## What is California Permit?

Semaforo helps you prepare for the knowledge test, the written test for your instruction permit and Class C driver’s license in California. The app is in English and follows your iPhone’s language. More states are on the way.

OUR OWN QUESTIONS, FROM THE HANDBOOK
California does not publish the test’s questions, so we wrote ours: 570 practice questions from the California Driver’s Handbook and the California Vehicle Code, in 26 short chapters, from traffic signs and right-of-way to parking, freeways and alcohol. 78 of them come with the handbook’s own pictures: signs, signals and road situations. The app always says the questions are ours, never the test’s.

THE WHY OF EVERY ANSWER
After each answer, a short explanation of ours, written from the handbook and the law. Chapter 1’s are free to try; the rest come with Semaforo Pro.

A FULL PRACTICE TEST
36 questions with three choices each, and you pass with at most 6 wrong. No time limit. At the end you see each mistake with the right answer.

REVIEW WHAT YOU FORGET
With Semaforo Pro, the questions you are about to forget come back every day. Your mistakes and the questions you saved are free: a mistake leaves the list after two right answers in a row.

GREEN MEANS READY
Red, amber, green. The light turns green only when you would pass again and again. No easy greens. With Semaforo Pro it also tells you what to review to get there.

FREE, AND SEMAFORO PRO
Every question and every practice test, without limits, are free, and so are the traffic light, your mistakes and saved questions. No ads, no account. Your progress stays on your iPhone and, once the questions are downloaded, the app works offline.
Semaforo Pro opens our explanations past chapter 1, smart review, what to review to get to green and the Quick quiz widget. It is an in-app purchase, three ways: for good, paid once and shared with your family; a 30-day pass that does not renew; or a free 3-day trial, once, that simply ends. No subscription. If you had Semaforo before Pro, everything stays open for you.

The questions and explanations are written by Semaforo from the California Driver’s Handbook, the California Vehicle Code and the California MUTCD, cited by section, never reproduced. The pictures are the handbook’s own, credited to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Semaforo is an independent app. It is not made by the State of California or the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and is not affiliated with them, and its questions are not the DMV’s knowledge test’s.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4 — 2026-10-23

• The Pro page now links to the privacy policy and the terms of use, and says what happens after the 3-day free trial: you’re back on the free version, you pay nothing and nothing renews.
• With large text, the card at the end of a trial or a 30-day pass now scrolls all the way down.
• Every question and mock test stays free, without limits.

### 1.3 — 2026-10-22

• New: Ontario and Quebec. 758 practice questions in English for Ontario’s G1 knowledge test and 820 in French for Quebec’s Class 5, written by us from each province’s handbook and law, each with a practice test.
• New: Semaforo Pro opens our explanations, smart review and the road to green. For good, for 30 days without renewal, or free for 3 days. Every question and practice test stays free. Had Semaforo before? Everything stays open for you.
• Setting up is quicker: the first steps no longer ask you to pick a licence.
• New in Settings › Your data: you can turn off the anonymous statistics. They never include your answers or anything you type.

### 1.2 — 2026-10-20

• New: Alberta. 688 practice questions for the Class 7 knowledge test, written by us from the Driver's Guide, each with its explanation, and a 30-question practice test.
• Semaforo is in English and follows your iPhone's language.

### 1.1 — 2026-10-19

• New: Albania. Nearly 2,700 official true-or-false statements for licence B, word for word with their figures, a practice exam of 40 statements in 40 minutes, and for 2,605 of them an explanation in Albanian, written by us.
• New: Georgia. 1,052 official tickets for licences B and B1 with their pictures, and a mock exam of 30 tickets in 30 minutes.
• Semaforo now speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Albanian, Georgian, Polish, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Japanese too, following your iPhone’s language. Settings › App language lets you choose.
• Studying Italy’s questions in French or German? Widgets and Apple Watch now show them in that language too.

### 1.0.5 — 2026-10-16

• A new country: Israel, with its 716 text questions for licence B, word for word, in six languages: Hebrew, English, Arabic, Russian, French and Spanish.
• A practice exam for Israel: 30 questions, 40 minutes, at least 26 right. The questions with pictures are not in yet, so the mix differs from the real exam.
• On an iPhone set to Hebrew, the app is in Hebrew too, right to left.
• Clearer explanations, lessons and sign pages: we corrected many of them.
• In other countries’ exams, the A, B, C answers have a new look.
