## What is Buchen?

Buchen (pronounced like bookin’) is a simple bookmark manger that allows you to manage your bookmarks for multiple browsers, tags, and folders.

Some of the feature of the app include:

- Tag your bookmarks with an interface that allows you to easily add new tags and suggest existing ones.

- Organise your bookmarks in folders. Folders can have as many sub-folders as you need to organise your bookmarks.

- Pin your bookmarks, tags or folders

- Add notes to your bookmarks.

-  Import / Export bookmarks as JSON or HTML. When the optional fields added date, tags, or notes are available in either import format, Buchen will use those too.

- Shortcuts for adding bookmarks or searching bookmarks.

-  An “Add Bookmark” action for the Share Sheet. This allows you to add bookmarks directly from Safari and other apps.

- A variety of keyboard shortcuts for iPad users.

-  Create QR Codes in a variety of colours for your bookmarks. You can view or share the QR Code from the bookmark detail view or with a left swipe / long-press on a bookmark.

 - Choose between different bookmark styles. You can choose different styles in the Bookmarks and Tags sections.

- When you choose a bookmark style that shows its tags, you can navigate to that tag from any bookmark.

- Choose from multiple colors to style the app and widgets.

- Select which browser will open your bookmark. Note: Browsers other than Safari are only an option if they’re installed on the device. Read the help for the list of compatible browsers.

-  Lock Buchen with Face ID / Touch ID / Passcode. Either fully lock it down or enjoy some convenience and allow widgets and shortcuts to show your data.

- Search your bookmarks against their name, URL, notes, browser, tags or even creation date (YY-MM-DD format).

Buchen also comes with Widgets in all 4 sizes. Medium, Large and Extra Large widgets let you open links from the Widget.

Add lock screen widgets for easy access to bookmarks, tags, and folders.

Importing bookmarks can use the Buchen JSON format, Firefox JSON backup files or standard bookmark HTML files.

Exporting bookmarks can use the Buchen JSON format or the standard bookmark HTML format.

Notes from HTML imports require using the Delicious / Pinboard HTML format.

I despise dates on folders and anywhere I don't put them. Unusable for my use case because of this. Disappointing because the app looked like it would be perfect otherwise.

Honestly it's a very good app but need new update with function to automatically get title from website when you want to save a bookmark from Share Sheet. No one wants to do it manually all the time.

Excellent app with a pretty UI and intuitive, pleasant workflow. Kudos to the developer for not infecting the app with analytics or telemetry trash. I would like to pay for such exquisite little gem, but see no option? Very pleased with the application, thankful it exists.

After updating to the latest version of iOS today all of my bookmarks are gone. Fortunately I had exported a back up that I was able to restore. But now every time my phone is rebooted the Bookmarks disappear again.

**Developer response:** Sorry to hear that happened. I've not heard of that happening so if you could contact me via support, I'd be very interested into trying to figure out this problem.

This has finally broken my bad habit of MMS'ing URLS to myself to read later. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the Mac version of the app automatically (as in, no configuration required at all) picked up the URLs I'd bookmarked on my phone. 

One thing that'd be great to see is some intelligent (i.e. automatic) tagging suggestions when bookmarking. If a set of "suggested" tags could be displayed for the user, and perhaps filtered to match tags that the user has already generated? And a similar feature for bookmarks would be handy too.

Great work, and nicely done.

### 2026.01 — 2026-05-25

- Add / Edit bookmark has a new option for removing common trackers.

- The options to get the bookmark's name from the URL, prepending HTTPs to a URL and removing trackers is now in the navigation menu.

- Improvements for the share sheet extension for getting the name of the web page.

- macOS: removed browser section from Add / Edit Bookmark views. Currently multiple browser support is not supported on on macOS.

- The QR Code image on the bookmark detail view is now draggable to other apps.

- Deleting a tag or folder has two options now. You can just delete the tag / folder or delete it along with all of its contents. When deleting a folder and not it's contents, everything is move to the parent folder.

- On the initial Folder listing, searching for folders will now search all folders rather than filtering the list of root folders.

- Added a share option for tags and folders. This will provide all the bookmarks in the tag / folder.

- Tag / Folder listings now use lists instead of a grid.

- Tag / Folder listings have swipe actions for pinning, editing and deleting.

- The add / edit bookmark views make better use of space.

- There is now a macOS specific version of the app. Note: If you used the 'Designed for iPad' version. You may need to uninstall that first.

- Bug Fixes.

### 2025.04 — 2025-10-08

- You can pick any color for the app's tint color. See Settings -> General Settings.
  The old preset colors can still be selected and your existing color choice will still be used until you choose to change it.
  
- You can now pin bookmarks, tags and folders. Exports and imports in the Buchen JSON format support pinned items.

- Keyboard shortcuts for the new pin actions.

### 2025.03 — 2025-09-15

- The tab bar can now be displayed as a sidebar and customized on platforms that support these features

- Bookmark metadata cache will now refresh at a configured interval. See Settings -> General Settings to configure the cache refresh interval

- Scrolling lists will minimize the tab bar on platforms that support this feature

- New default icon that will adapt well to light, dark, clear and tinted customizations

- Widgets support clear and tinted views

- Widgets are now available on all supporting platforms

### 2025.02 — 2025-06-16

- You can now choose between open and copy URL when tapping on bookmarks. This new setting is in Settings > General

- There is now one 'Rich Link' style that can display the bookmark image or favicon. It also provides access to the folder, tags and notes.

- The bookmark detail view's header now resemble the 'Rich Link' style. This gives access to the folder and tags whether you are viewing the bookmark's notes or QR Code.
