## What is Calorie Burndown?

Calorie Burndown answers one question the Health app doesn't: given what you've eaten and burned today, how much room do you have left? It reads those numbers straight from HealthKit, does the arithmetic against a goal you set, and shows the answer on your phone, your Lock Screen, and your wrist.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED
Calorie Burndown doesn't log food and doesn't estimate your metabolism — it reads what's already in Health. So you'll want a calorie-tracking app writing what you eat to Health, and an Apple Watch recording what you burn. If you already track both, this turns them into a number neither one gives you. If you don't, this app has nothing to read and won't be much use.

EVERY FEATURE IS FREE
No paywall, no subscription, nothing locked. The in-app purchases are optional tips — they unlock nothing, and the app behaves identically whether or not you ever use them.

WORKS EVERYWHERE YOU DO
- iPhone app with an iPad-optimized layout
- A home screen widget that shows your remaining budget at a glance
- Lock Screen widgets, so it's there without unlocking
- A watchOS companion app with real-time numbers, even without your phone nearby
- Watch face complications and Smart Stack widgets

BUILT ON HEALTHKIT, NOT A SEPARATE DATABASE
There's no food database here, no barcode scanner, and no second place to log things. Keep using whatever app you already use; Calorie Burndown reflects it automatically. Your health data is read on your device and never leaves it — there is no account, no server, and nothing to sign up for.

YOUR WATCH WORKS ON ITS OWN
The Watch app queries HealthKit directly, independent of your phone, so you get a real-time deficit number on a run or at the gym even if you left your phone at home. Settings and progress stay in sync across devices whenever they're near each other.

WEEKLY CHECK-IN AND TRENDS
A simple weekly check-in helps you see the bigger trend, not just today's number, and History charts your weight against the pace your target implies.

IF YOU WANT TO SAY THANKS
Settings has a tip jar with three sizes. That is the only place money is ever mentioned. It grants no features, removes no limits, and nothing in the app changes if you skip it.

Calorie Burndown does not diagnose, treat, or provide medical advice — it's a simple deficit calculator built on data you're already tracking in Health.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.6 — 2026-09-23

Kilograms and kilojoules, if that's what you use.

Burndown now shows weight and energy in the units of your region, picked automatically — so a scale that reads kilograms and a label that reads kilojoules no longer need translating in your head. Everything follows: the daily figure, the chart, the widgets, the Watch, the goal you type in, and the page explaining the arithmetic. You can change either unit in Settings, and your goal is stored the same way whichever you pick.

The day's shape, on your wrist.

The Watch app draws the same burndown curve the iPhone shows: what your deficit actually did today, the pace your goal asks for, and where the day lands if nothing more is logged. It sits under the figure rather than a scroll away, and the Smart Stack widget draws it beside the number too. It's read on the Watch itself, so it's there on a run with no phone nearby.

The number now carries its own direction: +680 means ahead of your goal, -340 means behind. The word underneath is gone, because a sign works whether or not you can tell the colours apart.

Also in this update:

- Choose when the check-ins arrive. Midday, evening and the weekly review each have their own time, and the weekly one has its own day — so it no longer has to land on a Sunday morning.
- The goal's manual switch now sits with the target weight and date it applies to.
- The notifications section explains what it schedules instead of repeating a privacy line from the section above it.
- A card on Today no longer sits with a wider margin than the cards around it.
- The Watch chart no longer disappears for the rest of the day when a single reading is missed, and the widget keeps it refreshed between visits.

Every feature is still free. No paywall, no subscription, no account.

### 1.5.4 — 2026-09-19

The Home Screen widget now says when it last updated.

If the small widget and the app ever showed different numbers, this is why. The widget's figures are written minutes apart from the app's, and at the small size nothing on the tile said when — so a reading that was a little behind looked like a disagreement. The time now sits beside the status, the way the larger widget has always shown it.

Also in this update:

- Setting the app up on a new phone no longer opens straight into a weekly check-in. It used to greet a fresh install with a review of a week it had never seen; the first check-in now arrives a week after you start.
- VoiceOver says when a reading was taken, rather than leaving the time out.
- On a day where nothing was logged, VoiceOver names that day instead of calling it today.

### 1.5.3 — 2026-09-16

Fixes the app going blind after you change Health permissions.

If you turned Burndown's access to Health off and back on again, the app kept showing nothing until you force-quit and reopened it. It now re-reads your data whenever you come back to the app, so restoring access is enough on its own.

Also in this update:

- When a Health read fails, the app keeps the last figures it actually read instead of presenting a confident day built from nothing, and it no longer tells you Health is empty when the truth is that it couldn't read.
- The Health permission screen now explains everything Burndown reads — the calories you've eaten and burned, and your weight — rather than naming only one of the four.

Thanks to the tester who reported the permissions bug and confirmed the fix.

Every feature is still free. No paywall, no subscription, no account.

### 1.5.2 — 2026-09-11

Fixes a dead end on the History screen.

If your history hadn't loaded, the "Load history" button did nothing at all — no spinner, no error, no change. It was being treated as a duplicate of the automatic load the app already runs at launch, so tapping it was skipped. It now always does what it says.

Also in this update:

- The weekly summary no longer says you're off pace while the check-in says you're on track.
- Figures over a thousand in the weekly summary now group their digits, like every other number on the screen.

Thanks to the tester who reported the History bug, with the detail that made it findable.

### 1.5.1 — 2026-09-09

Burndown now tells you when your Health data last arrived.

If your iPad and iPhone ever disagree, this is usually why: Health reaches an iPad through iCloud rather than directly, and can run an hour or more behind. The app says so plainly instead of leaving you to wonder, and How It Works explains the whole thing.

Also in this update:

- The weekly summary and the weekly check-in no longer describe the same week in different terms.
- The last 7 days chart labels every day, so you can tell which day a bar belongs to.
- The weekly check-in no longer offers to discard changes you haven't made.

Every feature is still free. No paywall, no subscription, no account.
