Official support for it would still be nice because it can't go completely fullscreen and whatnot. ### 5/5 — Wonderful, relaxing, hypnotic and immersive *2020-04-14, version 1.3* I never buy apps, but have enjoyed Brian Eno for years from Music for Airports, Discreet Music and more recent work. The app does not loop but explores similar sounds and themes in a relaxing and gentle way. I use this almost daily for meditation listening on bose headphones and find it the perfect way to escape and recharge. From the number of times (hours) listened it’s cost me less than a penny or two. My only regret is that it won’t play over my Sonos set, though the intimacy of the experience would be diminished. ### 4/5 — Not much for the price *2020-02-09, version 1.3* While I appreciate that this was suppose to be an artistic expression, and I usually blame myself for being duped into spending too money on something with little value, I feel a little blindsided by this app. Judging by the interactive experiences provided by previously released apps, I was expecting much the same here and was left completely wanting. The listener has no control whatsoever of the listening experience. Art, yes, I get it, but I could have easily put this piece on loop for free in Apple Music and not known the difference. My ear is apparently not discerning enough to care if there are subtle changes in the composition. Also, the “space frequencies” are absolute nails on a chalk board. I’m likely going to delete this app because I can’t stand them. UPDATE: While I’m still going to caution all comers about the price and warn them about the lack of interactivity, I’m here to admit that I have NOT deleted the app from my phone after all and have spent the last two weeks listening to it for most of my work day. It really is oddly addictive and very comforting. I’ve also found that paired with a nature sound such as rain or wind it makes an excellent study/focus tool that also blocks out background noise. I’ve even gotten accustomed to the “space frequency” sounds that have actually served to draw my attention back to the music and refocus me when I start to drift. ### 5/5 — Seasons? *2019-09-27, version 1.3* I am enjoying this app quite a bit, but unsure of when the seasons switch. I'm listening to it now. It does not lose interest in repetition but gains strength as it burrows deeper in time. ### 3/5 — Reflections on Reflection *2019-05-04* After decades of listening to Brian Eno’s ambient music, it is now fused with my DNA. It is always somewhere in my life every day. However, what I truly love and miss this time around - with Reflection - is a tiny bit of emotion here and there in the music, whether it is a slow withering texture or a slight chord change, a wash or something barely there. I do find the sound ingredients of Reflection to be a little limited, recognisable and mechanical. I find myself listening to LUX a lot more. I think it would be great if Brian added some new tints and textures here and there with each seasonal update to lend a little more feeling. I want this to be his best creation so badly! Awesome 🙌🏼 ### 5/5 — a great artwork... *2019-01-30* ...not just an app. This makes no pretence of “interactivity” Instead it generates a constantly evolving composition, which is certain to be enjoyed by people who enjoyed the ‘Music for Installations’ album or the eponymous one you can hear on Spotify. If you want a new version of those every time you listen, then this app is for you. The price seems steep by comparison to many apps, but they don’t have infinite boundaries. And if you’ve ever paid thirty quid (or more) to see an electronica artist ‘play’ music off their laptop, then imagine if that ticket got you the artist playing forever in your own home... ### 5/5 — supercalifragilisticexpialidocious *2019-01-16* Reflection by Brian Eno is the coolest endless evolutionary composition of my collection of music app. As a UU theologian, His sounds not only helps me to concentrate and make me high during interfaithful sacred scriptures reading, but playing on channel one, you can feature yourself playing alongside with Brian using NodeBeat or FL Studio on iPhone’s or iPad’s channel two. I am running it on Apple TV 4K. Audio was a little tricky for had to tweak it from only running through TV speakers and not my Apple Homepods. I run my Homepods pairing 2 speakers for stereo playback and sound is only coming out 1. It’s a spacious playback but not as dimensional as hoped, as say playback via headphones. Be nice to upgrade app to have more control of audio stereo output. If anyone knows a fix, please feel free to share. ### 5/5 — Sonic Architecture *2018-12-15, version 1.3* I have been going back and forth for the longest time whether to buy this since I have the CD. So today I decided to buy this, and after 3 hours, I have no regrets. I agree with the other reviewers - I would not call this an app. Between the music and visuals it’s more like sonic architecture. I really hope Eno and Chilvers do more of these. ### 5/5 — My new music player *2018-12-02, version 1.3* After playing trope and reflection, I end up using them more than I do my music subscription services. With the ever changing generative reflection, I don’t even have to press a button and I always have some new ambient going. Occasionally I hear a sample repeat from time to time, but never the same music and the moods are always changing. With trope I have to start over the track because it isn’t ever-changing. With reflection you can hear it’s always bringing in new sounds. I have a large ambient collection in my iTunes library but I always end up back to this app. Thank you Brian eno for pushing the boundaries of iPhone ### 5/5 — A rarefied experience *2018-11-24, version 1.3* This “thing” (i.e. I shan’t call it a mere App) returns one to one’s quiet center. If there’s anything more important than that, I haven’t yet discovered it in my 62 years here. Is it worth the $’s? Is there anything else one values more than slipping away from the perceptual world? This one is not interactive like the others, but it is the one that is actually worth listening to. There is also an “album” version of this available on iTunes. It’s essentially a CD’s length recording of this app playing. You can buy the album at a lower cost than the app. If you have an Apple Music subscription, you can just listen to the album for free. The difference is the recording is the same every time, while the app is more organic and never the same, though the vibe is pretty much the same as the album version. If you want the organic experience, get the app. If you just want an hour of the same ambient song every time you listen to it, get the album. Bottom line, this is really great meditative and relaxing ambient music. I find it very fitting for before bedtime stretching and chill out. The only negative thing I have to say about this app is the visuals displayed during the music are pretty bad. But, thankfully, it lets you continue play in the background so you can look at whatever you like. Here’s what’s very cool about this app (and album): you can play it on multiple devices at the same time throughout your home, or even in the same room, and regardless of when you start the app on each device, it blends in perfectly with with the sounds coming from the other device. Try it. Simply amazing. I’ll have it on the Apple TV in the living room, my Bluetooth speaker in the bedroom, and even right from the speakers on my phone in the bathroom, and they are all playing totally independently, with totally different variations of the music generated by the app, but yet they all completely blend together musically from room to room. And even in the same room, every instance you have of the app running, say on your iPad and on your phone at the same time, the sounds from one device layer perfectly upon the other to add to the overall song. Lastly, if you’re looking for other good ambient music apps, try Moodscaper (as well as Pianoscaper and Guitarscaper from the same developer), and the album-app from the group Loscil called “Adrift”. The ‘scaper apps can be more interactive than Eno’s Reflection, but also good, organic passive listening. The Loscil app is more like the Eno app in that it’s just an endless, organic form of one of their albums. Though their app has multiple tracks instead of just the one this Eno app has. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Sorry Geht gar nicht *2026-06-13* Für eine App die 35 Euro kostet erwarte ich persönlich mehr. Attendre le printemps ? Quels sont les paramètres qui permettent de changer de thème et d’instruments: le temps,le gps,la météo ? Il n’y a rien de génératif c’est un disque rayé.Scape était si profond que cette réflection est une mascarade à coté ,et une mascarade à 30 euros s’il vous plaît !!! ### 2/5 — Buy Scape instead of Reflections *2017-12-06, version 1.3* "Reflection" is nothing more than an extended version of the Brian Eno's "Reflection" album on CD. You can play it day and night. Maybe the music really evolves but it is hard to say because the selection of available sounds remains the same. If you have a CD version, put on a loop and the result will be pretty much the same. If you like soundscapes and you have "Scape", also by Brian Eno, do not bother buying " Reflection". If you do not have "Scape" - buy it. You can create as good the scapes as "Reflection" or better, and you have a sense of achieving something with your own input. In "Reflection" you can do nothing by yourself. ### 2/5 — Disappointed *2017-04-29* Sigh I thought there would be something we could play with and make our own music. ### 2/5 — Not worthy of the generative treatment *2017-02-04, version 1.0.3* The composition itself is ok, nothing spectacular compared to other works. There just simply aren't enough elements to the track to justify making this a 'generative' experience. The high frequency resonance is particulary grating when the engine decides to play it multiple times very close together. Same for the 'classic Eno' fade-in synth note. I knew going in that Reflections is not interactive a la Scape, but the latter was much more exciting and promising due to an excellent variety of moods and textures. In sum, not a varied enough composition to be a showcase for generative music. ### 2/5 — L'app Apple TV ne fonctionne pas *2017-01-23* Belle promesse mais qui n'est pas tenue. À éviter ### 2/5 — Meh *2017-01-17, version 1.0* It's hard to believe I would rate an Eno app this low, but Reflection has been a disappointment. First, it isn't one of his strongest pieces. Second, the generative aspects are quite uninteresting. Why no textural development? Everything is the same forever. The visuals are similarly uninteresting. There is no interactivity. For $5, this would be an ok value, but $40 is just too much. ### 3/5 — Great song but app needs fixing *2024-05-09, version 1.3.1* I experience an issue with the app when listening is interrupted by any notification then it pauses automatically but does not start where it left off upon playing, forcing me to restart the song each time I get a notification, causing the app to lose its purpose in playing an ongoing iterative track. This is disappointing since everything else about it is great. ### 3/5 — Almost amazing. *2021-09-09, version 1.3* I want to love this but there’s a super shrill (12,000+hz tone- like someone standing next to you screaming Eeeeeeeeeeee) that has been introduced into the generative mix. It is ear splitting and so painful and really destroys the joy of what could be. I’m hoping it’s something that’s just part of summer, if it’s sticking around in the fall, I guess it’s time to delete this. Really sad. ### 3/5 — Season Choices? *2020-11-13, version 1.3* It’s a fantastic ambient music composition, and ranks among Eno’s best ambient work. But for the price, at the very least we should be able to choose between the seasons. I got it recently and therefore have “Autumn”. I would very much like to hear or see the differences in the other seasons, but they appear to be previous versions, no longer available in the app. Would the developer consider allowing the old seasons to still be chosen within the app? Runs well on M3 iMAC. OS 15.3.1. The app has a message suggesting to use external speakers or headphones. I have not listened on either speakers or headphones yet, but have found using the M3’s internal speakers with Boom (calibrated to the M3), with ‘Ambience’ feature engaged (up to about 6/ 1 0’clock) to work quite well with the ambient nature of this piece. Have been a huge fan of Brian Eno, have ‘Reflection’ on CD, and I learned about the generative version a while back, shortly after it was released in 2017. Provides an excellent relaxing, yet interesting background while using the M3. Generally I find the M3 iMac speaker/ audio system lacking compared to modest powered speakers or a decent pair of earbuds or headphones. I have noticed that the iMac built-in speakers sound better if it is positioned away from a wall or flat surface ### 5/5 — Amazing. *2024-09-17* Amazing generative music app. Had this from its launch on the iPhone / iPad and not usable wonderfully on the Mac. I still use this for sleeping and when I need a bit of salt generative music. Tras estar en su exposición de Barcelona de hace unos años, comencé a comprender más su música ilimitada, su concepción sonora del tiempo — ¿o sería su concepción temporal del sonido?— que rompe con las convenciones. Aunque ya hay experimentos sobre ello, creo que el siguiente paso que debería dar Brian Eno sería que esa sonoridad variase según quien la escuchara (hay apps que lo hacen según el lugar, la hora del día o las constantes vitales que llegan a través de los relojes interactivos). ### 5/5 — The falling asleep app I’ve settled on *2021-03-04, version 1.3* I enjoy falling asleep to white noise, music, etc., And I have tried a lot of apps with good success on quite a few. I balked at the price for this one at first, but it has become the one that never gets old for me. I really hope that they Will make it available as an Apple Watch app so I can use it even when my phone isn’t nearby. ### 5/5 — Money well spent. *2020-12-03* I was a little apprehensive at first dropping £30 on this app but I had used other Brian Eno / Peter Chilvers apps before and they were great and importantly updated over time to keep them working with IOS updates etc. I still use Bloom a lot for creating hypnotic patterns. Listening to Bloom is good, but this app feels so much more sophisticated as a music generator. It really feels like someone is there making the music! Perfect for listening anytime of the day and wonderful to sleep to. I often play Sounds of the Lid to drift off to sleep but this app has recently taken their place. Ambient music on tap! Money well spent. UPDATE: One small annoyance I've found from using the app over time is the timer controls are too close to the bottom of the screen and are very difficult to control. Not sure if this is just because I'm on an iPhone 11pro. They just need lifting further up into the screen as there is plenty of free space. Still an amazing app that I use almost every day! UPDATE 2: Still using the app pretty much every day! Been a life saver for relaxing during the past year of craziness! ### 5/5 — Wunderbar *2020-06-30* Dies ist ein wunderbares Werk. Sicherlich erschreckt der hohe Preis, zumal die vergleichbare App von Jarre mit Namen Eōn preiswerter ist, obwohl sie auch ein akustisches Perpetuum mobile zu sein scheint. Jetzt fehlt nur eine solche App von Vangelis und Klaus Schulze und wir können endlos im Elysium der Klänge verweilen. Ich mische diese App mit den Naturklängen von Lang Elliott’s Pure Nature und bin im himmlischen Zaubergarten. Eine herrliche ewige Indtallation wie ein akustischer Bachlauf.
