### 2/5 — Not what I thought it would be

*2020-07-11*

From reading another review I thought I could take a picture of a butterfly and the app would identify it- I have other apps for birds and flora that do this. But it does not do this, so you need to record all the details and it gives you a list of all the possibilities. So not really what I wanted so beware if you think you can go out, see a butterfly, take a picture and get the app to identify it from the picture.

### 4/5 — Good App

*2020-06-29, version 9.0*

Interesting and informative. I’m not an expert but it gives me a good idea what I’m looking at

### 3/5 — Wrong I’d

*2020-01-14, version 8.9*

The photograph of the Wood White in the index is wrong.the photo is actually a Small white not a wood white,

### 4/5 — Pretty good

*2019-09-20, version 8.9*

That’s it like all apps could be better

### 4/5 — A lot happens in a year...

*2019-07-24*

5* but the app needs some TLC... a lot happens in tech in a year. The scrolling is a bit slow and I’m sure there are a few other upgrades that could be addressed. Show us some love iOS Developer 😘

### 3/5 — Butterfly I D

*2019-07-22, version 8.9*

The family picture is in fact a Camberwell Beauty not a tortoiseshell. Although the Camberwell Beauty is mentioned in all British Butterfly books it is omitted from this app!

### 2/5 — More photographs needed

*2019-06-03*

This app just isn’t worth the money. To be of any use you need at least four photos of each butterfly - open and closed wings of both the female and the male. The females are rarely shown and yet they are much more difficult to identify.
A distribution map would also be helpful.

### 5/5 — Butterflies in my garden.

*2019-03-24, version 8.9*

I love this App. Quick and easy to use.

### 5/5 — Butterflies

*2019-01-16, version 8.9*

I find this a great app out in the field 👍

### 4/5 — Easy to use app

*2018-09-05, version 8.9*

Simple to use app and very informative

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Not worth the money

*2023-07-16, version 9.1*

After buying this app you then have to buy another app to use your camera to take photos to identify 😡😡😡😡

### 1/5 — Butterfly ID

*2022-06-03, version 9.1*

Disappointed with this app, no instructions to help users, and far too complicated. I feel like I have wasted the download costs.

### 1/5 — Poor

*2021-08-24, version 9.1*

I thought by paying this money it would be Better than the free Seek app and more accurate, no is the answer, gets the commonest ones worryingly wrong , waste of time and expense, wish I hadn’t bothered, I’d love a refund

### 1/5 — Bait and switch

*2021-08-01, version 9.1*

This app claims to include automatic recognition from photos. Perhaps worth the cost of download? Ah, but for that, you have to pay still more. Save yourself the money and buy a book. This practice shouldn’t be allowed by Apple in its App Store.

### 1/5 — No stars!

*2021-04-12, version 9.1*

I have used this app to help identify butterflies, from good photos taken on my iphone. Started my trial with ones I knew already, didn’t get a single one right. Finally took photo of Speckled Wood from the high quality chart we keep at home - app told me it was a Scotch Argus, next choice Blue Pansy!! Good thing it was a cheap App, now deleted

### 1/5 — Poor

*2020-08-06, version 9.0*

Females rarely depicted. Some butterflies only the underside included others the reverse. Not an I.D. guide at all. £3.99 and a could have used the internet for free.

### 1/5 — Wrong and expensive

*2019-04-11, version 8.9*

I don’t know that much about butterflies but I’ve already spotted three mistakes which in a guide to butterflies isn’t exactly w hat you want. There are photos wrongly categorised and butterflies that don’t ever come to this country included. It feels a bit amateurish. The free Butterfly conservation ID app is much better. Free!

### 2/5 — Disappointed

*2022-06-23, version 9.1*

Paid for the in app purchase to be able to take photo to id but no ability to do so that I can find. Have searched everywhere for the option to id from a photo

### 2/5 — Not enough photos

*2021-08-25*

For many of the butterflies there are not enough photos. At a minimum for many species you need 4. Male, female, wings open, wings closed. Yesterday I was trying to distinguish chalkhill blues from common blues and there just wasn’t the information. I wished I’d had my book with me.

### 2/5 — Low Tech App

*2020-08-09*

I have an app to identify plants from a snap, the same for wine from a photo of the label, so I expected this app to identify butterflies from a photo. Sadly it’s just a photo album in an app, that relies on ‘twenty questions’ to get you the result. After spending £3.99 on the app, I had to post my picture on Facebook to get the answer from friends. It turned out my subject wasn’t on this app anyway, because it was a Jersey Tiger Moth, a day-flying moth that looks like a butterfly. But a moth, and this is a butterfly app.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Bang on butterfly app

*2020-06-18, version 9.0*

This app has allowed me to find butterflies whilst out walking with an excellent database of UK butterflies.

### 5/5 — Good ID

*2020-05-10, version 8.9*

It is so good to be able to identify the butterflies one sees!

### 5/5 — A really good app

*2020-04-30*

I really enjoy identifying butterflies when I’m out and about and this app has given me a grounding in identifying butterflies and really given me the bug

### 5/5 — Very impressed

*2020-04-21*

I like this app so far. It seems easy and enjoyable to use. I went on user ratings rather than price (there are cheaper apps) and so far haven’t been disappointed.

### 5/5 — Good app

*2019-09-06, version 8.9*

Good app.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2019-08-08, version 8.9*

Extremely informative and user friendly. Love it. Love all your apps. Please do one for insects too.

### 5/5 — Check your flight !

*2019-07-25, version 8.9*

Useful for everyone to check out all the various species which inhabit the uk.

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2019-07-03, version 8.9*

These apps are well worth the money

### 5/5 — Always available

*2019-05-27*

“The best camera is the one you have with you” is an adage for photographers. Likewise the best reference book is the one you hold when you see something for the first time. I usually have my mobile to hand when out and find this series of apps very handy for identifying flora and fauna. This enhances my exploration of the countryside. It’s like having a knowledgeable companion for company.

### 5/5 — Great Teaching App for the Curious.

*2019-04-11*

If you are like me and don’t know one butterfly from another then you must get this app. I am a long distance walker and found it frustrating to see beautiful and plain butterflies and did not know what I was looking at. I like nothing better now than photographing one and then identifying and recording my sighting. Get it!!!
