CalproSmart is a home-testing app to support management of chronic IBD. Founded by the inventors of the technology behind the ELISA kits for determination of calprotectin in stools and other biological materials, CalproSmart is a system to monitor the effect of medical treatment in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The app is part of a rapid home-based test system that, by calculation of the concentration of the calprotectin protein in an extract of faeces, both enables identification of possible non-responders and patients who are in an early phase of relapse. Patients with IBD are trained by their medical team and by using the system are able to monitor their own illness. The app gives detailed instructions on how to perform the test. The concentration of calprotectin is determined by the color intensity of two lines on the test which is based on antibody-antigen reaction. Using a smartphone, the patient captures an image of the test which is used by the system to calculate the concentration of calprotectin. The level is shown as “traffic lights” (green, yellow, red) in the display as well as the concentration given in mg/kg. The result is sent to the CalproSmart web portal for the patient’s doctor to review. CalproSmart is a smart and easy to use solution that provides a “closed feedback loop” to measure the level of disease and possible needs for actions or changes in treatment. The main issue with this app is the process of scanning the barcode. I feel as if it should give an option for the flash on/off as this affects the focus and also not go into 0.5 mode. I tried this on two different iPhones and wasn’t able to gather my results. ### 1/5 — Can’t get this to work at all *2023-10-16, version 3.1.5* Can’t log in. Can’t re register. Bad for your health ### 1/5 — Camera doesn’t work *2023-07-09, version 3.0.10* The app itself is such a good idea and is really handy how it walks you through the test, amazing how it has in app timers but unfortunately it was all for nothing! As the camera wouldn’t focus on the test when it came to scanning for my results. Each time the damn tests don’t pick up on the camera scanning stage, despite following all the tips (gently moving up and down, tiliting, darker background etc. I feel this is a swindle doing the NHS out of money. Who’s interest is it in if they have to keep sending out more tests? Stool samples aren’t nice to take at the best of times but going through 20mins of faff for it to fail at the final hurdle is so frustrating.
