Different states of mind are associated with specific brainwave frequencies that would be inaudible if played directly. These frequencies can be induced in the brain by playing two different tones into each ear (binaural tones), which after being processed by the brain, are perceived as an inaudible beat matching the target brainwave frequency. As you listen, your own brainwaves fall into step and synchronize with this frequency.

BrainWave uses low, mid, and high frequency ranges of Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma binaural tones combined in layers and stages to create powerful multi-stage experiences.

### 5/5 — These beats really work!

*2026-06-11, version 10.0.3*

I’m a university prof - I’ve been using these beats for over 5 yrs from pulling all-nighters and keeping my head clear with great ideas, to deep refreshing sleep, to deep moments of relaxation in a brief time span. I use the power nap several times a week...and I share all the beats with my family and everyone benefits. The interface is not the most up2date or aesthetically pleasing but the beats really work. Thank you Banzailabs. You folks rock! Dr Geoff.

### 5/5 — Great

*2026-06-06, version 10.0.3*

5 stars

### 3/5 — Works amazingly

*2026-05-06, version 10.0.3*

Deep focus, relaxation and mental shift are real. But there’s a noticeable crash afterward (strong rebound). So I would like to discuss with producers the possible after effects if used too often.

Best results come with moderation.

### 2/5 — Update!

*2026-05-03, version 10.0.3*

I’ve been a loyal Brainwave user for years, but it’s definitely time for a major update. Compared to other apps in this category, the interface feels old and outdated. Even basic things like saving favorite preferences are confusing and far from user-friendly—I’ve never been able to figure it out. This app has great content, but it desperately needs a modern UI and better usability. Please update it.

### 5/5 — GREAT for meditation and for using the Silva Mind Control Method

*2026-04-12, version 10.0.3*

Get this if you meditate or are a practitioner of the Silva Method of Mind Control. I use this app to go to the Alpha level (10Hz), or the Theta level (6Hz) and meditate with ease!
The nature sounds it comes with are awesome. It offers many other frequencies for increasing alertness and much more. Anyone who meditates will find it very useful and I highly recommend it!

### 5/5 — Great App - I've used for around a decade!

*2026-03-25, version 10.0.3*

I really like this app, I've had some many apps over the years but I keep using this one.

I find it beneficial, I especially like the "morning coffee", "espresso" "focused and alert" and "deep sleep" settings.

It can be used even if you are watching videos or doing other things on your phone.

One of the most valuable apps I've ever used on my iPhone!

### 5/5 — Only reputable binaural app

*2026-03-16, version 10.0.3*

I have quite literally tried all the binaural apps in the App Store, and this is the only one that isn’t a cash-grab subscription paywalled scam. Great variety of programs, options for ambiance and listening to your own background, pure tones and pre-created programs, no paywalls or subscriptions (beyond the initial app purchase). I highly recommend this app to anyone looking for a real binaural app.
My only criticism is the lack of updates to the repertoire. Would love some new focus/motivation options! But my review is still solidly 5-star.

### 4/5 — Purchase Bundle

*2026-02-24, version 10.0.3*

I do not recommend buying this app when you can get the bundle that includes the app for $5. I purchased both thinking it was not included in the bundle because it was cheaper. It was and they refused to refund my $6.99. Save yourselves the $7.

Update 2/23/26
I appreciate the developer taking the time to reach out and clarify things regarding pricing of apps and bundles. Hopefully, Apple can make this more clear going forward.

The app is useful especially when used in addition to neurofeedback sessions. It helps to further regulate the nervous system. Highly recommend.

### 2/5 — Purchase Bundle

*2026-02-20, version 10.0.3*

I do not recommend buying this app when you can get the bundle that includes the app for $5. I purchased both thinking it was not included in the bundle because it was cheaper. It was and they refused to refund my $6.99. Save yourselves the $7.

### 5/5 — So Very Happy I found this

*2026-01-26, version 10.0.3*

I use this app for everything from Calming Anxiety to Centering Myself with Meditation to Maintaining Concentration & Alertness. Absolutely Fantastic.

## Frequently asked questions about BrainWave

### What is binaural brainwave entrainment?

Binaural brainwave entrainment works by playing two slightly different tones into each ear. Your brain perceives these as a single, inaudible beat that matches a target brainwave frequency. By listening, your own brainwaves can synchronize with this frequency, helping you achieve specific mental states like focus or relaxation.

### What kind of programs does the app offer?

The app offers a wide range of multi-stage binaural programs designed for various purposes. These include programs for sleep, focus, memory enhancement, energy boosts, positive mood, anxiety and stress relief, relaxation, and meditation.

### Is this app free to use?

Yes, the app is completely free to use. There are no in-app purchases or subscriptions required to access its features and programs.

### Do I need headphones to use this app?

Yes, headphones or earbuds must be worn for the binaural tones to be effective. The binaural effect relies on presenting different frequencies to each ear separately, which is only possible with headphones.

### Can I use this app with other audio apps?

Yes, the app is designed to run alongside other audio applications. You can use it concurrently with apps like Spotify or audiobook readers, allowing you to combine binaural tones with your preferred background audio.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 10.0.3 — 2023-10-14

Thanks for making BrainWave the #1 Ranked Binaural App for 14 years! * One-time purchase with No Subscriptions or In-App Purchases * Targets 40 Hz with the "Gamma-40 Focus" program. * Headphones/Earbuds are required for Binaural Tones to be Effective. * This update includes UI improvements for iPad. The 10.0 update also includes several new settings as well as new binaural programs and background audio. * New version 10 options in General Settings, accessed by tapping the wrench-button on the main screen:
* Reduce Other App Volume - Option to enable audio ducking which instructs iOS to reduce the volume of other apps by 50% while this app is playing. iOS does not allow the volume reduction to be customized.
* Wave Amplitude Boost - Option to boost the amplitude of the binaural carrier waves by a fixed amount to provide an additional increase in volume. This option is provided as an on/off toggle setting.
* Carrier Signal (2 Options)- Option to switch between the default low-frequency binaural carrier wave and a medium carrier wave of ~250 Hz. This will not alter the frequency of the binaural tones. Example: A 1 Hz tone on a low-frequency carrier uses 121 Hz Left and 120 Hz Right, but with a Mid-carrier uses 221 Hz Left and 220 Hz Right.
* Option to export time spent listening to Relaxation and Meditation programs to the Apple Health App as Mindful Minutes.

* New Programs *
- Gamma-40 Focus
- Delta Slow-Wave Sleep

* New Backgrounds *
- Brown Noise
- White Noise
- Energy Flow
- Solar Waves

* Many people have asked which binaural program stimulates 40 Hz Gamma brainwaves after Stanford Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman recommended this app on his Huberman Lab podcast. The Gamma-40 Focus program in 'BrainWave™ - Advanced Binaural Programs' specifically targets 40 Hz gamma waves.

* Combine Brainwaves with Ambience and Another App by selecting background mode 'Ambience + Other App' * To use Another App for the Background Audio choose 'Other App'.
* When using background modes that allow other audio apps or iTunes Music to be playing Lockscreen controls will only affect iTunes or the other app.
* If the audio stops when the app is backgrounded or the screen locks please restart the device with a full shutdown as this is the result of low RAM memory which causes iOS to suspend background audio.

* How it Works *

During the entrainment process, two different carrier tones are played into the left and right ears. The frequency difference between these tones matches the brainwave frequency of the target state of mind. The listener will hear these carrier tones as an audible tone, however, when processing these two different tones the human brain will perceive the small frequency difference between the tones as an inaudible periodic beat. When exposed to this beat the listener's brainwaves will begin to synchronize with the beat frequency. What allows the human brain to perceive this beat is our directional hearing system, located in the brain stem. The brain's directional hearing system calculates frequency shifts between sound entering the left and right ear to quickly locate the direction of a sound, but when that difference is rhythmic, as with binaural tones, the brain synchronizes with the pattern. This process is more effective in the presence of background noise or ambience, which allows humans to hear and locate even subtle sounds.

As an example, the human ear can't directly perceive the .5 - 2 Hz Delta-wave frequencies associated with deep sleep because it is well below the human hearing range, but if you wear headphones or earbuds with one side playing a 135 Hz tone and the other playing a 136 Hz tone your brain will perceive the 1 Hz difference between those frequencies as a periodic beat, in this case matching a low delta wave frequency associated with sleep.

Warning: Do not use BrainWave while driving or operating machinery.
Note: If your vehicle Auto-Plays connected devices use the Ambience+Other background mode.
