## What is Book/Read?

This app is not for you. This app exists because my wife looked at the mountain of professional, multi-million dollar options on the market and decided none of them were quite as good as something I could cobble together in my spare time. So, to mitigate the risk of being replaced by a more compliant AI husband, here we are.

Important Notice for the General Public:

You are NOT the target audience: This app was built for a user base of exactly one (1) wife, four (4) relatives, and maybe three (3) friends who were too polite to say no.

The Entitlement Buffer: This app is not free. This is a deliberate barrier to entry designed to repel the entitled masses who enjoy leaving one-star reviews because an app doesn't predict the weather or validate their life choices.

The Trespasser’s Fee: If you ignore this warning and buy it anyway, congratulations—you’ve just donated to my "Tolerating the Internet" fund. Your money will be spent on a beverage to help me cope with your existence.

Feedback Policy: Unless we're living together, your opinion is statistically irrelevant. If you find a bug, tell your own partner about it; I’m already busy enough being told what’s wrong with the app by mine.

If you aren't on the authorized list of people allowed to eat the 'good' snacks in our pantry, please move along. There are thousands of other apps made by people who actually want your money and input. I am not one of them.

Get off my lawn,

The Grumpy Old Man who created this.

### 4/5 — Exactly as advertised (Unfortunately)

*2026-02-03*

I was conned into using this app by the developer, a man whose primary personality trait is yelling at clouds. I assumed it would be a buggy mess of over-engineered nonsense.

Annoyingly, it works.

It lets you log books. That’s it. There are no social features, no gamification, and no “AI assistants” trying to sell you things. It is aggressively simple. It’s like the developer took his own grumpy, anti-social personality and distilled it into Swift code.

I give it 4 stars due to being coerced into using it, I’ll change it to 5 stars if the developer doesn’t ask me to review his next app…

**Developer response:** "Distilling my personality into Swift code" is the highest compliment I have ever received. It ensures type safety, stability, and zero tolerance for nonsense—much like my approach to this friendship.

You admit it works. You admit it's bug-free. You admit it does exactly what it says. And yet, you withhold a star based on a personal vendetta.

Typical.

I’ll take the 4 stars as a badge of honor. It means I annoyed you enough to write this, but the code was too good for you to lie about it.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.7 — 2026-05-02

The immediate cause of this update was my wife holding up a copy of "The Q" by Beth Brower and asking, with the patience of someone who has been married to a software developer for a very long time, why the app she was specifically promised would track her books could not find this particular book. I had no good answer. I had a couch, and I had incentive.

Turns out OpenLibrary — a noble, free, community-maintained archive of human knowledge — doesn't have every book. Shocking. Apparently decades of volunteers cataloguing the accumulated output of Western civilization still missed a few titles. So I added Google Books as a fallback, because one institution isn't enough.

Search now queries both OpenLibrary and Google Books simultaneously, presenting results in clearly labeled sections so you can compare and choose whichever one got the author's name right. Books remember where their data came from, and "Refresh Book Details" is smart enough to go back to the same source instead of wandering off to ask someone else.

A "Powered by Google" badge was added to the detail view because Google's terms of service asked nicely, and I am nothing if not compliant with the terms of service of multi-trillion dollar corporations.

The app still costs too much. That's intentional. It's working.

### 1.6 — 2026-04-28

Fixed the app menu on Mac, which was stubbornly introducing itself as "MyReadingJournal"
despite having a perfectly good name. It now correctly says "Book/Read," which is the name on
the door, the name on the tin, and the name my wife uses when she's not calling it "the book
thing."

The book cover on the detail page now stays pinned to the top of the screen instead of
drifting toward the middle like it was looking for a more comfortable spot. It was not. It
lives at the top now.

Various under-the-hood improvements were made that you will never notice, which is exactly
how it should be.

### 1.4 — 2026-03-23

Updated ISBN workflow. If the book is not found by ISBN, you can take a picture of the cover and add the Title/Author to your list. It will crop the book picture to just the cover and try to populate the title and author from the cover.

### 1.3.1 — 2026-02-02

We’re issuing an immediate recall on the last update.

Turns out, in my excitement to give you those half-stars you didn't need, I broke something you probably didn't use. But my perfectionism (ha!) wouldn't let it slide. So here is a patch.

Please stop downloading this. It only encourages me. This app is still not for you.

### 1.3 — 2026-02-02

Half stars. That's it. That's the update.

Rating a book in nice, clean whole numbers wasn't "good enough" for my wife. It has to be 4 stars, plus one of those stars that looks like it got caught in a closing elevator door. We're going for accuracy, folks.

And in case you were wondering: This app is still not for you.
