### 1/5 — All Data will be wiped by 1/31/2023

*2022-12-12, version 3.24*

Sold out and left all your customers high and dry. You are the total definition of scum.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2022-11-11, version 3.23*

I’ve used the free version on iOS for a few years. I don’t know what has happened but now I am unable to open any files, just says ‘waiting’. I have tried uninstalling and installing, iOS is latest version. This issue has gone on for a few weeks.
To be honest id give up on the app but as my files are encrypted I can’t save them elsewhere. Bit of a disaster.

### 1/5 — I have had enough….

*2022-11-04*

Every update to this app makes it progressively worse. 3.22 is the latest. Now, I can’t even download/view my Boxcryptor files from OneDrive on my iPad or iPhone! I even uninstalled/reinstalled the app. Yes, both devices are updated to the latest iOS . When I try to download and view a file, the circle of death just sits and spins. All of the files in my other apps will download just fine so it is not an issue with my devices.
Version 3.21 of this app at least worked although as soon as I would lock the app, Boxcryptor auto clears the download cache so now the files are not available offline. Auto clearing the cache is ridiculous. I don’t always have a data connection but I still need access to these files. If the app is locked, the files are secured, so why clear the cache?
You folks had a great product and now you have essentially made it useless. I am cancelling my plan and am in the process of moving to another encrypted storage provider.

### 1/5 — Won’t refund

*2022-09-30, version 3.21*

The app worked but was not to my needs and requirement. I filled the form on their web portal (the only option they have) for the refund. Never beard back from them. Did that again … still no response. I had to escalate the case to PayPal and they looked after me.

Will not recommend this app to anyone. Now, for me the developers are into a money grab business.

### 1/5 — Uploading issues

*2022-09-18, version 3.20*

This app has many issues especially when trying to upload a lot of things at once

I get error messages or it freezes or doesn’t upload at all

So 1 star until this is fixed

### 3/5 — Needs help

*2022-05-20, version 3.17*

I think it works. I have the paid OSX version but you need iOS versions for devices. However, these versions lack instruction or help so if you want to change preferences or provider access after initial set up (which is easy but lacks explanation of what to do) there is no easy way to do so. I now can’t see providers in Boxcryptor folder because I did not turn them on in intial set up and no way to know how to do so after set up.

### 2/5 — Performance is a MAJOR issue even on an iPhone 13 Pro Max

*2022-03-12, version 3.15*

Performance is a MAJOR issue even on an iPhone 13 Pro Max. Files app is barely usable, files take MINUTES to open in the Boxcryptor volume. Definitely wish I could get a refund

### 1/5 — Waste of Money & Whole lot of Panic

*2022-02-25, version 3.15*

Before downloading BoxCryptor app, I had about 7.5Gigs of free storage in my iPad. After downloading BoxCryptor app, it started eating through my storage without me knowing it. My files are on my cloud account, soI barely have any files on my iPad.
The size of the app is only ~25mg, but what was stored through the BoxCryptor on my cloud account was taking over 9Gigs on my tablet!! (Remember I only had 7.5Gig available initially) What gives?! Once I deleted the app - which was prompting me of a bug all the time - I got my available storage back. In my opinion the entire service from the app to the none-existent technical support is worthless. There’s no Tel# you can call, and they still have not gotten back to me. Next time I do myself a favour…I will save myself a whole lot of panic by storing my files in some other way.
I strongly believe that this company does not have confidence in its own service, otherwise they would offer ‘free trial’ service, or a limited service for free.

### 1/5 — Useless app

*2022-02-03, version 3.14*

Can’t even add a single provider (free version).

### 4/5 — App won’t accept code during log in.

*2022-01-27, version 3.14*

Rating update: I was able to get in contact with support and reset my 2FA. The website made it sound like unless I was paying for one of their memberships, I was unlike to get help or a response. Glad they were quick at responding and helping out.

Old review:
While I’ve loved the service and app, I’m unable to log in even though I’ve got all my credentials. When I attempt to log in, during the 2-factor authentication, it won’t accept the code provided by Google Authenticator, no matter how many times I confirm it and re-attempt.

### 1/5 — Boxcryptor on iCloud Drive via Files app only accesses Boxcryptor folder

*2022-01-16*

When using Boxcryptor on iCloud Drive through the Files app, it only has access to the Boxcryptor folder on iCloud, no others. This is unlike using Boxcryptor on a Mac where it has access to the entire iCloud drive. If you only encrypt some folders in your folder hierarchy, you must store everything under the Boxcryptor iCloud Drive folder regardless.

This is unlike using Boxcryptor with Dropbox, Google Drive or any other cloud storage where Boxcryptor has access to the entire folder hierarchy.

**Developer response:** For technical reasons, the handling of the Boxcryptor integration for iCloud Drive differs between iOS and macOS. Documents and folders to be synced to an iOS device via the Boxcryptor drive must be stored in the “iCloud” location under “Boxcryptor” on your Mac. The "iCloud Drive" location on macOS and iOS itself contains only the encrypted data (.bc). On iOS, you can access your data directly from the Boxcryptor location in the Files app.

Within the Boxcryptor folder, unencrypted data could be stored as well. However, we strongly advise against this. For more information on using Boxcryptor on macOS and iOS, please visit https://www.boxcryptor.com/en/help/manage-cloud-providers-and-locations/ios/.

If you have any further questions or problems, please contact our technical support via mail (support@boxcryptor.com). You are welcome to refer to this message if you choose to do so.

### 1/5 — Valerie Leslie Ms

*2021-12-04, version 3.13*

Have been trying to connect to this account for the last two weeks, money has been removed from my account, plus I wanted a one year subscription it has been changed to two years. All I want now is to cancel the account.as for the review it will only accept favourable nicknames!!!

### 4/5 — Works flawlessly

*2021-11-14, version 3.12*

I had cryptomator for a while but was to worried of the vault messing up, and I had about 150gb vault and started to lag. This works better! I wish the files integration was an option and that there was a backup for folderkey

### 1/5 — It used to be great

*2021-10-06, version 3.12*

I don’t know why but for some reason the last update removed a lot of the protection that I wanted. Now my files show up in recent and in search. Also there is no option for PIN or Face ID to unlock. Integration with files was a bad move and it makes me feel much less secure.

### 1/5 — Does not work on iOS anymore

*2021-09-28*

With the recent update removing boxcryptors browser and forcing us to use apples files app, I’ve found that it barely works. I can not access my files. It constantly shows a server error or something. The files show up for a second and then disappear. I’ve had to go to my Mac computer to access the files. This is fairly useless to me now as I can’t take my files with me on my iPad. I’ve used this app for years, it’s too bad the changes have rendered it useless. Maybe it is because I was using a vpn, but in the past that wasn’t a problem, so who knows.

**Developer response:** We are sorry to hear you can’t access your files on your iPad. If you aren’t running the latest version (3.12) yet, we recommend a manual update and a device restart. Should your problems persist, we emphasize a fresh install. In any case, please feel free to contact our support team (support@boxcryptor.com) if your issues can’t be fixed with the proposed steps. They are happy to assist you. /jj

### 1/5 — Where is the local account option?

*2021-09-28, version 3.11*

What a terrible interface progression it has been with this app. Why are you disturbing the users to use online account? With iOS 15 the app does not launch with an airdropped local account file. There is no option whatsoever to open the local account key file. Shameful!

### 1/5 — Don’t use this on the iPad Pro M1

*2021-09-21*

The program now fails to send updates to the document on the cloud. If you look at Files/Boxcryptor it keep creating copies of the same file name with the exact same time, but none of them contain the updated data. It’s useless at the moment. You can fix it temporarily by deleting the app and reinstalling, but that’s not very helpful if you’ve lost the data you typed in. This started a few weeks ago - I think with the new Files integration.

**Developer response:** We are sorry to hear you had problems updating your documents with our App. We hope our support team was able to fix your problem./jj

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Broken

*2025-03-04, version 3.29*

I have used Boxcryptor free for the last 3 years mostly the Windows desktop version.
Just tried the iPhone app (old version ) and it doesn’t work so I updated to this latest version but it doesn’t work either. Cannot find a user with that name.
Fortunately the desktop version still can.

### 1/5 — New accounts no longer allowed

*2025-01-18, version 3.29*

Tried to use, but received message that new accounts no longer allowed

### 1/5 — Awful handling of retirement

*2023-09-09, version 3.25*

Unclear instructions, missing notifications until the last minute, and dupes on dupes on dupes on dupes. Spent so much time cleaning up their poorly designed exit strategy. I hope they got paid enough by Dropbox to ignore their customers.

### 1/5 — Garbage app, garbage company

*2023-02-01, version 3.24*

They kept removing features and then just shut it all down. Good riddance to bad garbage

### 1/5 — They’re canceling accounts on 1-31-23

*2023-01-03, version 3.24*

Just got a email from them saying my account and all its data will be deleted…no reason or explanation given. Apparently, other folks are receiving the same notice. All I can say is good riddance and goodbye because their service was horrible and I never trusted them to begin with….so delete away. Bye Bye, you won’t be missed.
*Update: Dropbox has acquired Boxcryptor Dec. ‘22. In doing so, Dropbox will eventually add Zero Knowledge encryption to their services. Great huh? Not unless you want to pay $20 a month for their required Business account.

### 1/5 — Deleting accounts

*2022-12-21, version 3.24*

They must be folding the service, they sent a notice of account deletion. Why is it still on the App Store?

### 1/5 — Glad to see this garbage app going away

*2022-12-21, version 3.24*

Back in 2014-2016, messaged this company bc there app messed up my iTunes library which was being stored in Apples iCloud Drive. When I went to decrypt, it had swapped the name of the files from what was originally the song and corrupted about 50% of my library I’d built up since 2000’s. Lost $$$$ of data. When I reached out to support they were useless and I eventually gave up. Glad Dropbox decided to nuke this horrid product and its team.

### 1/5 — Sellout

*2022-12-21, version 3.24*

A big middle finger to long time users.

### 1/5 — Awful

*2022-12-20, version 3.24*

The app crashed so much I couldn’t use it. I just got an email saying my account is being deleted. No explanation but I assume for not using it. How can I when the app doesn’t work? I wish we could give zero stars.

### 1/5 — Wow.

*2022-12-17, version 3.24*

Sold out and screwed its customers. And it appears Dropbox is only going to be employing Boxcryptor’s technology for business users. What a shame.

Stay away from anything that comes from this company. You cannot rely on them. You’ll be a long-term test subject for their proof of concept before they sell out and bail.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great app to protect your data

*2022-12-16*

This application is an excellent way to encrypt your data. It integrates with the iOS native file app, making it extremely easy to use.

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2022-02-27*

The idea to integrate the application in the file app was brilliant. It makes a lot of people including me angry at first but with time I begin to appreciate the forward thinking of people behind it. it’s simple, effective and again brilliant.

**Developer response:** Thank you very much for your supportive review! We appreciate your positive feedback and keep on working to provide you with the best possible usability.

### 5/5 — Update is Great : what we only dreamed of !

*2021-09-30*

Boxcryptor takes customer input seriously- after many complaints (including mine) - Boxcryptor has re- introduced a pincode or touch-id option to secure the Boxcryptor files on your device. Great! That’s a company taking constructive remarks at heart. I’m back. Big fan again. Well done

**Developer response:** Thank you for updating your review and your kind words. We are very happy you're satisfied with our latest updates. /jj

### 5/5 — Love it

*2021-07-06, version 3.08*

Great free app with YubiKey and FIDO U2F authentication support. Works fine for me. It allows me to use my Bitcoin hardware wallet to encrypt my sensitive files. The Linux portable version has been a bit buggy but this review is for the iOS app which has never let me down. :)

### 5/5 — Update is a big improvement

*2021-05-07, version 3.05*

I just updated to the latest version which integrates into the iOS Files app. It was frustrating initially as it didn’t show up in the Files app under edit for selection. A restart was required to fix that.
Now it works great and is a much better integration than before, minus the face ID protection loss of cause. Now I have disabled all others services from Files view and can use Boxcryptor as the sole doorway to all those cloud services with a fully encrypted solution for all cloud drives. That’s AWESOME!
After testing the free version for two years, during the past 6 months I’ve been testing the paid version which includes filename encryption and unlimited cloud accounts and it worked well throughout (Windows PC etc) except for the iOS implementation lacked full integration causing me to hold off using filename encryption for every file as finding a file that has file name encryption without using Boxcryptor is an impossible task. I needed all applications including various email apps to be able to access the files and save to the encrypted drives in real time. This new integration is a huge step forward especially considering the support for my YubiKey’s to authenticate my accounts during setup.
Now we just need Face ID support in the Apple Files app to provide active biometric security upon opening or accessing it. Shame on Apple for being so slow to secure this doorway into everyone’s digital world. This is essential to maintain progressive security checks. There is a reason why a house has privacy looks on interior doors like your bathroom or bedroom. Locks on exterior doors as a sole solution are not enough.

### 5/5 — User

*2021-03-25, version 2.51*

Boxcryptor is an excellent app. I’m surprised by the free version being so good. You are very generous Boxcryptor. I will soon move to a paid subscription version of Boxcryptor as my need for security is growing. I think you, the Boxcryptor team, need to advertise more broadly as I’m sure many people don’t know of Boxcryptor’s existence.

### 5/5 — Simple, functional, free

*2020-02-04, version 2.45*

The installation is easy and all you need is to register online and you’re set. You can then do the same on your Mac, and all your files are encrypted on the go and sync through iCloud in almost real time between the 2 devices.
Files are decrypted as you open them for preview or sharing/copying as necessary.
If you don’t want to restrict access to the app by using your password/FaceId/TouchId, Spotlight can access the files/folders and index them for quick searches.
You can work locally on a single device if you want, and even if the company ceases to exist you can download the public keys used to encrypt your files from their server and continue to use/recover your files to move them to another encryption app/service.
Most of all is free for 2 devices, it is bug free and based on open source code.
If you need to sync among more devices there is a plan for private non commercial use that can satisfy most needs at a reasonable price.
This app is a keeper. Good job!

### 5/5 — Basically the best

*2020-02-04, version 2.45*

The Boxcryptor application on both Mac, windows and iPad is the best I have used. It is stable on the fly encryption. Only suggestion I have is the ability to increase the 4gb cache to as much as user wants.

### 5/5 — getting better with every release

*2019-06-19*

I’ve used this app on my iphone and ipad for more than a year. The first version was basic, with a few glitches, but with every new release it’s gets better every time. I recently reported a bug, although I’m not a paid customer, so not entitled to any support. They fixed the issue in the next release.

### 5/5 — Awesome way to secure your sensitive files

*2019-02-22, version 2.37*

This software is easy to use and allows you to safely store confidential information in your cloud storage of choice!
