I’ve been using it to animated for over a year. It’s very easy to figure out, and I believe I haven’t explored it entirely yet. One of my biggest complaints is how easily the app crashes. It wasn’t really that big of an issue as it only would remove a frame or two once I rebooted it. Along with that issue it does remind you to create backups in case this happens. Although, there was an incident today. When I was animating, I was reminded to back up my work as usual. I was very proud of my work and had a lot done. I was going to finish up the frame I was working on until I made a mistake. I pressed undo, and it wasn’t working right. It undid the entire frame. I pressed redo, and then over half of my work was deleted. I went back and forth between redo and undo. Unfortunately my work had been deleted. I believe this is partially my fault, but this had never happened to me until today. With that, I would recommend this app, but just be careful. ### 4/5 — A few flaws *2026-07-03, version 2.6.0* I am currently using this app for my animated show and have loved it, it’s layout especially for frames and the onion skinning are superb and make learning fun. The other features like the transformation layer are a little more finicky and are honestly quite a headache to deal with (especially when making moving backgrounds or simple camera tilts). Another problem are the brushes the ones given are quite good but have a few flaws, for example the smooth pencil which works well until it’s being used for zoomed out shots where it’s becomes streaky and unreadable, additionally the lack of clipping mask makes coloring and shadows a much harder process to the point I’ve resorted to using a different app for the whole cleanup process. I love this app and have a lot of hope for it, I want to use it for everything and hope it gets these, I guess “quality of life” features soon ### 3/5 — It’s a good animation apps. *2025-12-17, version 2.4.2* This app isn’t free. It is only advertised as free, but once you open it, it will ask you to pay $14.99 to use. Kind of weird if you ask me. I purchased it because it looked good. Truly, it’s a great animation app. It has many tools, but I have problem. I don’t know if it’s just my device, but I saw a lot of reviews talking about this. It has a lag issue. Not that it’s delayed, but it will kick you out of the app sometimes and delete some of your progress with it. Sometimes, I’ll be zoomed in and drawing. Once I zoom out the layer under it will be completely deleted. I don’t know why. I thought it was me clicking undo too many times, but the drawing could have been drawn at the beginning and still be deleted. It is kind of annoying because then I have to go and re-draw or re-color something. If you can live with that, I think it’s a good app. I still use it because i payed for it. Is it worth $14.99? Recorded a vid of the bug ### 5/5 — LOVE THIS PROGRAM MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF *2025-05-16, version 2.3.23* callipeg is the only good animation software for ipad that doesnt feel like its a fully mobile or fully desktop program, rather its a secret third thing which works the best. im even more glad its coming to android. however here are some improvements i would suggest - sometimes i try to zoom in on a audio layer and it gets mad at me for trying to draw on a audio layer which im not. if theres no way to fix this issue, then please make it into a tiny lil modal instead of a full screen takeover - allow fingers and 3rd party styli by default, some of us are not rich - maybe you could also make a special icon for pried month otherwise tho, this program has helped me to improve alot and when someone wants to start animating on their ipad or android tablet, i recommend them calipeg first, thank everyone who has worked on this program, i love that real humans respond to reviews, sending love from north carolina!!! ### 5/5 — Great animation app! *2025-05-12, version 2.3.23* Great animation app that gives you premium features the only problem is that sometimes the app crashes. ### 4/5 — cool but problem *2025-05-02, version 2.3.23* The app is cool and fun to maneuver especially since I had been looking for an animating app that’s worth while. This one seemed promising and easy to work with but the problem I have doesn’t come from the app itself. I found out that the app charged me $24.99 instead of $14.99. I thought maybe I had seen the pricing wrong until i searched it up and the pricing of the app is $14.99 and that it’s a one time transaction. I have no Idea why it charged me ten more dollars than the original amount. Please help/fix! I was using Callipeg for recent 2 years but I don’t know why it’s start have a very serious bug with audio and animate location after the update. It’s like I was editing the timing of the animation and every time when I put the framed into the right location, the audio will be messed up that it shows the animation always slower or faster rather than the right timing I put before. Am I setting up project wrong? How can I fix this problem? ### 5/5 — Super app d’animation *2025-04-13, version 2.3.21* Bonjour, j’utilise Callipeg depuis presque 2 ans et j’en suis particulièrement satisfait, c’est une app pour l’animation 2D assez polyvalente, d’autant plus qu’avec le format de l’ipad c’est un peu comme un carnet de dessin que l’on peut transporter partout et sur lequel on peut faire de l’animation. En revanche petit bémol qui n’est pas en lien avec la qualité initiale de l’app, depuis la mise à jour pour les 5 ans de l’app je ne peux plus importer ni images, ni vidéos, cela bloque l’application et m’oblige à fermer et réouvrir Callipeg. De ce que j’ai pu voir sur reddit, le problème n’est pas unique. J’espère que vous pourrez vite effectuer un correctif car j’utilise l’application quotidiennement et cela rend son utilisation moins agréable que ce qu’elle était jusqu’à présent. However there has been a problem with the recent update I think. I went to import a photo to the cel layer so I can draw over it but when I do, it just stops working completely. When you need to make compositions more complex and add details to frames, the right tools naturally appear at your fingertips. In the future, I’d love to see some features inspired by Procreate Dreams—like hotkeys for quickly accessing certain tools or a more compact way of working with layers. But these are more like minor nitpicks rather than real issues; overall, the app is very well-tuned for drawing. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Long projects are extremely difficult *2026-08-20, version 2.6.0* At first I really liked using callipeg and it was very useful to me but as I moved on to longer projects I ran into problems. I realised I needed to work in many small shots to stop it from crashing which was perfectly alright but then I had a looping animation on the hair and background with different lip sync throughout the whole project. I can’t insert the section as a video because the lip sync would be wrong and when I duplicate the moving sections I can’t drag them into a new shot so I have to painstakingly copy, load the other shot, paste, load back to the previous shot and to this over and over for hundreds of frames to get it from one shot to the next with the smaller one often not saving when I go to the menu like its supposed to and the longer one crashing the app constantly. When I realized, I deleted the app and attempted a refund, as I didn’t want to pay 30 usd for an app I didn’t even know if I would use long term. Despite me explaining that I hadn’t realized it’d charge me twice ( once for the App Store, twice to use the app, ) along with me not wanting ANY app for THIRTY DOLLARS, it was denied. I try not to leave negative reviews, even if my problem doesn’t get fixed. Im just frustrated. They seem to all be literal children who think it’s a game and not a piece of near-professional grade software. Occasionally I have seen crashes, but this has gotten way better over the years. They’ve also added features and tightened others up, so it feels like they’re really responsive to feedback (love the addition of transformation layers that preserve the original drawing). Like, I genuinely can’t understand why the ratings are so much lower for this app than for others, because my experience of, say, Animation Desk was actually catastrophic failure on every single animation (frames randomly altering/deleting themselves, or entire layers emptying themselves out for no reason, etc), versus this, which maybe just crashes every so often but automatically backs up so frequently that I have never lost anything when it happens. I would like to see some more love given to the brush system, particularly something like a blur/blend brush or attribute as well eventually. It would also be nice to have something like a mask layer. You can get something like it with the alpha lock feature, but that requires you to duplicate an already finished layer, so it’s not super flexible. However, a thing I would really appreciate is a sort of “free mode” where the project isn’t necessarily separated into pre-set shots, as it can feel really limiting. Like a sort of infinite animation, where you can just add in frames and make it as long as you need, mostly like it’s seen in average animation apps.
