The links to Wikipedia articles for each item are an excellent feature. One star deducted for occasional factual errors (see below), and use of obscure units of measure, such as Mw fot earthquake intensity. Error example: 20 January 1953 says Eisenhower was the first US Presidenr inaugurated on 20 January in accordance with the 20th Amendment. Not true. Unfortunately, very few of the headlines are of a positive nature. You will see lots of entries like “Hitler takes Power….” and “Hundreds killed in…”, but very few “First space flight…” or “Pulitzer Prize awarded to…” It seems this app skews toward sensationalized, negative, depressing, horrific events. But then again, maybe human history is all about death and destruction, with a sprinkle of highlights. Either way, I no longer want to start each day with a dose of depressing. ### 1/5 — Latest change *2021-04-15, version 1.8.4* I enjoy this app immensely - yet the ability to share on social media has been removed eliminating the ability to share quickly. Le 21 Août, ça peut être l’Estonie éventuellement . ### 1/5 — Negativity, hand-picked from all over the world *2019-11-18, version 1.8.3* Instead of me reviewing this app, let it speak for itself. Here are some “events” that happened on this day that this app chose to “recall” for me. App lets you copy paste them so here’s a preview for you, these were at the top of the list: ”17.11.2013 – Fifty people are killed when Tatarstan Airlines Flight 363 crashes at Kazan Airport, Russia. 17.11.2012 – At least 50 schoolchildren are killed in an accident at a railway crossing near Manfalut, Egypt. 17.11.2000 – A catastrophic landslide in Log pod Mangartom, Slovenia, kills seven, and causes millions of SIT of damage. It is one of the worst catastrophes in Slovenia in the past 100 years. 17.11.1997 – In Luxor, Egypt, 62 people are killed by six Islamic militants outside the Temple of Hatshepsut, known as Luxor massacre.” The list is long and does have some interesting events like: “17.11.1947 – American scientists John Bardeen and Walter Houser Brattain observe the basic principles of the transistor, a key element for the electronics revolution of the 20th century.” Most of the “events”, however, have to do with catastrophes, war-related deaths, massacres, accidents and destruction. Is that supposed to be entertaining or insightful? Isn’t it enough that we already have News channels for this sort of thing? To fill yourself up with negativity in such an unproductive way - without context or purpose is very unhealthy. What possible purpose could it serve to inform me that in 2012 “At least 50 schoolchildren are killed in an accident” at some railway crossing in Egypt? Am I supposed to listen to my music or eat lunch while reading this casually? Why not instead focus on the good/positive things such as scientific discoveries, art, music, literature... things that shaped and inspired the world in *positive* ways? Surely there are plenty on this day, every day. Such events inspire positive thinking throughout the day and make us feel more positive about our own affairs. As Humans we have a strong tendency to relate easily to the suffering and demise of other members of our own species, in fact this is what’s known as Empathy. To take advantage of this susceptibility and build a whole app to exploit it, well that’s just low. ### 1/5 — Too depressing! *2019-03-17, version 1.8.3* I had this app for about 2 wks & deleted it. It was mostly a list of wars, crashes & accidents. How about some fun facts or interesting little known info??? It was instead a depressing litany of people being crappy to each other. It is a part of history but jeez, how about some soul inspiring happy moments? Or maybe during black history or women’s history months, focusing on that. Just really hated reading lists of how many peeps died on this date for whatever reason. ### 1/5 — Good idea, terrible content. *2019-01-03, version 1.8.3* Is this app produced by the military? This would be a good educational history app if it was not solely focused on tragedies and war related events. How about the inclusion of some of the wonderful things that have happened in history? The wonderful things are the things that helped get us to where we are and also helped us overcome some of the tragedies that this app is fixated on. As an avid history buff I enjoy learning nuanced moments and interventions that changed the future. The App selects historical topics that change daily and guide the reader to a more in-depth discussion in Wikipedia. If a subject interests you, then take the next step and further your research using other resources.
