## What is Bit Quiz 16?

Bit Quiz 16 turns the glowing heart of a retro computer into a puzzle game. Toggle bits on a CRT terminal to match target numbers, and discover how patterns of ones and zeros become characters, colors, and everything else inside a machine.
Every level starts with a clear mission and simple instructions: encode decimal numbers in binary, one bit at a time. Seven brain-building levels take you from 4-bit nibbles all the way to 16-bit words, with undo, level navigation, and detailed timing and error-rate stats to sharpen your skills. Redo any level to beat your best.
The look is pure retro terminal: CRT scanlines and phosphor glow, square-wave chiptune sound, and ASCII art on every screen. Game Center leaderboards and achievements track your climb.
Curious how computers really work? Seven short, easy-to-read help files offer a mini intro to binary encoding — how bits build nibbles, bytes, and data structures, and how simple patterns represent text, color, and data. No ads, no tracking, no in-app purchases.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 2.0.0 — 2026-07-15

Bit Quiz 16 2.0 is a complete rebuild — same mission, whole new machine.
• All-new retro terminal look: CRT scanlines, phosphor glow, and ASCII art on every screen • Square-wave chiptune sound and haptic feedback on every bit you flip • 7 brain-building levels, from 4-bit nibbles to 16-bit words, each opening with a clear mission • Game Center achievements and leaderboards across all 7 levels • Timing and error-rate stats to track and sharpen your skills • 7 all-new, easy-to-read help files — a mini intro to binary encoding • In-game controls for level navigation, help, and undo
Note: 2.0 is a fresh start — progress from earlier versions isn't carried over. Requires iOS 26.

### 1.1.1 — 2023-05-30

Bit Quiz 16 version 1.1.1 is a big update with two new features: An undo button and “tri-nibbles” for the tribble level.

New Feature: Undo button!
The Undo button gives you 1-3 undos per round to revert a mistake. When you tap undo the last card you tapped is flipped back to its original state and the tap counter is reduced by 1. The undo button allows you to earn a perfection even after you have tapped a wrong card. The under of undo’s per round scale with the difficulty of each level. You have a limited number of undos, so use them wisely!

New Feature: Tri-nibbles on the tribble level!
The bits of 12-bit tribble level are now visualized as three 4-bit nibbles, each with its own integer value. If you know your 4-bit nibble bit patterns well you can easily earn perfections by solving for each tri-nibble. For example the decimal value 2026 expressed by all 12 bits can be thought of as three nibbles with the values 7, 14, 10.

Note: To access the Level Chooser, tap the name of the current level at the top left of the screen (it's now a button).

### 1.0.0 — 2023-05-01

Runs on M1 & M2 Macs, bug fixes, and improvements. Gibble level renamed to Tribble—a much better name for 12 bits!

### 1.0 — 2023-04-25

No release notes.
