But I found I wanted to look at the two 2020 issues which didn't appear in print and ... it's surprisingly OK! I'd rather look at photographs on paper, but the iPad experience is mostly fine. ### 2/5 — Annual Subscription not recognised. *2021-03-16, version 2.3.2* I have a new issue as of January with both iPad and iPhone apps now not recognising a subscription which runs to August 2021. Neither Apple nor BJP/1854 Media accept any responsibility. I wouldn’t buy a subscription again...... ### 2/5 — I just want to read the mag! *2020-07-01, version 2.3.2* Constantly messing up and requiring a reinstall. Embarrassingly poor app. ### 2/5 — Unstable *2020-05-13, version 2.3.2* The content is great but the app keeps crashing and constantly needs reinstalling. It also needs a function that allows you to remove downloaded issues. ### 2/5 — Visually pleasing, with issues *2020-03-31, version 2.3.2* Visually excellent with first class content, and the interface is basic but fine. Issues: 1) Most pages cannot be zoomed in. This is a problem for a photography magazine as sometimes we want to see detail, especially on smaller devices. 2) When exiting the app and returning, you return to the beginning not where you left off. 3) There doesn't seem to be a way to delete old editions to free space. 3) I've noticed that when a few editions have been downloaded the app crashes, scrambling the iPad pro's search screen and affecting the keyboard. This has happened twice and it seems it's the app. These points aside, the content is excellent and the app, thus, recommended. EDIT: have had to reduce the rating as this app crashes often - it doesn’t open, you have to reinstall it for it function, then it occurs again a few days later. It appears unstable. What a shame. ### 1/5 — Disappointed *2019-06-11, version 2.3.2* Great magazine but terrible app. Keeps crashing and fails to recognise me as a subscriber. ### 1/5 — Landscape format images do not display acceptably *2019-03-25, version 2.3.2* Unfortunately, the iPad app can neither rotate nor zoom images. This means that landscape images have to be viewed in ‘segments’ dragging from page to page. Mark Power’s images in the April 2019 edition are pretty much unviewable. Disappointing. ### 3/5 — Read terms before subscribing *2019-03-06* The iPad and iPhone editions are completely separate subscriptions. Paying for one will get you nowhere on the other. The support staff have been helpful and charming but the subscription part of the app is hugely unstable. The app now wants me to pay for each issue. There is no support on the website. ### 3/5 — Da migliorare *2018-08-21, version 2.3.0* Su un IPad bello grande non è male, perché permette una buona visione. Purtroppo la app non ruota le immagini e non consente lo zoom, il che la rende probabilmente un incubo su un IPhone. La app è gratuita ma per vederci qualcosa ci vuole un abbonamento alla rivista, oppure si pagano cifre esose per l’equivalente immateriale delle loro pubblicazioni. La rivista on Line (ho preso un abbonamento scontato!) ha tanti contenuti ma causa i due difetti descritti non ti consente di vedere bene le foto orizzontali (lo schermo non ruota!) Quando sono "a doppia pagina" si è costretti a scorrere la foto vedendone solo una porzione. Altre foto orizzontali invece prendono solo una parte dello schermo. immaginate come deve essere divertente vederle su uno schermo 16:9 in verticale sfruttando solo il terzo superiore. C’è anche una parte di contenuti online, e poi le pagine della rivista si copiano sull’IPad, e almeno lì le puoi zoomare. Ma le foto a doppia pagina, quelle proprio no, intere non le potete vedere ### 1/5 — Unwanted and useless *2018-07-28, version 2.2.0* After being given an unwanted subscription as a gift (magazine still in wrapper after delivery and will remain so and then go into recycling) I get an email offering me free digital edition. I think “oh well I will have a look at it online, even if it confirms what I think of the publication already.” But sadly after getting the app and logging in to it, it only offers paying options and no other option despite saying I have a subscription. Uninstalling shortly, wish I could bill for the wasted minutes of my life. ### 1/5 — No facility for password recovery *2018-06-24, version 2.2.0* App looks great on iPad but you are in trouble if you forget your password as there is no facility to recover. As a result you cannot easily unsubscribe! ### 1/5 — Avoid. Fraudulent operation. *2018-02-11, version 2.2.0* Do not go anywhere near the British Journal of Photography. You'll pay for nothing. ### 1/5 — Appalling app *2017-12-25, version 2.2.0* BJOP is a wonderful publication, the app is the exact opposite. Cannot even login despite numerous attempts to reset password, very disappointing. ### 3/5 — Still no landscape view *2017-10-10, version 2.2.0* The last review to mention this is now a year old, but there is still no facility to rotate the app to landscape view, neither is there the ability to zoom. This is madness, as the content is superb and I want to see more than a tiny thumbnail image. The app also appears not to support dynamic text sizing so we are stuck with the rather small font, which I struggle to read on the iPhone screen. This really should be fixed as the app could be an otherwise excellent add-on to the print subscription. I won’t be buying the iPhone subs for the time-being. ### 1/5 — Fraud. Subscribe to print edition *2017-08-06* I had a similar experience as the other reviewer. Was not able to access full issues despite paying $60+. Many attempts to reach BJP and Apple with one unhelpful response from BJP (nothing to do with us) and zero from iTunes/Apple. Recently, despite the subscription, I have somehow downloaded Jan/Feb and was charged for it. I have had issues like this before. Also, the pagination does not flow. Поддержка твердит одно и то же, без результата. ### 1/5 — Disgraceful *2020-06-26, version 2.3.2* I am fuming about this as they advertised access for just £1, supposedly to help us all out during Covid-19, but do not make it clear that they will then charge you the full price after 3 months. It’s disgraceful, with no obvious way to cancel access from within the app or via the website. I cannot recommend, especially given the appalling quality of half the photos in the magazine and the pretentiousness of the copy. Furious! ### 1/5 — Ask to pay on top of subscription *2020-05-29, version 2.3.2* During the difficult times of the pandemic, the publishers have been providing so called ‘free’ digital issues to print subscribers in lieu of printed copies. You are told to create an account, and use this app to access the issues. However, after repeated attempts, the app will not accept my username and password. Advice from support was to ‘register’ my email and reset my password. I have done this several times. I can access my account details online, so the accounts works, but not the content of this app. I could read the copies if I pay the cover price on top of my subscription, but I refuse to do this. Judging by some other reviews, this refusal to accept login details is a common issue. All the features seem flawless. The magazine is, of course, a classic so you can't miss by subscribing. The store was a bit confusing but, in the end, I prevailed. It seems there is a trend to publish plain PDF files in bad wrapper apps and call it an ePaper. Though font scaling would be nice, this is an interactive paper with a number of features that optimize the reading experience for tablets.
