A shame because I really enjoyed this app. ### 2/5 — Silent Review *2021-01-27, version 1.1.9* Have found BYKI to be the most useful program for learning languages - the computer based version has allowed me to operate in a few with relative ease. The App not so much. Yes, this is another sound issue related review. I followed the advice of reviewer MB4658 and the help/settings steps to no avail; the app sounds would not not play. However, being able to access the flash cards from my phone for my own personal review time between computer based sessions was nice. Not especially helpful, but nice. The lay out of the app is intuitive and reflects a very clear presentation. The sound issue is the only negative. My hope is that the app will be updates to reflect the ease of use for which BYKI is known. ### 1/5 — Buggy: no sound *2016-05-01, version 1.1.1* Without working sound the app is pretty worthless. However, after about a month of use it just stopped and would no longer work! It got to a point where I couldn’t even open it. So I deleted the app and re-downloaded it. It still doesn’t work and it doesn’t remember any of my purchases! I have Portuguese in Spanish previously purchased with it, but nothing works now. It continuously says that I do not have a gateway. Sad because it was actually very helpful and had a very good review set up! If the apps is working it’s helpful easy to navigate and works well, but now it’s absolutely useless and I would never recommend it. I got the computer version years and years ago and was sad to lose it when I moved all of my data to a new computer. I was so happy to find it again on the App Store! It’s simple, yet very effective. I’m using it for the Swahili course, so I can’t speak about the other courses or if they’re better or worse. As far as the Swahili one goes, it looks like they’ve added more phrases since I last used this program on my computer, which is cool. It’s also so much more affordable than many other subscription-based language leaning apps. I love that you can just pay for what you want without having to pay for it forever. I like the simplicity and ease of use, too. I received a very quick response and instructions on how to fix. Part of their letter: When Apple released their 8.2 update our older Byki individual language apps no longer displayed the texts on the cards. The older apps are no longer available. We have released a new Byki Deluxe Mobile app that includes the fix and we can provide you (further info) for having purchased our older app previously. To download go to the App Store or Google Play Store and search for Byki Deluxe. Download the app for free..... I signed into my Byki lists online where I found their email addy. ### 4/5 — No sound *2019-01-08, version 1.1.7* I’m using an iPhone and There was initially no sound. But thank you for the FAQ section fix of turning on the side rocker button (ringer) not sure why it has to be on while using it, but I can switch it on and off easy enough ### 4/5 — Worthy *2017-01-24, version 1.1.3* Like most of flash cards, it depends on the learner. ### 4/5 — Good app *2015-03-07, version 1.0.5* I really like this app and find it a good way to acquire vocabulary and phrases for my new language, but I have two issues with it that prevent me from giving it a 5-star rating. First, some of the words are incorrect or inconsistent. In the language I am learning, I've found two that are flat out wrong, and several that don't match up completely (the English says "this" in a sentence, but the translation is of "that"). Second, you can't control the amount of time it takes for an item to become stale. I have almost 1100 learned items now and use the app multiple times per day, and I usually have such an overwhelming number of "stale" items that I can never get through them and move on to new content. I opened the app this morning after 24 hours of non-use and had 147 stale items. I spent about 30 minutes going through the review just to come back 10 minutes later to almost 70 more. I would really like to set it so that it takes more time for items I've gotten consistently correct to become stale again (I'm tired of seeing "hello" and "thank you" come up every few days-- I've got those down pat!). Overall, the app is worth the $7.99 per language. ### 3/5 — Great app but limited options *2019-08-03, version 1.1.7* I’ve used BYKI on the computer and you are able to download additional lists created by other students. Why not make this available on the app? Or...we should be able to add our own learning lists to review. ### 3/5 — zotimajk *2014-12-25, version 1.0.4* Flash cards are valuable in learning languages. Byki enables review of mistakes more frequently in the exercises, which is helpful, but doesn't let you delete words or phrases you know well, wasting time in the exercise.
