I’d love to see more project/task management features so that I can do more with this app. Other helpful features would be: • Ability to customize the dashboard widgets • Sync with Google Calendar • Add ability to connect to Make, n8n, and Relay.app for more powerful automated workflows In general this app has so much potential, but it feels like it’s falling behind amongst newer, better services that are actively developing. ### 3/5 — Needs more *2025-08-13* This would be much more usable if there was time in and out as well as subtasks. I can’t add time without these features. ### 4/5 — HelloBonsai Direct vs App Difference *2024-08-02* Been using hellobonsai for years now and they have introduced new features consistently based on feedback from agencies, freelancers, etc. My only complaint is that this app has not kept pace. The app experience is extremely limited and doesn't give the ability to create new proposals, contracts, create new projects and clients; etc. It's simply a quick way to generate an invoice and mark something paid. Would love to see this application meet the same standard as the desktop version. Oh, on the browser version, the old navigation UI was much easier to navigate. The sub-menus to find proposals, clients, contracts etc is feels like plugging a USB in the wrong way. Not interested in memorizing a new logo suite for yet another update. Please give options for how to display the navigation ;) ### 2/5 — It’s a good service but a terrible app *2024-07-01* Bonsai is a very good and simple service that supports multiple currencies. But the app is really terrible, and old. It is clunky and completely signs me out every time. I’m in Australia, so I think that might be the reason due to some weird security parameter. It’s annoying. ### 3/5 — A decent app lacking basic tools *2024-03-21* The primary benefit I can think of from a mobile bonsai app would be tracking expenses on the go. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem like a high priority for them. I thought I could easily submit receipts with the share sheet or apple shortcuts but no such automation tools exist. So everyday you need to log back in . ### 1/5 — Terrible *2023-11-29, version 2.9.2* Did one invoice with them and they said they couldn't verify my business after I've been on business for 3 years. They ended up refunding the invoice to a random client that obviously wouldn't pay again after the invoice was processed more than 3 weeks ago.. Make sure if you're going to make a first invoice to do a test one. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — RUN AWAY!!!!! *2026-07-20, version 3.0.17* SCAM. The worst app and the worst customer service I’ve ever received ( It’s all AI) They hold your money hostage. Takes weeks to be paid (I still haven’t) Clients paid the invoice on July 9th, it’s the 20th still no payment. Took a little over $200 of the payment. I was asked to send in images of my drivers license, which I now regret. I’ve still not been paid. Run don’t walk away from this app it’s a scam. ### 1/5 — iOS app essentially useless *2026-07-18* The web app is phenomenal, but the iOS app has clearly had no real effort put in to bridging the experiences. Timers are buggy and don’t work (they’ll disappear if you switch screens or apps), extremely limited features, no reason to use instead of or in addition to the web app. This was supposed to be a way to manage projects and work kept in Bonsai on the go, but you’re better off logging in to the web app. A shame the design and dev teams aren’t allotted resources to make this app a meaningful companion; a more robust ecosystem would strongly affect my decision to subscribe and spend money on Bonsai. ### 1/5 — Update broke app *2026-06-18, version 3.0.16* The app just won’t load at all now, weird debugger alerts come up. Tried to uninstall and reinstall and the login page keeps failing my authentication. How did this ever even pass review? ### 1/5 — Clunky unprofessional *2026-02-01, version 3.0.14* Had a terrible experience with this company. Wouldn’t recommend stick to something bigger not this clunky hard to navigate app that literally asked me for proof that my client was real. After being on there platform for several years, always experienced problems but it wasn’t until they did this that was the final straw. This app asks for reviews far too often. ### 1/5 — Terrible experience - Untrustworthy and Unclear Policies *2024-11-19, version 2.9.8* They collect all your personal and business information, then cancel your account without any explanation. Be cautious about sharing sensitive data with a company that lacks transparency and could pose a risk to your business. ### 1/5 — WARNING!!! DO NOT USE THIS SOFTWARE *2024-02-22* I’m a licensed and insured contractor I was using the software and enjoying it. Until I was subjected to a random manual review and kicked off the platform without reason or warning. When asked they said that they couldn’t give me a reason as to why but good luck in my business. I thought that was very coldhearted, passive, aggressive and downright discriminatory, and I will be pursuing this further, in addition to that they have unjustly withheld money that was transferred to me by a client for a reasonable amount of time. Thanks Bonsai! ### 5/5 — Exactly what I need as a new freelancer *2023-10-13* After 20+ years in a B2B vertical, I find myself giving the freelance thing a go. Hello Bonsai is fantastic for what I need - primarily an invoicing tool with automated reminders, and the ability for clients to pay via ACH, credit card, or other methods like a check (or manually recorded if they pay outside the system). A second great feature is making proposals - and lots of templates to use, and one was perfect for what I needed - and the built-in ability to get a binding e-signature, no need for Docusign! A third feature that I use everyday is the project / task timer, so easy to keep track of billable hours, no need to use Toggl or another tool like that. And easy to change the hours manually, or keep track of many different projects / clients all at once. Haven’t had to use a lot of expense tracking but will be for sure needing it come tax time.
