### 2/5 — Difficult to select the correct answers to questions asked

*2025-06-09, version 3.3*

I have tried using both bark and leaf identification. However, I cannot find the right choice of answer to each question. Even with trees I know, entering answers I perceive as correct, leads me to the wrong tree! I have failed on many occasions to get the correct answers for Ash, and I know I am trying to “identify “ an Ash tree.

### 2/5 — Useless for identifying a tree

*2025-05-11, version 3.3*

Interesting information about the trees in its inventory, but absolutely useless for actively trying to identify one. Can’t upload photos and the prompts I answered somehow yielded a result of ‘monkey puzzle tree’ - the leaf is rounded and alternate in the stem, in no way spiky! How the app came to that conclusion, I have no idea.

### 3/5 — Patchy results

*2025-01-16, version 3.2.1*

I’ve tried on numerous trees that I already know and it’s as likely to suggest holly in place of beech. Disappointing

### 4/5 — Great app

*2024-09-12, version 3.2.1*

This app is almost exactly what I was looking for ! Really appreciate that it works offline and that the descriptions are so clear and informative. Would like clearer images of the tree profile, maybe an illustration ? And a ‘snap’ like game or something similar so I can practice remembering which trees have which features !
Thanks for the great app and all the work the charity does :))

### 4/5 — Saved trees disappeared

*2024-04-09, version 3.2.1*

Lovely app! Although I’m gutted to see the trees I saved yesterday are no longer there.

Also, it would be nice if the app allowed you to save more than 1 picture of a tree. I would have liked to take one of the tree it’s self and the leaves to refer back to.

As someone in the beginning stages of identifying trees, this app has been really useful.

### 4/5 — Nice informative app

*2023-06-17, version 3.2*

Lovely informative app and although sometimes the identification can be off - the information provided about the trees is excellent and you can normally get what you need. What I’d also love in the series of pictures that you get with the trees is a black and white profile - sometimes you can get a lot from a profile of a tree. I make models and although pictures are great it’s nice to understand the branch structure. Enjoy using!

### 2/5 — Every Tree is a Monkey Puzzle

*2022-11-10, version 3.2*

Same as other reviews, I entered the details of known trees. Weeping willow is a……..monkey puzzle! Lost confidence in the app.
Shame.

### 4/5 — Very helpful!!

*2021-04-25, version 3.1*

This app has helped me identify so many trees!! It’s simple and accurate,I gave it 4 stars because most of the trees look different to the pictures but it’s still a great app!

### 2/5 — Good for identifying trees but privacy concern

*2021-03-29, version 3.1*

I’ve seen “app has pasted from messages” iOS notification more than once whilst using this app. I hope this is a bug that will be fixed and not something more sinister as I’d like to be able to review more highly; it’s quite good for the tree identification.

### 3/5 — Fails to ‘save’ your trees

*2020-12-27, version 3.1*

I like this app and appreciate the work that has gone into it for a free app. However, unfortunately the ‘save your tree’ function, which should allow users to record on the map tress they identify does not work. ‘My saved trees’ is still zero despite having saved numerous specimens to the map.

### 2/5 — Nice layout and info but failed to ID trees

*2020-06-09, version 3.1*

I really wanted this app to be great given it’s from Woodland Trust. Plus points are layout and ease of use. But when I went through the various questions to ID a few trees, the results I either knew were wrong or looked nothing like the tree in front of me. Maybe I’m on a different wavelength to whoever designed the question process. Deleted the app immediately. Shame.

### 4/5 — Good but flawed.

*2020-05-04, version 3.1*

I seem to have had the same problem as another reviewer. I went through the questions about leaf shape, size, bark etc. I was then informed that it was a monkey puzzle!
The last monkey puzzle I saw was 40 years ago in Scotland. Since then, walking all over Buckinghamshire I have never ever seen a single monkey puzzle.
As an app it has a good selection of photos.

### 3/5 — Not designed for iPads!! No Landscape View.

*2019-11-14, version 3.0.1*

The information in this app is great, easy to read and detailed. I would give it a 5, but on my iPad it only opens in portrait mode, zoomed out and its going back to the bad old days when developers only designed apps for phones.
Extremely frustrating, so my plea to the Woodland Trust is make this compatible for iPads in landscape mode please.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Free but useless

*2025-05-07, version 3.3*

Did not work on my iPhone. Also it seems it does not use any smart phone features it’s just a lookup. I tried it on one tree it came up with 77 types of leaves. How are you supposed to go through them?

### 1/5 — crazy

*2023-05-13, version 3.2*

I got the app and tested it out
on a tree I know. It came up with compelety different answers including a monkey tree when it didn't look like one.

### 1/5 — Don’t bother - what a disappointing app

*2023-04-09, version 3.2*

OK, this negates having a heavy book in your pocket but that’s where its usefulness ends. The inability to upload photos of leaves, branches, blossom or buds in order to identify trees is beyond disappointing. I was sent a photo from a friend and used Plant Net to name the tree in seconds. This app is stuck in the pre-internet age of identification. Fine if you wish to teach time-consuming, walk-interrupting observational skills but poor if you wish to awaken and build on interest in nature.

### 1/5 — Useless

*2022-10-07, version 3.2*

I’ve had this app a while now and I’ve not been able to successfully identify a single tree. Common species like oak and chesnut I already know so I’ve only used it for slightly more obscure trees. You’ll select all the best matching features and then at the end you get given a few species of tree that you can tell visibly from the photos are nothing like the one you’re looking at. Most common trees can be learnt from watching a quick youtube video so I don’t really see the use of this app if you can’t use it to identify more obscure species.

### 1/5 — Un helpful

*2021-06-12, version 3.1.1*

This game is bad . We have been trying to match are leaf up but this does NOT help u . The pics looked NOTHING like are leaf so do not recommend this app

Thank u for reading this
Do not download this !!!!!!!!!!

### 1/5 — Frustratingly never identifies

*2021-03-29, version 3.1*

Not easy to complete, hasn’t successfully identified a tree once. Frustrating and expected better.

### 1/5 — Still no idea what tree it is

*2020-06-30, version 3.1*

Maybe I’m just not using it properly but I’ve never actually successfully identified a tree with this app. Surely one where you photograph the leaf would be better? I can do this with wine but not trees!

### 1/5 — Identifying trees

*2020-06-09, version 3.1*

Thought I would give it a go on a small tree that I planted in the garden
The app identified the tree (nomatter what options I chose) as a Eucalyptus tree when it was a walnut!
I thought that by choosing bark and leaf criteria it would be quite simple to identify . Will try others to see if this is a one off

### 1/5 — Lame

*2020-05-03, version 3.1*

I want to point the camera and the app tell me. It doesn’t, so deleted.

### 1/5 — Oak, hazel or walnut ... no idea

*2019-12-06, version 3.1*

Based on using the seeds/fruit of a tree this app couldn’t distinguish between an acorn, hazel nut or walnut.

And it only works in portrait format.

Not much use at all.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Monkey Puzzle Tree

*2021-05-03, version 3.1*

Just to let u know there are a lot of Monkey Puzzle trees in Leighton Buzzard Bedfordshire off Plantation road

### 5/5 — Woodlands Trust British Trees app

*2020-05-09, version 3.1*

I have only had the app installed today and I’ve spent hours already just reading all the amazing facts and learning how to identify different types of trees, and also learning a lot of botanical stuff too!
There’s also a map where you can add different types of trees that you’ve discovered around you and even see other peoples tree discoveries in any area, you can also press onto the map discoveries to learn more about that specific tree!
I mean I’ve never really been very clued up when it comes to trees but this app has made learning about trees so much fun,I absolutely love it and will be using it regularly now, can’t wait to log my first tree identification discovery!
So glad I downloaded this app.
And the best part is that it’s made by the amazing awe inspiring Woodlands Trust, who you can easily make a donation to from the app to help them continue with their amazing work!
I definitely recommend this app honestly and wholeheartedly!

### 5/5 — An AMAZING app

*2020-04-24, version 3.1*

To me this is a very luck find an app of this quality for free is exceptionally rare. It is one of my favourite apps and is incredibly useful with features like reliable tree identification and a-z trees of the uk.
Overall, this is one of the best apps out there for free!

### 5/5 — Really useful!

### 5/5 — Noice

*2020-04-17, version 3.1*

### 5/5 — Excellent tree identification

*2018-11-20, version 3.0*

This app is excellent for identifying trees from the leaves, branches and bark. We are bulging an extension and this app enabled us to identify a tree that the structural engineer was concerned about.

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2018-11-02*

Found the tree I want to ID straight away!
