### 2/5 — App needs updating and map hard to follow

*2024-03-15, version 9.0.96*

The app is in need of updating. The tour does not provide adequate guidance. The GPS is hard to follow. I ended up locking my screen and turning my phone to be able to follow the roads. Pricey for what you get.

### 2/5 — Awful app!

*2024-03-05, version 9.0.96*

Totally NOT intuitive. There’s no link between where you are and where you need to go. The available map has sites numbered, but the chapters are not numbered. So incredibly frustrating! A waste of money.

### 3/5 — Needs improvement

*2023-10-11, version 9.0.27*

I used this today with my boyfriend at the Cemetery and while the information was neat, the app needs some fixes.

1. Update the text so the term “northern aggression” is removed in the description of the enslaved valet of one of the people buried in the cemetery.
2. Have a full, zoomable map in the app that people can use to find their way around. My boyfriend and I got lost through following the app’s directions.
3. Update the grave lot pictures so they reflect how they look now. We almost missed more than one grave of note because the graves were a lot cleaner in the app’s older pictures
4. Fix it so the app doesn’t completely drain a phone battery in less than 3 hours. Luckily I had my charger, but it was the only possible app that could’ve caused this issue

### 2/5 — Boring

*2023-07-20, version 8.0.188*

Facts about the graves are pretty dull, they have a tour service there that seemed more interactive

### 2/5 — Not so great

*2022-08-31, version 7.3.96*

This app was incredibly frustrating. It assumes you are beginning near the museum at the entrance. If you aren’t you end up backtracking to find the first site. The directions aren’t always clear, narration begins when you aren’t yet at the site. If the app could find my location, why can’t it find where I am when I’m first starting and begin my tour from my location? The narration that we managed to get in the right place was very informative. Definitely cheaper than paying for a tour, and the money goes to help keep the cemetery up but, the app needs some refinement to be really useful.

### 2/5 — Disappointed

*2022-05-04, version 7.3.96*

Could be so much better and useful by simply numbering the names on the list to correspond with the points on the map so you can figure out where you are!

### 2/5 — Needs improvements

*2022-04-09, version 7.3.96*

This app had some good information but the gps location on it wasn’t very good. We had info playing for a gravesite several yards away. It got rather confusing. I think we would have preferred something that gave better verbal directions in the narration. Not really worth the money; and because the cemetery itself is a bit confusing, I would recommend getting a real tour if you are looking for something other than just a nice walk and photos.

### 2/5 — very confusing. Could not follow

*2021-08-17, version 7.3.23*

This app did not work very well in terms of guiding you around the cemetery. The map included in the app did not list the Lot or Section letters so, unless you could figure out which street you were on (and there were few street signs), it was difficult to follow. Furthermore, the audio was interesting but they should have put a corresponding site number next to the audio so you could find it.

A paper map would probably have worked better. We didn't do a tour or stop at the visitor center because it was raining.

### 1/5 — Really confusing

*2021-03-18, version 1.1*

It was really hard to follow the directions for this tour. We couldn’t find anything past step 3. Just pay a little extra for a guided tour by a physical tour guide and avoid this hassle.

### 3/5 — Narrow focus, overpriced

*2020-10-09, version 1.1*

Overall it’s an OK app, but at $5 it’s a bit overpriced for what it tells you.

Also, why is the app solely focused on the rich white men from the civil war and earlier? There’s clearly a lot more in the cemetery, so it’s weird to focus so narrowly. For instance, what’s up with the Jewish cemetery? Could be interesting to talk about more.

Finally, and I know that the south does tend to have a... different... interpretation of the civil war, but to tell the story of an enslaved man taking actions to fight agains “northern oppression” is honestly insane. Like, I know you don’t want to focus on the atrocities of slavery, but if you’re gonna talk about it, don’t gloss over it like it was no big deal. And, if you’re going to talk about slavery, definitely don’t pick a story of a man who helped his enslaver as though he was a hero fighting for liberty, when he had no liberty himself.

### 4/5 — An enjoyable self guided tour

*2020-09-22, version 1.1*

Although the app was a little clunky to use, it was informative and we found our way around to all the grave plots without too much difficulty. We found the maps helpful and accurate. The pictures of the grave plots were especially helpful to make sure we found our way around. Although we are southerners ourselves, we found the narrators to be entertaining, informative, and we really enjoyed the different southern drawls!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Useless

*2026-04-15, version 9.0.493*

I assumed this was legit because it wasn’t a third party app and was provided by Bonaventure itself. It is not worth downloading. The map GPS was accurate and we could use the map to see our location as we walked. No problem there. The narration never worked properly, however. It started automatically as we approached the intended spots, but not once did the narration match the graves where we stood. We stood beside Mercer’s grave and listened to a paid tour that arrived after us. When I restarted the app after they left, the app talked about another site not even in section H. Despite the map indicator showing our location at JM’s family plot correctly. I tried manually searching for the correct sections, but the app overrides input and returns to what it wants. Also, the narration starts as if you are still driving in by giving road directions, but it’s too fast to be useful and completely unnecessary as you are already there. Since it’s labeled as a Welcome section, why would I need driving directions? It also assumes you stopped just inside the entrance by the building to start. We didn’t and neither did the other car trying to use this app at the parking lot by the river. Their app too did not work as intended. I bought this so we could tour the grounds slowly due to limited mobility. As someone with a decade of professional app development and testing experience, this is a waste. I would lose my current job if I put this out for the public. Anyone saying they love it needs to provide proof of actual practical use. What good is quality history narrative if it’s presented in such a way that you can’t access it in real time. I only gave one star because at least I could use it to find Johnny Mercer’s grave site on the map. So essentially I just paid a dollar a minute for use. Rip off.

### 1/5 — Poor app

*2026-02-28, version 9.0.402*

Thankfully this money goes to a good place but this is one of the worst apps I’ve ever paid for. You’ll spend more time trying to figure things out than appreciating the cemetery. Extremely poor design.

### 1/5 — Flush $6 down the drain

*2025-01-02, version 9.0.96*

It would cost the same, be less frustrating, and take less time

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2024-07-04, version 9.0.96*

I downloaded because I wanted to enjoy a leisurely walk through the cemetery and learn while I did and I am with a lgroup of my children who I didn’t want to take an an expensive tour if they got bored. I got app several days ahead of time so I could cherry pick the places I would take them and it would never download the extra content.

### 1/5 — Didn’t work

*2024-02-01, version 9.0.52*

Paid $6 and it didn’t work. The tour wouldn’t download within the app, across three different networks. Something wrong with app.

### 1/5 — DOES NOT WORK

*2024-02-01, version 9.0.52*

This app did not work for me or for other people that were there.

### 1/5 — Don’t waste your time or money

*2024-01-30, version 9.0.52*

Would give zero stars. Purchased and downloaded the app on my iPhone 15 pro with IOS 17.3 while enroute to Bonaventure cemetery. Opened the app and immediately directed to download the tour media. I could not complete the download. Error message said media could not be downloaded, try again. Tried again and again without success. The app contained nothing without this download. The website link on the app was not useful and directs you to the app! Totally useless. At least I made a donation to the Bonaventure Historical society, but I was purchasing a product that did not function as expected.

### 1/5 — Wasted my money!

*2024-01-29, version 9.0.52*

I bought this app as I was about to go into the cemetery and the app was not functional except to direct to their website. COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY. DO NOT DOWNLOAD!

### 1/5 — Poorly designed app. Doesn’t work well.

*2023-11-18, version 9.0.52*

I hope some of this info finds its way to the developers to fix the App, because we love Bonaventure and have been there 3 times and are looking forward to a better tour next time…

The info presented in the app is just OK. Informative but Not presented in a way that keeps you interested. Instead of 20 different monotone script readers, get someone with some excitement who loves to tell you about what you’re seeing.

But the biggest problems are with the App itself. The navigation to each grave site and between sites is very poor. Transitions are awful. Navigation tries to use location sensing to pop up an audio when you are near something but it doesn’t work 90% of the time.

Finding your way between sites leaves you wandering and wondering. The narrative describes how to get there but the narratives can only get you there if you’ve found the site immediately preceding and unlike the gravesite audios, the site transition narratives can’t be found on their own. They should include these transitions in the list of audio narratives of the gravesites which are easily accessible.

Navigation using the JPEG of their map is about the only way to really find your way around, and I would never have made it otherwise, but with the technology available today like any Apple/Google/Waze location sensing mapping software with walking directions, I expected a lot more from this.

Lastly, the first audio narration with highway directions of how to get to Bonaventure Cemetery is is on EVERY page. Hit the wrong audio button at any gravesite or route and you’re back to the beginning … reset… and again listening to the directions to the Cemetery! Then you have to find your place in the tour again.

The App will leave you frustrated.

### 1/5 — Poorly executed app

*2023-05-17, version 8.0.156*

This app is very poorly designed. For example, there is a map with numbers, but no key, and the list of plots is not numbered. The directions are confusing. You cannot change the order of the tour. A complete waste of time and money. Don’t bother.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Very good

*2026-04-03, version 9.0.493*

I’m not sure why there are so many bad reviews. The only thing I think could be improved are some of the directions. Overall it was really helpful and was great for the price!

### 5/5 — A must have for a DIY Bonaventure Tour

*2025-03-14, version 9.0.308*

I gave this a 5 star to balance out some of the haters that might dissuade you from trying this. The GPS-aided map works fine to navigate you to all the must-sees and provided useful insights. Yes, it could be optimized as some reviews suggested, but it really works well and made our trip to Bonaventure a highlight of our Savannah vacation. I don’t regret not shelling out $36 a head instead for a one hour golf cart tour. We got to go at our own pace and saw everything up close and took great pictures.

### 5/5 — For what you get, it’s great!

*2024-10-12, version 9.0.96*

Considering that the proceeds benefit the Bonaventure Historical Society, and it allows you to do a very nice self-guided tour of the historical portion of the cemetery, I thought it was worth the $6. Purchased the app today, made sure to have everything downloaded, and then my family enjoyed traversing the cemetery, listening to the recordings for each included gravesite. I’d allow for couple hours to go through the whole tour provided by the app.

### 5/5 — Informative and interesting

*2021-06-01, version 1.1*

The app is very well worth the price and easy enough to navigate. It gives you cool little knowledge on important people in the cemetery and gives you a little more knowledge into the history of Savannah. We found it fun using the pictures and descriptions to find the gravestones. Great app makes exploring the graveyard more fun.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2020-10-16, version 1.1*

We came to the cemetery not knowing what we were looking for. This app navigated us through the cemetery and helped us stop at important places along the way! Loved the pictures and narrations, definitely worth the price!

### 5/5 — Very interesting!

*2020-07-04, version 1.1*

We did not have the same navigation issue as another reviewer stated they had. Once we enabled gps for this app it was very accurate as we drove and walked. Very enjoyable and worth the small cost!

### 5/5 — Great Historical Tour

*2020-07-04, version 1.1*

The app provided a wonderful way to learn about the many people buried at Bonaventure and the history of the cemetery. The stories were interesting and a nice way to learn.

### 4/5 — Almost perfect

*2023-10-13, version 9.0.27*

You need to enable the GPS and allow notifications and it will start reading the comments when you get near a marker. The only issue we found was the numbers on the map do not correspond to the comments. If they only would put “6” Johnson which matches to the “6” on the map it would a lot clear where you were well worth. 5.99

### 4/5 — Listen to the beginning before you go

*2021-07-13, version 1.1*

Overall, once we got oriented with our surroundings the app was great. One thing I wish we would have done was start listening to it before you get there. They give directions on where to park and where to enter the cemetery, which then leads you on your walk to the historic site.

### 4/5 — Little pricey but cheaper than a tour

*2020-10-29, version 1.1*

It’s a lot cheaper than a tour and had great information and fun facts that many of the other tours I’ve been on never mentioned. The person that mentioned it was narrow minded clearly didn’t go to the Jewish ones on the map because they were ones on there. “It’s rich white people” I don’t see how the tour guides could help that and the cemetery started from a group of rich white families in the 1800s, I’m not sure what diversity you expected to see. Anyways, I really enjoyed the different voices that told the stories as well. It’s not super accurate on the map locations but the voices tell you where to go next and with the names on all the plots it’s impossible not to find and gave us a game to find the next one so it wasn’t that difficult, people complaining are being a little ridiculous it’s not like it has to be there or it won’t play...
