### 1/5 — Deleting the App

*2024-05-05, version 7.0.1*

Thanks for forcing an update and introducing a paywall. I used to enjoy keeping up with local news, I will get my news elsewhere. Deleting the app now and won’t be coming back.
You can’t charge more than national news outlets for worse journalism.

### 1/5 — Don’t bother

*2024-05-02, version 7.0.1*

Have to have a subscription for all articles since the update. Total garbage.

### 1/5 — Awful app

*2024-04-30, version 7.0.1*

I echo the many other comments. The new app is absolutely awful. I'm a paid subscriber for the electronic version of the Herald but the app says I'm not. When I do manage to login, it kicks me out after a few articles. The layout and organization are terrible. It clearly wasn't tested before unleashing it on the public. I imagine that the Herald is losing many subscribers over this; the app is unusable.

### 1/5 — Thinking of cancelling my 46 year subscription to the Calgary Herald

*2024-04-18, version 7.0.1*

In order for me to get any news, I now have to be willing to allow you to share my information with anyone! Where is the option even to get ALL the news that I was able to get with the old epaper?

### 1/5 — Terrible update

*2024-04-16, version 7.0.1*

It keeps telling me I don’t have a subscription, I have had one for years. The layout is terrible. Used my app to read about Flames games as daily paper never reports on it, now it’s useless as well. Cancelling my subscription

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2024-04-10, version 7.0.1*

Deleted the app since the latest update. I used to read it regularly.

### 1/5 — Brutal

*2024-04-06, version 7.0.1*

Used to be free with ads, now you have to pay $15 a month to read articles with spelling mistakes. Good luck, have fun trying to recover readership 🤡

### 1/5 — New app is dreadful….and I have a subscription!

*2024-04-05, version 7.0.1*

I am beyond frustrated with this app and with the amount of time I have spent on the phone with agents who just want to get rid of you. Not one promised call back has been made. I chose my selections (three times). Says I will receive an email with a code. Email address is correct. No email arrives. We get the Herald and the delivered. But we travel and want digital access. The National Post app remains the same, but I am about to cancel everything.
Surely management is informed of the bad reviews and should be acknowledging the problems. Baby boomers are big newspaper readers and you have angered many of us and not done one thing to revert to the old one or even try to fix the probs. Leave well enough alone!!

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2024-04-05, version 7.0.1*

This was a bad update. Confusing and article limit is pointlsss.

### 1/5 — Terrible update!!

*2024-04-04, version 7.0.1*

I enjoyed reading the news from CH for years but as of a few days ago, i now have to subscribe just to see a couple articles… if i want more, i have to sign up for $15 a month.
App has been deleted!!

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2024-04-02, version 6.3.4*

Congrats Herald, you’ve completely ruined the app. $15 a month for this, you’re out of your mind. Deleting as we speak, I’ll get my news elsewhere.

### 1/5 — Must have a subscription

*2024-04-02, version 7.0.1*

Since the newest update you must have a subscription ($14.99/month) to read anything. So now not only can we not get important news on social media our news won’t provide us relevant news without payment. Guess I will go without now. Oh there is a gang shooting the next block over…sorry that’s $14.99 to find out.

### 1/5 — Swing and a miss

*2024-04-02, version 7.0.1*

The newest build is confusing, counterintuitive, and not easily navigable. Change for the sake of change is not progress. I wish I could revert to the previous iteration.

Sorry, folks. I’m certain that you meant well and that you worked very diligently.

Guess I’ll just use the website build from my browser.

### 1/5 — App is going backwards

*2024-04-01, version 7.0.1*

I can’t believe this app is now pretty much unusable. I was using this for years, what did you do? This update will probably cost you thousands of users! Did no one even test this? A child could tell you this is way worse then what you had before.

### 1/5 — Why?

*2024-04-01, version 7.0.1*

Used to read daily, now it wants you to register and subscribe and pay a fee to read. Deleted, bye bye. Too bad as they had better content than CBC and CTV, almost as good as the Globe but it was free. The world is way too full of other ways to get the news to pay for an app.

### 1/5 — Keep billing but no paper???

*2026-03-08, version 7.8.3*

I have had a weekend print subscription for over 20 years. On occasion, a couple of times a year we have not received our paper. No big deal……the account was credited and we moved on. However, in the last 3 weeks we have not received our weekend papers. When we notify the Herald of the missed delivery we get an automated response that a paper will be delivered…….that doesn’t happen either. When we make them aware of the replacement not being delivered we get an apologetic response indicating they have forwarded the issue to “distribution”. Over the course of the last 3 weeks there has not been any communication by the Herald as to the reason for the missed deliveries……you don’t need or be a rocket scientist to figure it out……THEY DONT HAVE A DELIVERY PERSON TO FULFILL THERE DELIVERY OBLIGATIONS. Unbelievable poor customer service and communication. Bye bye Calgary Herald, subscription will be cancelled!

### 1/5 — Hate it

*2025-02-26, version 7.2.0*

I absolutely hate the new Calgary Herald app. Just downloaded it BY ACCIDENT February 2025. There’s so many ads it’s like a news story is the ad and I can’t find the story. Three lines then and ad, three more lines in an ad. One column has 15 or 20 ads. What ar pathetic waste of time to search through adds to find the story. Where is the old app please?? And then a limit of three stories… I’m out..

### 1/5 — iOS 17/18

*2024-10-15, version 7.0.7*

Opening the app kills any audio stream you are playing

### 1/5 — Update???

*2024-10-07, version 7.0.7*

Nice…. Just updated this app and now you require a $14.99 subscription to see more than top three stories. I don’t know how you justify this price for your late to the party breaking news stories and the grammatical and spelling errors..

### 1/5 — Functionality is Pathetic

*2024-10-03, version 7.0.7*

The current version of the Herald app is absolutely terrible. As a major change from the way the old version functioned, they decided to organize all the news articles into sections (Top News, Local, Sports, etc). There are a couple of problems with this. Firstly, the same news articles are often repeated in different sections. What a waste of my time to scroll past news articles I’ve already seen. Secondly, as you scroll down through the sections, they initially show up blank and take WAY TOO LONG to populate. This never used to happen with the old version of the app. As a result I get frustrated by the long wait to populate news stories and usually end up leaving the app and going to another news app to get my news information. The other annoying thing is the way they implemented the pay wall to read articles. While I can appreciate the need to have customers pay to use the app, what is frustrating is that every month or so, it seems to lose your login credentials and forces you to login again to be able to read articles again. Why is this happening?? This doesn’t happen with other apps that require payment to use them.

All of these issues is making it increasingly hard for me to continue as a loyal Calgary Herald customer.

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2024-09-23, version 7.0.6*

This app is awful. Each section loads very slowly (none of my other three newspaper apps do that so I don’t think it’s a problem with my phone). And the number of articles represented is so limited (even with a subscription) that I have to go online to the read the ePaper which is a terrible format on a small screen like a phone. The old Herald app was substantially better.

### 1/5 — 2024 App rewrite is worse than ever

*2024-09-03, version 7.0.3*

This app was thrown into the mix with all other Postmedia papers on the same app. It is horribly slow and doesn’t populate news until you scroll past it. Postmedia needs to succeed in the digital world. I am absolutely shocked that they would not try to be the best app out there for news. All complaints get forwarded to the dev team, which seems like talking to the cat that ate the mouse. Upper management needs to know how bad this is for their future and share price(success).

### 1/5 — Bad update!

*2024-07-26, version 7.0.3*

When are you going to fix your so-called fix? I am a subscriber and have stopped using this as it will only display in portrait mode. It was working fine before it was ‘fixed’.

### 1/5 — Slow to update

*2024-07-17, version 7.0.3*

The ‘loading stories’ comes up to a blank screen frequently when I scroll across sections and often it won’t even load at all. I don’t want to sit there staring at a blank screen when it’s time to read the news.

### 1/5 — Latest App Update a Reason To Cancel Subscription

*2024-07-10, version 7.0.3*

Forcing portrait orientation on an iPad with a keyboard attachment, and actually not allowing landscape orientation per the device’s sensors - like the vast majority of the apps in the iPad ecosystem is an arrogant mistake. Your readers - especially your paying ones are free to use their device the way THEY want to, not the way some developer who probably doesn’t even read the paper does.

## Most praised reviews (8 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Terrible App

*2024-07-25, version 7.0.3*

Even though I've paid the subscription this App is terrible. Slow. Way too many ads that can't even close after they've shown. Don't subscribe. Don't renew if you have subscribed.

### 5/5 — Nice update, how much?

*2013-05-14, version 2.4.2*

I'm glad they've decided to start charging, but I can't see anyway to subscribe in the app? Just a way to restore a purchase, but no way to actually do the purchase.

### 4/5 — Beeko

*2024-03-31, version 7.0.1*

Downloaded the new App on my iPhone have a full digital subscription but I cannot get it to share with my wife. I have family sharing and sharing the App enabled reloaded the App from shared and logged the other phone on and partial subscription / purchase subscription pops up.
Is there something that needs to be toggled / incomplete beta testing ??

### 3/5 — Duplicate Articles

*2024-10-09, version 7.0.7*

It would be appreciated if duplication of articles were eliminated in online sections Opinion Local etc.

### 3/5 — Still freezing and now crashing

*2018-11-13*

Unfortunately the fix only worked for one day - now it not only freezes, but also crashes too. Most crashes happen when reading world news.

**Developer response:** Dear Duster bunny,

Please be advised that we have been experiencing technical issues with the Calgary Herald Mobile App which may have resulted in consistent crashing. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

The issues have since been resolved with a new version that offers a seamless experience. You can now download the new version 4.4.2 through App Store.

We value your feedback and thank you for your continued support and readership.

### 2/5 — Not fully functioning

*2024-11-19, version 7.0.7*

The articles rarely uploaded for me so never caught up on local news through this app. At the cost, it was way to pricey to justify sticking with it. Hope it improves in the future.

### 2/5 — Hollow shell

*2024-10-16, version 7.0.7*

So sad there is nothing left of the once great Calgary Herald. In a time when we need good journalism more than ever.

### 2/5 — Pretty Skinny

*2024-10-04, version 7.0.7*

I’m a paid subscriber to the CH. Even though it’s been digital for a long time now, it used to be a fatter paper. More stories, more features, pictures you could zoom into, even more advertising. It was good. It’s why I subscribe. Lately that is not the case. It’s like the CH is on a diet… and could use a couple burgers and fries to fatten it up.
