## What is Birds of South America?

No continent supports a bigger and more varied bird population, more than 3,000 species belonging to more than 100 families are presented in this app.

This is the only app that describes all the species of birds regularly found in South America!

All bird names are included in English, Latin, and the major languages spoken in South America (Spanish, Portuguese, French) as well as in many other languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Russian, etc.

In addition to the bird descriptions and images the app presents an ornithological dictionary with thousands of special terms and their explanations (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French) as well as high-quality drawings and explanations of bird anatomy and topology in English, French, and Spanish.

The current app contains descriptions of more than 3,100 bird species. All images are contained within the app for complete offline use of the app in the field where there might be no internet connection..

This version of the app contains more than 5,000 bird images, only very few species (8) are currently without image!

The app runs completely offline, there is no need for an internet connection during usage of the app (except for the backup/restore operations for Field Notes to/from the server).

### 3/5 — Thanks

*2026-04-16*

This is a nice app, and apparently has been vastly improved over the years. Only three stars because it does not have a search feature which is sorely needed. Filter or search by primary and secondary colors, location, shape, size, habitat, and various patterns on various body parts.

### 2/5 — I don’t recommend

*2019-06-10*

It has a couple of pictures of birds and their names in various languages. No vocalizations. For some birds, a brief description and habitat. Some pics are wrong.

### 4/5 — Greatly improved version

*2018-04-23*

Three years ago I reviewed an early version of this app and found it practically useless (because it had no search functions and was simply a catalog of birds).

But this version is greatly improved and rectifies some of the problems I mentioned earlier. You can now narrow your search by country or by species and you can search the names and descriptions for various terms. Furthermore the app claims to list all 3000+ species in South America and, a real bonus, allows you to download the whole database for off-line use.

I would suggest two more improvements for the next version: 1) including a mention in each description of “similar species” to make comparisons easier; and 2) adding a function that allows narrowing search results by color, size, shape, etc.

But overall this app is a vast improvement over the earlier one and is now a useful tool for identifying birds in the field.

Felicitaciones!

**Developer response:** Useless comment. And so old and never updated. But the app has been updated and is complete. It is a pity that users don't update their comments. Even for such a terrific app.

### 4/5 — Crashes and freezes more often than useful

*2017-07-02*

Or, the downloaded data just disappears. Was working fine on iOS9, but not since iOS 10 update. I have contacted support twice, and no update to fix the problem.
Update: bugs fixed , works well, all data downloaded is stable. Thank you!
Crashes a problem again July 1.2017. Please fix

**Developer response:** The current version is 2.1.0 so the problems were taken care of and the app runs stable. If only the users would update their comments (which is possible now!) in the same way as the app providers are updating their apps, it would be very helpful for new users to make a purchasing decision...

### 4/5 — Excellent for the price

*2015-10-27*

I was struggling to find a suitable book on birds for a holiday in Brazil. The only book I found for Brazil was on Passerines; it looked beautiful and cost £40. One book that was recommended was Birds of Venezuela but I could only find old, second hand copies. Then I found this app and thought "it is only £5.99, why not?" and I am very glad I bought it.
The descriptions are short, the index takes a bit of working out and you can only search for a bird in it's family so it can be difficult to find a bird you don't recognise but I I found it very useful and comprehensive. I used the "Add to favourites" function to create a list of birds I had seen so I could learn more about them when I got home.

### 1/5 — Do not buy this!

*2015-05-02*

Do not waste your money on this. Absolutely awful app.
Buggy, clunky, incomplete.
I feel ripped off.
Avoid!

**Developer response:** Without explicit description of the items that are ostensibly buggy and incomplete the "review" is absolutely useless. Obviously this user has never cared to contact the app provider to discuss his problems.

### 2/5 — Birds of South America

*2015-02-20*

Disappointed, I really wanted to check hummingbirds and of 200 + reported there were only 2 pictures. Also this took forever to download.

### 4/5 — Improving all the time

*2015-02-18*

I thought I would risk buying this as I don't want to carry a physical book. It downloaded over 2000 pictures. It is not yet complete, for instance all the cuckoos were depicted but only a fraction of the hummingbirds. I'm not sure I like the pictures of the birds that are being held by the feet, but I suppose as long as it is being done carefully by an expert! I think the app will be a good resource on my holiday to Chile.

### 1/5 — Oh dear

*2014-08-05*

I was looking for an app to help me with the ID of birds in Peru. This app looked ideal, but it's not! It is just not complete. The layout has the potential to be good but the content is lacking. Take for example the family of "gulls and terns". There are 38 species listed but only one image. Useless. Humming birds has 244 species but only 28 with images. It is near impossible to ID a bird just from a description. I am sure that the designers will update the images when and if they get them, but this should not have been released as it is.
I recently purchased "Costa Rica birds" by BirdingFieldGuides. Wonderful. Many birds have several images, there is a facility to add your own notes and to date time and place for your sightings.
IMD would do well to look at this app for the right direction. Maybe they have taken on a project that is too big for their present resources?
So only one star at present. I hope I can alter this in the future as the number of images increases

**Developer response:** Oh dear, have you ever updated the app and checked it out now? Obviously not... or why haven't you updated your comment?

### 2/5 — South American bird app

*2014-01-13*

This app has much potential but it keeps crashing! Please fix this!
