### 5/5 — Simply Phenomenal!

*2026-05-06, version 2026.1.1*

You HAVE to try this. It’s honestly so good!

### 5/5 — Excellent app, very helpful!

*2026-05-04, version 2026.1.1*

I like how quick and easy the app is. Well done.

### 5/5 — Everything I wanted!

*2026-05-04, version 2026.1.1*

Apps like these remind me that if there’s an app I’ve always imagined and desired, I should probably look it up because it might already exist. If you’re someone like me who has struggled with scanning text using the native Apple Notes app, you’re in for a real treat with this one — and it’s free, no less, with zero ads!

Dragging segments of text is effortless, page numbers are easily stored and organized, there are options for personal notes and thoughts, books are listed with cover art so they’re easily discoverable, keyword search filters, and an export feature. And did I mention it’s free? A no-brainer if you suffer from book amnesia.

### 5/5 — Essential for academics

*2026-04-29, version 2026.1.1*

As a graduate student, constantly reading and needing to preserve important bits of what I read, this app has quickly become essential in my study and research. I cannot recommend it enough!

### 5/5 — Cette application est génial! Je l’utilise pratiquement tous les jours!

*2026-04-15, version 2026.1.1*

Merci

### 5/5 — Simple but powerful

*2026-04-10, version 2026.1.1*

I love the simple design and how useful it is. I use a lot not only to highlight physical books but ebooks as well. The new widget feature is amazing.

### 5/5 — One of the best reading apps around

*2026-04-02, version 2026.1.1*

Truly, it’s well designed, useful, and does exactly what most readers (myself included) want: help you track and remember what you read. Used it for years and will forever!

### 5/5 — This has served me best of all apps

*2026-04-01, version 2026.1.1*

There are no accidents in the universe and this app proved it again. I never look in the App Store but for some reason one day I did and happened to see this app. I thought “wow” I hope this works.

And it did. I read over 50 books a year and am never without a highlighter. But when I finish the book and put it away, all that effort seems lost. Now I can have all the pertinent material right at the tips of my fingers.

Of all the apps I have I use maybe 4 routinely. This is one of those 4 and I am so grateful to the developer.

### 5/5 — The best mobile electronic annotation app

*2026-03-26, version 2025.4*

I say best because the workflow I use is so useful and practical. I take a screenshot on my phone, import it, select and annotate. What I wish it did was to go beyond the category concept of books to include a podcast, video or web page. I make collections with these names but they’re all under the aegis of Books!

If it could export all annotations as markdown files that would be the cherry on the whipped cream…

### 5/5 — Perfect in every way

*2026-03-08, version 2025.4*

One of those apps that does not re-invent the wheel, rather solves a glaring gap in our reading lives, and does it very well. Highly recommend.

### 5/5 — Begeistert

*2026-02-14*

Ich bin wirklich begeistert von der App! Die Erkennung von Sätzen und Paragraphen funktioniert sehr gut. Das Highlighting funktioniert schnell und die Zitate können einfach exportiert werden.

### 4/5 — Wonderful and extremely well-designed

*2026-02-10, version 2025.4*

I recently decided to replace a well-known service with Highlighted, and I'm very happy. To be clear, I'm mostly using the app with an e-book reader, and it works just as well as it does with physical books. Yes, it's a manual process, but I don't mind the added focus this requires. I'm also genuinely impressed by the details included to streamline the import process (multiple scans, numbered selections, review etc).

Two things I'd note: 1) formatting breaks tend to be seen as returns, and 2) it would be fantastic if a custom template could be used with the Markdown export option. But really: well done.

### 5/5 — Excellent and indispensable

*2026-01-26, version 2025.4*

Works great. For any academic this is an indispensable app which makes reading books and physical media - which I prefer - as easy as reading PDFs or other electronic media as far as note- taking goes. Easy export to Endnote or whatever.

### 5/5 — A easy top 10 app for me

*2026-01-13, version 2025.4*

One the best things I’ve ever had on my phone. Easy to use and easy to organize my notes and quotes that I got from books from people or things.

### 5/5 — Exactly what I wanted

*2026-01-01, version 2025.4*

I first downloaded this app about a year ago and it did just what I wanted it to, which was save my highlights in my physical book as a digital pdf I could search through. I stopped using it for a while because the text transcription wasn’t always great and I don’t have steady enough hands to accommodate that.

I just updated the app and now it’s perfect, the text recognition is so so much better. This is an invaluable tool to me as a student who has to do a lot of reading and I honestly can’t believe it’s free. Huge thank you to the developer!!

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2025-12-30, version 2025.4*

Just really great and useful. Great widget too.

### 5/5 — very good and useful

*2025-12-24, version 2025.4*

Thank you for developing this app. There is a small problem. I found that the detection of Chinese sentences is not accurate enough, there will be extra spaces in the middle of the recognised sentences.

### 5/5 — Very good aid to take notes and make annotations

*2025-11-08, version 2025.4*

I was pleasantly surprised by how simple and easy to use this app is. Just take a photo, highlight your favorite part, and save it for later. It’s practical, versatile, and works great for anyone who often reads and wants to capture or organize text. Definitely recommend it!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Frustrated

*2026-07-23, version 2026.4*

Just downloaded, Didn’t see any user instructions. Within 30min I found 1) the app puts notes in reverse order 2) tags are not editable (misspelled words). At this point the only way to correct is to delete book & start over.

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2024-02-21, version 2023.2*

I tried to use this several times with iPad and iPhone. I found the functionality was not workable and have begun to use the Notes app on my iPhone instead. I have problems with the camera capture, the text comes up with a ton of typos, or a single word left justified rather than a sentence that runs across the page. it interacts weirdly with the iPad camera, requiring you to turn the iPad awkwardly to capture text. Do not recommend.

### 1/5 — You can’t highlight pdfs

*2023-11-26, version 2023.2*

You can’t highlight pdfs only books.

### 1/5 — Great idea, but just constantly crashes

*2023-07-24, version 2023.1*

.

### 1/5 — Apple only Sign-in

*2023-07-01*

Encontrei o app e achei a proposta maravilhosa. Fiquei decepcionada pois oferece unicamente o sign-in via Apple ID.

Quando houver essa possibilidade eu volto.

**Developer response:** Hi there! I'm Damir, creator of Highlighted. I'm the only person working on this project and Sign in with Apple was the easiest way to get started and build the app when I started the project. That said, I completely understand your perspective, and that's why I'm hard at work at removing the requirement to sign in, along with adding a full offline support. This change is not trivial so it will take a while to get live on the App Store but it's in the works. I hope this makes sense, and I hope you'll reconsider your rating. Thanks. Best regards!

### 1/5 — Bloqué par l’authentification

*2022-08-21*

**Developer response:** Why are you leaving a 1 star review if you haven’t even tried the app? It’s not Highlighted that’s requiring a 2-factor authentication, it’s Apple through their Sign in with Apple. I hope you’ll consider changing your rating and review because it doesn’t reflect the app’s quality and really hurts the average rating and visibility. I’m a solo developer working hard on it and would appreciate your understanding. Thank you!

### 1/5 — Убогая реализация хорошей идеи

*2021-04-10*

Убогое распознавание русского текста. Если это вообще можно назвать распознаванием. Идея - зачёт, ее реализация - никакая от слова совсем

**Developer response:** Hello!

I'm Damir, creator of Highlighted. I'm very sorry you are experiencing this. Highlighted is using Apple's text recognition technology which unfortunately does not yet support Russian language. This is noted in the app when adding a book in Russian language.

That said, I'm confident that Apple will add support for more languages, including Russian, very soon. Once they do, I'll make sure it's available in Highlighted on day one as well.

As a solo developer, I work very hard to keep improving Highlighted every day. I really hope you will reconsider your review and update your rating. It would mean a lot to me, and help others discover Highlighted as well.

Feel free to reach out to me at damir.stuhec@gmail.com if you need further help or info. Thank you!

Best,

### 1/5 — Lack of explanation about how to use the app

*2021-03-08, version 2021.1*

Plus, it seems tricky and cumbersome to highlight text with the iPad camera.

### 1/5 — Apagão todas as minhas marcações

*2021-02-03*

O aplicativo simplesmente apagou todas as minhas marcações de uma hora para a outra. Acabei perdendo todas as partes importantes de um livro que eu estava lendo!

**Developer response:** Hello! I’m sorry you were experiencing this. You can rest assured that you DID NOT lose any of your data. Open the app again and you will see all your data. Highlighted service was unavailable only for a few minutes due to the server upgrade. Let me know if I can help you any further. I hope you will reconsider your review as well. Thanks!

### 1/5 — You can’t add a book that does not exist in the list

*2020-05-05*

The highlight works really well, but if the book you are reading does not exist in the list, you can’t organize your notes properly. My suggestion is to keep the search functionality to add books, but also let users add books manually. In my case I’m reading an old book that does not exist in the list, but I’m able to create notes selecting an random book.

**Developer response:** Hello! Highlighted supports adding custom books for quite a while now. Would you mind updating your review? I would really appreciate that. Feel free to also reach out to me directly at damir.stuhec@gmail.com in case you need any help. Thank you.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Hats Off to Damir!

Amazing is just the beginning! Game Changer! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ is not enough stars!

### 5/5 — Reminds me of great books I’ve read

*2026-08-09, version 2026.5*

I have been using it for about 7/8 years now and I love this app. It is so simple to use and yet it is so functional. I now have quotes from all the books that I’ve read and highlighted popping up on my widgets on my Home Screen. This really helps me to remember and recall what I’ve read or come back to it later when discussing it with someone.

I love that the developer of this app doesn’t ask for money or personal information. It’s not often that I write a review on the App Store but this one feels like such a gift, and I’m very thankful to the developer for making this!

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2026-05-15, version 2026.1.1*

Taking notes in books just became easier. You simply scan the page and highlight what you want to keep. Or, make your own notes.

The tags and page numbers are also a huge help.

### 5/5 — One of My Favorites

*2026-05-14, version 2026.1.1*

This app has become a critical part of my weekly workflow. I read, research, and put together presentations. This allows me to easily capture all the highlights from my physical books and store them digitally so I can access them any time, anywhere. This has truly been a game changer for me. I wish I had this in college or earlier in my career. Highly recommend!

### 5/5 — Finally - Simple, Clean and Thoughtful

*2026-05-07, version 2026.1.1*

I downloaded a ton of apps to track my paperback book highlights. This one does it thoughtfully (able to highlight multiple sections at a time!) and keeps things simple. You can search the highlights and your custom notes for each of those highlights very easily. Plus you can export. Give this a shot, you won’t be disappointed. And if you like it, please support the creator, it’s free without ads and he updates the app regularly. Let’s reward him for the work that he’s put into this masterpiece!
