### 4/5 — 如何发音？

*2019-11-04*

如题。有没有设置可解决这个问题？

### 4/5 — The ultimate legal dictionary

*2019-11-03*

The app provides the convenient user experience, but the support of iOS 13 split view features is highly demanded.

### 3/5 — Not Optimized for iPhone X

*2019-03-26*

The content is great and I feel the app is well designed. But much of the screen on the top and bottom is just black and therefore is not used for content. Were this fixed, the reading experience would be far superior.

### 2/5 — Bring back page numbers

*2017-10-02*

I agree with all the others that page numbers need to be included for each definition like in the 9th edition. It is impossible to cite without the page number. I will revise my rating once this has been done.

### 2/5 — App needs updating!

*2017-09-29*

Great app because it keeps me from lugging around a huge dictionary however the app does not support the split screen functionality of iOS 11 which is a huge let down and inter-fears with some of my study habits 😒 Please fix this issue as soon as possible. I would love to give this app a 5 star rating.

### 3/5 — Good Try, But...

*2016-10-13*

So what you have here is simple enough- a digital version of the already indispensable Black's Law Dictionary. Functions with ease- searches are a snap, and often feature links to related or alternative terms. The pronunciation guide is exceptionally useful.

All said and done, you've got a near five star app that's missing a few features- unfortunately most of them are rather severe oversights for a professional, especially considering this app comes with a $55 price tag.

• The app possesses absolutely no ability to adjust brightness in app. In darker settings, this app is blindingly white. Most reading oriented apps (Kindle, Nook, iBooks) have long since included such a feature.

• Physical page numbers for definitions, while not necessary, would be extremely useful for citation.

• One piece of extremely crucial information that is omitted from the Black's Law Dictionary product line as a whole, but which could have easily been implemented here is which volume of Black's a given definition originates from.

• The app doesn't synch bookmarks and history across devices. Not the most pressing issue, but it would have been helpful.

• On a side note, the app icon is atrocious.

### 4/5 — Great Resource but Needs Improvement

*2016-09-07*

As a 1L, this app is a necessary tool. I like the convenience of not having to carry around yet another heavy book. I tried to get by with my Black's pocket dictionary but it just wasn't cutting it. When on my computer, it is easy enough to use Black's Law Dictionary via Westlaw. The app comes in handy when I am reading casebooks and not sitting in front of my Mac. I have to agree with another reviewer who mentioned that it would be great to have the page numbers included so that we can easily cite to it. That would definitely add to the value of this app as it is already the most money I have ever spent on a single app.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Define “Woman”

*2022-07-26*

I actually had a good laugh over this. You have a legal definition for “Man” but you don’t have one for “Woman.” So basically for all the information you have your basically saying the professional by the book lawyer does not know what a woman is. Yet you have womens bureau and womens suffrage etc. So many things for this one type of person you can’t define.

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW STUPID THAT LOOKS?

Sorry but for all your helpful information, you’re getting one star for that loophole.

If you have any pride at all, get that fixed.

### 1/5 — iPhone X

*2020-03-22*

Адаптируйте под iPhone X

### 1/5 — Had to pay again!

*2019-06-21*

I bought the 9th edition of the Black’s and had to repurchase the app entirely when the developer pulled the 9th edition from the App Store. I contacted Apple and they were of no help stating that Apple had no control over the developer pulling the content from the store. I did not follow up with Thompson as I had spent enough time on the issue with Apple. It’s a frustrating issue because had I bought the 9th edition book in print, I still would have access to the content.

### 1/5 — Huge missed opportunity

*2018-05-16*

This app is a massive missed opportunity. A mobile version of Black's could be indispensable for lawyers and students and easily justify the asking price. This app has not been updated to meet basic expectations (like iPhone X support), and more importantly it lacks vital functionality like generating BB citations or even just giving citable page numbers.

As a student, $60 is a significant amount to spend on an app. I wouldn't regret it if the app met such modest expectations, but it does not.

### 1/5 — Money grab

*2018-05-03*

I had the 9th edition app, which has been just as expensive, but they just disabled it. Instead of offering an upgrade at a reasonable price, they just put this one out. At full price even for those of us who had the previous version.

### 1/5 — UPDATE THE APP

*2018-02-18*

You charge over $50 for this app. It is nothing more than a digital version of the dictionary. You get this price because law students pay exorbitant prices for every other book that they buy anyways. Update it for the iPhone X, so that I can ACTUALLY SEE what I paid for.

### 1/5 — Needs to have page numbers

*2018-01-12*

I’m physically disabled, and unable to use the print version. Citations require you to include page numbers.

I’ll revise my review if page numbers are re-added.

### 1/5 — 差评

*2015-11-20*

这么贵的东西，查词的时候多次出现闪退，有没有人来管一下？我要退货！

### 1/5 — Where's the page ?

*2015-06-25*

I really need to cite the page numbers. I actually use the app in practice. The 9th edition app had page numbers, where are they here?

### 2/5 — Try the free “Legal” dictionary app first

*2020-04-06*

This dictionary is overpriced. I suggest trying the free “Legal” dictionary first and if it does not meet your needs then download Black’s. I’ve been comparing definitions between the two and I am finding that the free dictionary provides similar and often more helpful definitions. Unlike the free app, Black’s is not always great at providing examples.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Works great

*2022-11-03*

Despite the older negative reviews, I took a chance on this app, hoping it would save me from having to carry the actual dictionary to and from class. APP IS GREAT! I highly recommend it to any and all law students and attorneys. I only regret not giving it a chance sooner.

### 5/5 — Excellent but where is the latest version

*2021-09-03*

I’ve taught law at the college level for several years This is an excellent tool to look reliable definitions of legal term at a more that 50% discount over the hard cover version.

I’ve warned students not to look up legal definitions on the internet because who knows what you get.

Blacks is the industry standard. There is really no substitute. I’d be happy to pay $60 for an updated version rather twice as much for an updated version of the hard cover

### 5/5 — 很好的一部英美法词典

*2021-01-18*

很不错 发音和解释都很全面准确

### 5/5 — Excellent!!!

### 5/5 — Very reliable

*2019-09-20*

I love the app but please optimise it for iPad Pro on your next update. Thank you! :)

### 5/5 — 非常好

*2019-04-24*

查询方便，便于记忆，携带方便！

### 5/5 — Wonderful!

*2015-09-02*

Easy to use, a great upgrade over the 9th edition app.

### 4/5 — From Law School to Lawyer

*2022-01-22*

I found the Black’s Law Dictionary application as a 1L student. The app was an incredibly useful reference for new words, Latin phrases, abbreviations, and important documents.

As a practicing attorney, I use it as a reference when writing briefs, when providing additional specificity to certain terms for clients, or to simply understand when other lawyers are trying to be sneaky when using outdated language.(i.e., what is a cognovit judgment?).

As some other reviewers have pointed out, there is room for minor improvements to the app interface and functionality, but overall, it works and it is a reliable.

Despite these other minor issues, I would give this app a 5 star review, but there has always been one issue that bothers me when using this app: if I have audio playing in a different application and switch to Black’s, the app causes the volume to lower slightly. I’m not sure if this was intended, as though perhaps we need slightly more focus when looking up a legal term and therefore the volume should be lowered? Nevertheless, this little feature, whether intended or not, has always bothered me.

Other than that, it’s a wonderful app and I highly recommend it.
