## What is Black Memorial Day?

Most people don't know that Memorial Day was founded by Black Americans. I
n 1865, approximately 10,000 formerly enslaved people in Charleston organized the first large-scale Memorial Day ceremony in the United States — years before any official holiday was declared. 

Black Memorial Day brings that story, and hundreds like it, to your phone. Explore profiles of Black and Latino soldiers who earned the Medal of Honor, browse a historical timeline from the Civil War to the Iraq War, and discover bite-sized facts about the units, heroes, and sacrifices that shaped American history. Every fact is sourced from credible institutions including the National Archives, the Smithsonian, and the U.S. Army Center of Military History.
