## What is BookStax?

BookStax – Your BookStack Wiki. In Your Pocket.

You self-host your knowledge – so why should mobile access feel like a compromise? BookStax brings your BookStack wiki natively to iPhone. Fast, offline-ready, and built with privacy first.

Read, Write, Search – All on iPhone

Navigate your entire knowledge base using the familiar Shelves → Books → Chapters → Pages hierarchy. Breadcrumb navigation always shows where you are. Edit pages with a full Markdown editor – including live preview, formatting toolbar, image upload, and tag management. And when you're offline, the local cache keeps your content available anyway.

Your Data. Your Server. Your Device.

BookStax connects exclusively to your own BookStack instance. No third-party servers, no telemetry, no cloud accounts. Your API credentials are stored securely in the iOS Keychain – and nowhere else. Full GDPR compliance by design, because no personal data ever leaves your device.

Features at a Glance
- Full navigation through your BookStack hierarchy
- Full-text search with filters by type and tags
- Markdown editor with live preview and image upload
- Offline read access via local cache
- Secure connection via API token (iOS Keychain)
- Light / Dark / System mode, 8 accent colors, adaptive app icon
- Available in English, German, and Spanish

Requirements
A self-hosted BookStack instance (accessible via HTTPS) and an API token from your BookStack profile settings. No BookStack yet? Visit web.bookstax.app to get started in minutes.

BookStax is free – for everyone who wants to truly own their knowledge.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.1 — 2026-07-29

New in BookStax 2.1:

• Make available offline: Download entire books and shelves — pages stay readable without a connection.
• Offline full-text search: Search finds downloaded content even in airplane mode, including match previews.
• Spotlight: Pages saved offline show up in iOS search and open right in the app.
• Manage in Settings: An overview of your offline content with storage size and easy removal.
• Demo server: Try BookStax without your own installation using the official BookStack demo server — with a step-by-step guide.
• Editor: The Markdown/visual editor switcher now has its own row and no longer overlaps buttons.
• Smaller improvements and bug fixes.

### 2.0 — 2026-07-14

New in 2.0 — polish and more reliability.

• Updated links: Website, Support and Privacy now go straight to bookstax.app.
• More reliable premium unlock: The themes purchase was reworked — buying and restoring behave more cleanly, and the status is refreshed when you open the app.
• "More apps for self-hosters": The four sibling apps are now shown right inside the app with their real icons and App Store links.

Smaller improvements and bug fixes.

### 1.9 — 2026-07-04

New in 1.9 — Writing gets visual, tags get flexible.

• Visual editor: Pages can now be edited WYSIWYG — bold, headings, lists, tables and more, no Markdown syntax required. Switch seamlessly between Write, Visual and Preview in the editor bar. The classic Markdown editor stays fully available.
• Edit tags: Tags on books and shelves can now be renamed and deleted directly — just tap the chip.
• Video playback: Embedded videos on pages now play inside the app too (previously browser-only).

Smaller improvements and bug fixes.

### 1.8 — 2026-06-25

New in 1.8 — A major refresh that makes your BookStack books and notes faster and nicer to use.

• New start: A personalized Home view shows favorites, recently opened and recently updated pages at a glance.
• Favorites: A star button to pin shelves, books, chapters and pages. Includes a new Favorites widget for your home screen.
• Breadcrumb navigation: Tap any path segment to jump straight back.
• Activity feed: See what was recently created, updated or deleted — straight from the BookStack audit log.
• Attachments: View, download and upload file and link attachments on pages.
• Mobile management: Create, rename, move and recursively delete shelves, books and chapters right on iPhone.
• Trash: Restore individual items or empty the bin in one tap.
• Edit properties: Change name, description and cover for shelves and books. Generate covers with Image Playground on supported devices.
• Tags: Per book and shelf — comma-separated input with colored chips and suggestions from the server pool.
• Premium features: Three premium reader themes, a custom accent color per server, and multiple server profiles, unlocked via a one-time purchase.
• Splash screen, new floating action button and many smaller polish updates.

### 1.7 — 2026-06-15

New in BookStax 1.7:

• Checkable task lists: Task boxes in the Reader are tappable; the change is persisted to the server immediately. Lists auto-continue in the editor.
• Export sheet: Share pages, chapters and books as PDF, Markdown, plain text or HTML.
• Smarter wiki links: Internal BookStack links open the target page in-app instead of in the browser.
• Code blocks: Syntax highlighting (light & dark) plus a copy button on every block.
• Biometric app lock: Optional Face ID / Touch ID with configurable grace period and a privacy overlay in the App Switcher.
• Recycle Bin tab: Restore or permanently delete shelves, books, chapters and pages from one place.
• Cross-promotion: A dedicated detail view for sibling apps (gyokuro, dock-g, Mobile MA) with real App-Store icons.
• Iris is the new default theme — matching the app icon.
• Theme selection now sticks across launches.
• Large navigation title now renders in a deeper accent tone.
• Long-press menus replaced by clear swipe actions.
• Many small refinements.
