## What is Cadence Journal?

Cadence is a personal field notebook for how you spend your time.

### What Makes Cadence Different

**Untracked Time Is Visible**
Most apps hide the time you forget to log. Cadence treats it as information. Gaps in your day — the 20 minutes between meetings, the hour that disappeared after lunch — appear directly in your timeline as first-class entries. Tap to fill them or leave them as-is. Either way, you see the full picture.

**Remarks Over Numbers**
A time entry without context is just a number. Cadence lets you attach Remarks — short, taggable notes — to any activity block as it's happening. "Finally cracked the auth bug #backend," "Third interruption this hour," "Good conversation with Sara #1on1." Your day becomes a narrative you can search and revisit, not a pie chart.

**Two Ways to Track**
Not everyone tracks the same way. In **Start mode**, tap an activity and a timer runs forward — classic stopwatch tracking. In **Log mode**, tap an activity to label the time since your last entry — no timer needed, just retroactive labeling. Switch between modes freely depending on what suits the moment.

### Core Features

**Activity Sets & Schedules**
Organize activities into named Sets for different contexts — Work, Personal, Study, whatever fits your life. Schedule them to switch automatically by time of day and day of week. Your tracking palette adapts to your rhythm without manual intervention.

**Morning Intentions & Evening Reflections**
Cadence prompts you to write a brief intention each morning and a reflection each evening. These frame your day with purpose on one end and awareness on the other. They're optional, never nagging, and appear alongside your data when you review a day.

**Smart Timeline**
Your day is rendered as a continuous stream: activities, gaps, and remarks woven together. Tap to expand details, double-tap to add a note inline, swipe to edit or delete. Conflicts and overlaps are detected automatically and surfaced for resolution.

**Tag Analytics**
Every #tag you write in a Remark becomes searchable and filterable across your entire history. See which tags appear most often, which activities they cluster around, and how their frequency changes over time.

**Reports**
Daily, weekly, and month-to-date reports with activity breakdowns, comparisons to prior periods, a focus quality score derived from context-switch frequency, and highlighted remarks from the period.

### Your Data, Your Device

Cadence is built on a strict Local-First architecture. There are no servers, no user accounts, no analytics SDKs, no advertising code, and no subscriptions.

- **Full JSON Archives** — Back up your entire database, including every remark, note, and setting, to a portable JSON file.
- **Granular CSV Export** — Export your timeline with configurable columns for analysis in any spreadsheet or scripting tool.
- **Privacy by Design** — We cannot see your data and we don't want to. Your information lives on your device and in your iCloud backups. That's it.

## Version history (last 1 release)

### 1.5 — 2026-03-10

**What's New in This Version (1.5)**

**Accurate cross-boundary reporting**
Reports now correctly attribute time for activities that span period boundaries. A block that crosses midnight — like sleep — is proportionally counted on each day rather than being fully counted on both. Daily totals now reflect actual hours within the day, and weekly and monthly breakdowns are similarly precise.

**Also in this update:**
- Pause duration is now proportionally allocated when a paused block spans a report boundary
- Fragmentation metrics (switches/hr, average block length) use the same corrected duration logic
- Comparison baselines (7-day average, prior week, prior month) benefit from the same fix
