## What is Buoyancy Calc?

Quickly find out the suggested weight you should add when scuba diving in different environments. Based on PADI's Peak Performance Buoyancy basic weighting guideline*. Enter your weight in pounds or kilograms, and additionally set the type of water, tank, and exposure suit to dial in a suggested amount of weight to help keep you neutrally buoyant.

*Note that this app and the developer are not officially a representative of PADI. This app will give the user a good estimate of the weight needed for the environment selected, but there are always adjustments needed to achieve peak performance, based on gender, physique, exposure suit age, accessories, etc.

## Key features

- Calculate suggested diving weight
- Adjust for water type
- Adjust for tank type
- Adjust for exposure suit
- Supports pounds and kilograms

### 3/5 — A little off

*2025-03-23, version 1.3*

The app recommends 28 pounds based off of my standard setup but I dive with 24. Still though I would say this seems to give a decent estimate.

### 4/5 — Could be better but good

*2023-11-07, version 1.3*

Of course I see everything that says it over weighs, this is just a suggestion that I would like. The ability to not include the tank in the calculations for free diving because 7mm suits can be quite buoyant and may they need some weighing down, it may also be helpful for snorkeling

### 2/5 — Possibly Good

*2023-02-10, version 1.3*

This app is super simple to use, very intuitive.
It does however not match what I use (or others I checked with), weight wise.
Also, it appears to not correctly convert between pounds and kg.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work anymore

*2023-01-21, version 1.3*

Used this for multi-mode buoyancy calculations as a ball-park estimation, mostly for vacation when diving in different configurations. Worked well for that application, but App doesn’t work anymore. Deleting.

### 1/5 — Totally inaccurate

*2022-08-22, version 1.3*

I’m a DM with 40 years experience i dive with 22 lbs the app Calc my required weight at 34lbs.

### 3/5 — Ballpark Calculator

*2022-07-24, version 1.3*

Not bad as it will get you somewhere near your required weight. I’ve used this as a weight estimator for my students and it always overweights them sometimes by a significant amount. Once you get used to it you’ll start to come up with a fudge factor that works for you. Once you know what your fudge factor is properly weighting yourself when changing tanks, exposure suits and environment becomes a snap.

### 2/5 — Not safe

*2022-04-10, version 1.3*

The weight recommended to me was almost 4 times the amount that is considered safe for me. Someone relying on this could literally be killed due to being overweighted and drown.

2 stars because the interface was easy to navigate.

### 2/5 — Error for steel tanks?

*2022-03-28, version 1.3*

When switching from steel 100 to steel 80, the calculator says add 1 lbs. This must be wrong?

### 3/5 — Alright, but only for single tank diving

*2022-01-31, version 1.3*

Limited cylinder sizes and no option to add more than one

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work properly

*2021-03-13, version 1.3*

I entered my weight as 94 kg and it said I needed 7.6kg. I then changed it to 207 lb (94kg) and it said I needed 28lb. 28lb is more 12kg. Not much use.....

## Frequently asked questions about Buoyancy Calc

### What does Buoyancy Calc do?

Buoyancy Calc helps scuba divers determine the suggested amount of weight needed to achieve neutral buoyancy. It takes into account factors like your body weight, the type of water you're diving in, your tank, and your exposure suit.

### How do I use Buoyancy Calc?

You enter your weight in either pounds or kilograms. Then, you select the type of water (e.g., freshwater, saltwater), the type of tank you are using, and the type of exposure suit you have on. The app will then provide a suggested weight.

### Is Buoyancy Calc free to use?

Yes, Buoyancy Calc is a free application. There are no in-app purchases or advertisements mentioned in its description, indicating it is completely free for users.

### What factors influence the suggested weight?

The app considers your personal weight, the type of water (freshwater or saltwater), the type of tank you are using, and the type of exposure suit you are wearing. These variables significantly impact the required ballast for neutral buoyancy.

### Can this app guarantee perfect neutral buoyancy?

The app provides a good estimate based on PADI's guidelines. However, it notes that achieving peak performance buoyancy may require further adjustments based on individual factors like gender, physique, suit age, and accessories. It's a starting point, not a definitive solution for every dive.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4 — 2026-03-03

This update brings a completely refreshed look and feel to Buoyancy Calculator. The interface has been redesigned with a deep ocean-inspired dark theme — rich navy backgrounds, teal accents, and high-contrast text that's easy to read in bright sunlight or a dimly lit dive shop.

The results panel at the bottom of the screen has been given more visual prominence, making your lead weight recommendation impossible to miss at a glance. Unit and water type selectors now use a styled segmented control with clear active/inactive states, and the exposure suit and tank pickers render with crisp, readable text throughout.

Under the hood, the iOS deployment target has been updated to 15.6, ensuring compatibility with current devices and the latest system frameworks.

### 1.3 — 2020-03-29

Multiple tank types and sizes to choose from, choose between short and long wetsuits, and dynamic weight calculation on the fly!
Also fixes issue with not working on iPhone 5 devices.

### 1.2 — 2019-10-05

Now supports iOS versions 11-13, including dark mode on iOS 13
Fixed layout issues on iPads

### 1.1 — 2019-10-04

Improvements: Cleaned up some code for a smaller app file size
