The iPad version is vastly easier to use than the iPhone version but there are still some interface elements I find hard to control at times. For instance, why do we need a scroll wheel to access synth parameters, when there's plenty of blank space there to just swipe? Also, the parameter ranges are so wide, that it can be hard at times to really narrow in on the exact value you want. Good for versatility, bad for quickly honing in on specific drum sounds. Really nice drum app, just needs a more streamlined interface to get 5 stars for me. ### 4/5 — Great synth and sequencer with great Flexibility *2010-09-15, version 0* Bleep!box offers a great step sequencer with lots of tracks, patterns, and flexibility for pretty complex arrangement. The synthesis engine is great for tweaking to make "just the right sound". I had a lot of fun tweaking the sounds and arranging. The pattern creation process especially shines, as I can set timing, pitch, an other parameters with great ease! I would suggest the author make it easier to switch between screens, and I found the controls fussy at times, but these are suggestions for improvement, not wholesale change. For melodies, I might also prefer a keyboard, but I have gotten used to the lack thereof. This app is easily worth the price for the flexibility alone. Great work and I am sure I will keep using it! ### 4/5 — Really solid beat sequencer *2010-09-08, version 0* I tried the Player version first and found it to be really deep and useful. Bleepbox does a good job of dealing with the iPhone screen size and it's fun to make beats with it. In terms of workflow, there's almost nothing getting in the way of making good stuff. It sounds good, looks good, and is nice and speedy to work with. The main snags I ran into while getting into it is that you have to be connected to the internet to get the documentation; it's not built-in. I have an iPod Touch and was first looking at it on a plane, so there was more guesswork learning some aspects of it than would have happened if the docs were baked in. I also wouldn't write melodies with bleepbox because it doesn't have a keyboard, which is more comfortable for me. I'll still try it and see if the sequencing way will work for me. If you're used to working with a step sequencer, or looking to work and play that way, or if you (like me) mainly want to make beats, look no further. ### 4/5 — Grooveboxer's paradise *2010-08-28, version 0* At first I was overwhelmed by this app, but reading the manual made me realize the potential of it. Coming from programming my old trusty Electribes, I can already tell, this app is going to be among my favorites. Also, the fact that there are no samples, is going to make it that much more interesting. This app is a forerunner for one of if not THE best synth an beat creation apps out there. The interface seemed a bit too simple in contrast to others like it but after a few minutes, realized that's for the best. It's a no nonsense interface that has been perfected for the small screen interface of the iPhone/iPod touch. I know $10 seems high for an app to most but trust me you'll get your moneys worth with this app. ### 5/5 — Intuitive, fun, powerful *2010-08-23, version 0* It's very easy to get started with this interface, which is well designed for the larger touch surface on the iPad. I initially would have thought that flipping between sections would have bothered me, but it's fast, and each page has the right number of controls on it to make it useful. The sounds from the synthesis engine are good, and it supports enough tracks to make some nice little compositions. Glad it supports the pasteboard. Looking forward to more effects, hopefully. And would love to see smaller note increments (1/8, 1/16) and more time signatures in a future update. I love the copy feature Great for throwing together ideas when Im away from the studio. ### 4/5 — Inspiration Overdrive *2010-05-11, version 0* I'm a sucker for drum machines and sequencers, particularly those that rely entirely on synthesis to generate their sounds. I like 'em even more if they provide access to the deep workings of the onboard synthesis engine. Bleep!BOX fulfills these requisites and then some. More importantly, it offers an intuitive and inspirational interface that allows for lots of real-time control. The layout is sensibly arranged. It'd be pretty hard to get lost. I was rocking out to my own patterns within minutes of downloading the program. Best of all, the sound is very good, indeed. The filter has a nice squelchy character and the oscillators provide a decent range of timbres. I wouldn't hesitate to use bleep!BOX on a commercial release. The sequencer itself is a breeze to use, and there are lots of considerate design touches that make cobbling together your own patterns a snap. I was especially keen on the "Motion" controller which is easily assigned to a selected parameter on the fly. Special thanks to the developer for allowing .wav export, something lacking on some other apps. Yep, I dig bleep!BOX. It's hard to put a price on inspiration, but apparently you can get quite a lot for the paltry sum of $9.99! ### 4/5 — Very nice music app. with a few flaws. *2010-05-03, version 0* First the app is very well made and stable. Second the synth sounds and filters are well done. Third it's easy to understand the basic operation. Fourth the price is fair. Now the flaws. The iPad version while good feels like a retrofit and I wonder if the developer had written it for iPad if it would have been better; I have to assume it would be. I think he did a good job porting it forward but feel it really deserves more iPad TLC to leverage the devices strengths. I had a bit of difficulty understanding the non-music making parts of this app (like the utility sections and sequencing and such but have not yet read the manual). In all I like this app. Wish there were more effects (mod comp and distortion would be great) instead of just delay. I do like the UI however and think the design is solid. Would love to see a better iPad feature set that leveraged the iPad resolution and I know the dev could do better there but that's my main beef. Good app. Worth the outlay. I have tried everything possible to fix this, but no matter what I have done, it still crashes. The latest update is said to address such issues- honestly I had not used the app for some time so I fired it up in Audiobus to see if there was indeed a problem and the all too familiar lack of sound had crept back in. I did the update and still nothing. Without Audiobus functionality this app goes from 4 to 2 stars; the sounds, while customizable still fall a little flat without the benefit of some additional FX and aside from the neat performance mode the user interface is rather clunky and not ideal for jamming. ### 2/5 — Hmmmmmm *2011-06-24, version 1.3.6* Ok, but in the end suffers from a poor UI. ### 2/5 — Disappointing *2010-04-17, version 0* Truly appreciate the effort of the author, but a few things hold this app back for me. First, the UI does not make good use of the iPad, it's basically using an iPhone screen area with some background art. Second, the UI is not intuitive. I've been using sequencers for decades, am an avid fan of Ableton Live of late, but appreciate simple sequencers. So far, it's utterly failed my 10min test. I accomplished nothing, part of this because the UI seems to be broken into tiny bits, so other than fiddling with some sliders, it was a failure. Contrary to another review, this is not even close to as immediately useful and good sounding as the Korg iElectribe. I really like to root for the underdog, but Korg has set an amazingly high bar, and this app doesn't come close (yet). ### 3/5 — Not the greatest interface *2012-04-07, version 1.3.8* This app is not the easiest to work around. The sounds are rewarding. Worth the $5, no more. ### 3/5 — Slightly disappointed *2010-10-02, version 0* All in all, it seems a fun app but it needs improvements. First of all, I think the interface could be thought-through and arranged much better. Next, the sound is a bit cheesy and low quality most of the time, you have to spend a lot of time tweaking the parameters to get it sound good. So, for pure fun - a nice app, albeit a bit expensive for such purpose. If you're a sound design professional, look elsewhere. I wish I played with the free player version - wouldn't have purchased the full version. I only hope that the author gets the app to a higher level with the next updates. ### 3/5 — Decent *2010-05-31, version 0* It's definitely one of the better music making apps out there and I really like the fact that its not sample-based. However it's a three star app because the sound quality is not quite there yet (is it just me or does it sound harsh no matter how you tweak it?) and user interface really hinders the process and making a song takes much longer than it should. ### 4/5 — Nice but no manual *2022-02-16, version 1.4.6* In a way, this app is clunky, the graphics are simple, but functional. The best thing, and the developer points this out, is that you can create your own sounds and that is huge. The best thing that the developer could do is to write up a simple owner's manual. I love this app and was very frustrated on spending so much time programming the motion only to hit another parameter wrong to have it reset to that particular parameter. Now it will prompt you to allow or disallow and my request has been answered!
