## What is ButterflyCount?

The world is increasingly aware of the perilous state of wildlife, and there have been widescale reports of declines in numbers of insects. Butterflies are no exception, being threatened in many parts of the world. There is an urgent need to greatly improve the knowledge of this vital part of biodiversity to help inform their conservation.

This App enables you to contribute to butterfly conservation by providing important information on where different species occur and the numbers found in different places across the world. Contribute your counts of butterfly species alongside accurate location information, added via a dynamic map or via GPS acquired route information. You can add photos to support your observations. This free resource makes it easy to keep track of what you see, while making your data openly available for scientific research, education and conservation.

Your data will be kept securely and will regularly backed up. Your sightings will be made available to experts to review and, with support of national co-ordinators, will be shared with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) to enable them to be used for wider research to support conservation.

### 4/5 — Great concept and with a few tweaks could be brilliant.

*2025-06-13*

Great concept and with a few tweaks could be brilliant. If you get stuck in Moths Survey mode check the settings and change this to 15 minute survey. Sometimes it sticks in moth mode which can be frustrating. Photos could be better as only show one image.

### 5/5 — Martin

*2025-03-26*

Brilliant app for recording butterflies and moths anywhere in Europe. You can make sightings lists, do transects, record moth trap sessions and conduct 15 minute counts, all with customised drop down menus. You can see and download all your records and they all get passed on for verification before entering the Central European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme database to help conserve them. A revolution in recording.

### 5/5 — 15 minutes well spent

The new 15 minute app for butterfly recording is a must. It’s easy to use (even for those that don’t like gadgets!) and quantifies the effort put into your valuable surveys!
