applicacion útil para llevar se de camino, salvo que se ve muy limitado el detalle de los dibujos, más faltan muchas especies accidentales, o de la península ibérica. Como guía básica muy útil, aún por el precio muy alto. I certainly do with this effort . Take something that works perfectly and ruin it in one go . Everything is so long winded to get to , and the songs don't loop anymore , also we'res the a-z down the side ? Pointless and perplexing in one easy lesson . ### 1/5 — Robbery! *2014-06-08, version 2.0.0* Much of the text from earlier versions has been removed (eg Black Stork is missing all the following sections now: behavior, population, movements, voice and breeding; all species seem to at least bd missing population now!). Nature Guides should offer users to opt for a full refund instead. This is no longer what I purchased! ### 1/5 — Just awful *2014-06-05, version 2.0.0* This updated version is even worse than the previous one and that one was dreadful. All of the species sections are open by default making it difficult to scroll down though them. Why is there no preferences to switch this annoying feature off? The new layout feels crammed and very poorly laid out. Why are species such as Glossy Ibis, Rose Coloured Starling, Red Rumped Swallow and Wallcreeper again omitted? This app is invaluable in the field but they have not ironed out the deficiencies of the previous version but compounded them. Any decent app developer could ‘knock this one out of the ballpark’. There is so much potential here but whoever has had the greasy paws on this update has failed utterly. Very disappointing. ### 1/5 — Crashing on iphone 4s, IOS 7.1.1 *2014-06-04, version 2.0.0* The new 2.0.0 updated is crashing. After 5 minutes I can only access text, then after another 5 minutes it freezes. Reloaded, and had the same problem. Anyone else having the same problem, or any suggestions? ### 1/5 — Make sure you keep version 1 before you try this! *2014-06-02, version 2.0.0* I updated this app - which has been a long term favourite of mine - to Version 2. It is simply horrid on an iPhone. Navigation is unnatural and long-winded, it’s ugly, and it makes such appalling use of the iPhone screen real estate, that finding anything takes an absolute age. It was like having an old friend beaten up and mutilated by thugs. Luckily, I still had Version 1 in the iTunes library on my Mac, so I deleted the new version from the iPhone, and restored the old version. I heartedly recommend to anyone that they keep this escape route open, in case you have the same reaction to Version 2 as I did. ### 1/5 — Can't clear search *2014-03-27, version 1.0.2* When I enter a search to find a particular bird, there is no way of clearing the search field and returning to the full list, or of entering another search value. Please sort this out. ### 1/5 — Very good - but could be even better! *2011-04-23* + Broad and excellent treatment of each species. + Good illustrations and photos + Mostly several good quality audio examples per species - Searches names only from the word beginning (in German): 'buch' gives one result (Buchfink), but 'fink' gives no result at all - Regrettably, the maps have very low resolutions (although it is obvious that they could show a lot more details). - Limited steering of the audio files, i.e. only start/stop; rewind or forward are not possible Conclusion: Excellent content, but luke-arm functionallity. On peut afficher les noms en deux langues max, par ex français et scientifique Mais par rapport au guide papier c'est un énorme progrès (poids, exhaustivité, son) Une jolie fonction de comparaison avec des espèces proches aussi ! I understand this is now optimised for 64 bit, so ready for when iOS drops 32 bit architecture. Possibly a little nippier. Still the best bird field guide around. ### 5/5 — Beautiful app! *2014-08-08, version 2.0.0* Gorgeous illustrations, well-organized. I like how it lists all species in taxonomic order, by family. The other review says there aren't descriptions and bird calls, but this is incorrect. The app does include bird calls and descriptions. Just scroll along thumbnails at bottom. ### 5/5 — Excellent *2014-06-09, version 2.0.0* Just what I wanted ### 5/5 — Excellent upgrade *2014-06-02, version 2.0.0* This is an exceptional upgrade making it MUCH easier to navigate I especially like the search function and especially that it remains on the last section ie calls on each search. Try Warbler as an example. This is now the 'bird guides ' for iPhone and iPad. 10 out of 10 ### 5/5 — I don't know what people expect *2014-06-02, version 2.0.0* It's hard to see why everyone doesn't give this five stars. I have at least £1000 pounds worth of bird books at home because there is no perfect guide or one reference that covers all aspects. The BWP is as close as it gets but I can't take that into the field with me. This is as close as you can get and on top of that I can hear calls too; no book can do that. I have to ask those that think this is expensive if they have ever bought a book before. If you are looking at this app you surely already have your bins, scope, goretex everything, etc. What's 15 quid on top of that to get the equivalent of £200 worth of reference books that can't go out of date, plus a box set of bird call CDs, all in a pocket-sized format (smaller than any of my field guides) that you don't have to re-wrap in parcel tape every other trip to stop it disintegrating. This is a bargain! Great update thanks. ### 5/5 — Superb for the birder *2013-09-15* My wife bought this - and after watching her use it on our recent trip, I just did the same. It is the only serious app. for the European birder - at least as good as iBird Pro is for North America. And when she couldn't figure out how to do something, and sent an email to the developers, she got a prompt and very helpful personal response. It has all the tools one needs - range maps, recorded calls, excellent descriptions, good illustrations (mixture of drawings and photos) - really makes bird identification a pleasure. Note that although the title implies a limitation to Northern Europe, we found it covered all of the birds we saw further south - of course this was not a systematic check. Cons - nothing worth mentioning. Recommended. ### 5/5 — Simply the best *2013-06-28, version 1.0.2* I have tried all the birding apps for Europe and most are quite lacking in one or more basic facilities. This "book" has calls, song, a number of drawings and photos, good search facilities, maps and lots of written details. I have owned this app for a few years now. It is a fantastic piece of work. Never lets me down. Congratulations are due to the developers. At £15, this is my most expensive app by far but has been worth every penny!
