I want to be able to know what is in each box and where it is stored. I am able to do that with ease with this app. The subscription has an unlimited option with a one-time payment which is exactly what I needed. The user interface is thoughtful and intuitive. I never felt equipped to start because the options coming to mind were not robust enough either in capability or experience. Boxes is pretty much line for line, bar for bar what I’ve wanted. Sorting items by spaces keeps things tidy, and boxes in spaces is perfect for keeping track of things during moves. I love adding custom options—they’ve been great to extend my organizing for clothes and media especially. The custom labels are awesome for making move organizing a physical matter as well as digitally. My desire features basically come down to extending the organizing. I’d like some way to interact more with items in boxes, not just the standalone items or boxes, like adding tags or bulk editing. I’d also like to edit list options while they’re assigned to something—I’ve had to manually shuffle things around when I realized an option I wrote wasn’t quite accurate. There’s probably some other ideas I’m missing, maybe even some long term ones, but as is, Boxes is already such a boon that these desire features aren’t a big deal on me. This app follows the process one would use to manually track possessions — obtain a container and list and/or include a photograph of its contents in a notebook or on a spreadsheet with a label on the container. With this app, you can sort and filter containers, affix smart tags, rename containers, create QR codes, associate NFC tags, move contents (reassign to a different container), print manifests and so much more. Great onboarding instructions to get you started. Extremely responsive developer. Aside from using this app to stage a move, I’ve inventoried a vacation home (my containers in this case are cabinets & drawers rather than boxes) to help me track what possessions are where. We knew there would be some challenges so we anticipated it taking about 30 days to get into the new house. I am one of those people who wants to know where things are to be able to find them quickly and easily so I downloaded this app. Turns out we didn’t get into the house we were trying to buy for 14 months. That mint, we ended up in an apartment for over a year the ability to go to storage and search for something was invaluable for example. Winter coats would be a good thing and we knew which box the winter coats were in! Love the ability to scan the label and see the contents as well as pictures and I’ll continue to use it to organize my shop and garage. I have not used it in a while and now discovered that it’s been extensively redesigned. I am unable to determine how to even print the label I need because there’s no instructions to understand how to use the features that they changed. Furthermore, not only do they want me to pay for using the app, they want to spy/track what I’m putting in the boxes. Tracking my contents is unacceptable. I will try to use it as little as possible now and will no longer include a picture of the contents. ### 1/5 — Update removed label size *2025-03-04, version 6.0* It was great until the update. I am in the middle of packing and now I have to enter all the details of a label that used to be in the system. If I could enter the Avery template number I wouldn’t mind, but I have to manually put in all the measurements. Despite this, I still have a few wishes: • It would be nice if I could group boxes into collections. All my Christmas boxes at a glance, some are stored in the basement, others in the attic. Now I have them spread across different spaces, with a collection it would be clearer. • It would be nice if you could assign the photo directly to the items in the box instead of throwing all the photos loosely into the box. It would also make it easier to find them again. • I would also like to be able to assign notes and tags to items. • It would also be nice if I could easily move items from one box to another. It’s silly. I just wanted a place to write down all the items. Deleted the app, I’ll just make a note in my phone. ### 1/5 — Lost all data when tried to convert account *2023-01-09, version 4.1* Used it anonymously at first (with 8 categories and printed labels for 20+ boxes) and then changed my phone and when went back into app it worked if pressed to use anonymously again. I decided to save all the info and hoped converting the account would migrate the existing boxes to the new account but alas it just deleted all my boxes with no way to recover + I paid for extra boxes and images the first time and it would not restore my purchases. Very odd. Would love to give it 5 stars but sadly that’s a huge floor if the only way to migrate your existing data is to email it yourself. ### 1/5 — Doesn’t work *2020-11-25, version 4.0.1* Cannot create an account. This is so slow. Similar apps let you just take pictures of items as you throw them in a box. Then you can go back and label them later. I downsized from a huge house to a smaller one and moved hundreds of miles and I never lost a single item. You think it’s a little fussy to take the extra time to list the items and take pics but it SAVES HOURS. ### 5/5 — Perfect for storage and moving *2026-08-17, version 8.1* I needed some long term storage while moving and temporarily downsizing, and quickly realized I was going to need a better system than just handwritten labels. There were several related apps, and I already had a couple inventory apps as well, but this one looked the best for both moving and general storage and also supports NFC tags. So I got myself a shipping container, plastic totes, a roll of NFC tags (these are only pennies now), and a roll of consecutively numbered inventory labels that I include in the tote name. All I need to do to quickly find an item is search for it in the app and then look for that numbered tote. Or, if I want to see everything in a tote without opening or digging through it, I can just scan the NFC tag and the app will open the tote for me with photos and descriptions of every item in it. You can have as much or as little detail on items as you want, make it as simple or advanced as you want (the numbered labels and NFC tags are entirely optional) and it’s extremely flexible for customization. I added some custom attributes (perishable, expiration date, color, liquid, etc.) and hid the ones I didn’t need (cost, warranty, etc.). What was originally an overwhelming task is now a very simple system that makes it very easy to find and organize an entire houseful of packed items. I also ended up buying the lifetime license because I knew I’d be using it well beyond 3 months for permanent garage and basement storage if nothing else. If you need the additional capacity beyond the free tier, it’s well worth the cost because it pays for itself in the time it saves you looking for items, and in not having to buy new items to replace the ones you know you have somewhere but can’t actually find when you need them right away! The developer was also very responsive to feature requests. ### 5/5 — Great app! Works as expected *2026-07-28, version 8.0* This is a great app that works as expect I’m able to organize all of my items into storage bins storage bins into storage locations, and storage locations into building buildings. Only issue I found is I’m unable to paste URL’s into the appropriate field ### 5/5 — A Must-Have for Moving and Staying Organized *2026-07-26, version 8.0* Moving is stressful, but Boxes made staying organized incredibly easy. Documenting everything is quick, and adding photos makes it simple to identify what’s inside each box. Searching for packed items later has been fast and reliable, saving us countless hours of digging through boxes. We printed labels with detailed contents, used the QR codes and NFC tags for instant access, and the whole system just worked. The best part is that we didn’t stop using it after the move. More than a year later, we’re still unpacking and continue to use Boxes to stay organized.
