## What is Calypso Score?

Calypso Score is a feature-rich digital sheet music app for the iPad that lets musicians manage their scores in a way that was never possible with paper. With the app’s pre-built indexes for dozens of popular jazz and pop fakebooks, you’ll never struggle with finding the right chart at a rehearsal or jam session. Calypso Score also provides unique features for navigating through multi-page scores and powerful, easy-to-use tools for organizing and annotating your entire digital library.

Compare these features with other apps to see how Calypso Score changes for the game for digital sheet music:

ORGANIZE YOUR DIGITAL SHEET MUSIC FILES

• Import sheet music PDFs directly from any app that supports file sharing, including common cloud services
• Create optimized sheet music PDFs from your paper notes with the integrated scanner
• Extract only the pages you need from a long file (e.g., just your part from a multi-part score) and assign critical metadata with an intuitive import wizard
• Annotate your songs with text, music symbols, guitar tabs, highlights, and drawings, all optimized for Apple Pencil; no additional purchase required
• Optimize the layout of your songs with a powerful built-in PDF editor; no additional purchase required
• Create your own custom songbooks or gig books for organizing your repertoire; a song can appear in more than one songbook, so you no longer need clumsy workarounds like bookmarks and layers to maintain different annotations and settings for different playing situations
• Easily share your library, including your fakebooks, songbooks, set lists, and individual songs; optionally include annotations, metadata and synchronized recordings with the PDF
• Backup files and metadata to iPad folders or any cloud service

THE transposable NEW BOB BOOK

The New Bob Book is a freely available fake book created by guitarist Bob Roetker. It allows you to transpose any of its 666 songs into any key - melody and chords, in excellent readable quality! You can download it for free.

FIND SONGS QUICKLY

• Get started with pre-built indexes for over 90 commercially published jazz and pop fakebooks*. +100 Aebersolds*
• Search and sort by page #, song title, composer, lyricist, genre, creation date, or user-assigned labels
• Search all fakebooks at once or limit your search to a single book
• Organize selected songs into set lists for quick and easy access at a gig

FREE YOUR HANDS AND EVEN YOUR FEET

• Turn pages automatically without swipes or pedals
• Minimize scrolling and scanning for repeats and jumps with optimized layouts for each turn of a page
• Manually turn pages with a Bluetooth pedal

PRACTICE MORE PRODUCTIVELY

• Attach any number of recorded music tracks to your sheet music for play-along during practice; audio files are linked to the index entry for a song, so only one copy of the track is needed even if the song appears in multiple books
• Synchronize playback of an attached audio file to follow automated page turns or start at a specific bar
• Adjust the pitch and playback speed of audio files - even if synchronized to the score
• Record your practice session; recordings are automatically synced to the score
• Avoid inefficient app-switching with built-in tools including a metronome, keyboard, and tuner

GET STARTED!

Calypso Score offers a familiar look and feel that follows best practices for iPad user experience and integration with iPad services and other apps. Detailed video tutorials (in-app and on our website) and an extensive help system will further help you get started quickly with productive management of your digital sheet music library.

*PLEASE NOTE

Calypso Score only provides the indexes for commercially published fakebooks; it does not provide the books themselves. However, Calypso Score makes it super easy to import any PDF and match it to one of the pre-built indexes.

### 5/5 — Fantastico

*2024-02-10, version 7.2.1*

I’ve used this app for a number of years now. It’s so useful. I find Fake Book storage and index, as well as my own song books, indispensable. Top job! In early days help was always available on request. The new Bob Book is so useful, thank you.

### 5/5 — Beats lugging books around

*2023-04-28, version 7.0.2*

I’ve been using Calypso for over ten years, I think. As an amateur musician who plays flute, soprano, alto, and tenor, Calypso has enabled me to easily choose different fake book pages from various books and form a singular customized volume. Each of the titled tunes is color coded to represent the instrument to be used for that song. Like all great software, there are features that I don’t take advantage of, but the quality of the design keeps me happy with the functions I rely upon. Clearly designed by musicians for musicians, not by some investment group with disinterested developers.

Love the new scanning functionality! Thanks, Ziggy.

### 5/5 — If you use fakebooks look no further

*2022-10-02, version 6.4*

Calypso Score is a good all round score reader, comparable in most ways to the better known ForScore. But Calypso Score surpasses other apps for anyone who uses jazz or pop fakebooks, with an extensive set of pre-built indexes for popular fakebooks so you can quickly find a tune you don't know at a gig or jam session. Added to that is the ability to create and manage your own collections in custom "songbooks", so you're not tied to the tyranny of a big monolithic PDF file for which you have to set up multiple bookmarks. Calypso Score also uniquely features powerful automated page turning along with a innovative way of optimizing the layout of a multi-page song to simplify navigation through repeats and jumps. If you're a jazz/pop musician who is used to lugging around fakebooks, look no further. This app has everything you need in a tool that makes full use of the resources of your iPad.

### 5/5 — Beats lugging books around

*2022-09-08, version 6.4*

I’ve been using Calypso for over eight years.

### 5/5 — Play chords

*2022-08-15*

Very good system. Would like to be able play chords when running score.

**Developer response:** Thank you very much for your feedback, which we really appreciate.

Both of your concerns can be easily resolved.
- in the Calypso settings you can switch off the option ‚Start listener at bar #1‘.
- by long tapping on the edit bars button, you can delete all bar markers.

Please do not hesitate and contact support@calypso-score.com to find out more about your concerns and any further questions. Thank you.

### 5/5 — No other digital sheet music app like it

*2022-06-03, version 6.4*

OK, I’ll get it right out there: I love this app. I’ve been using over a number of years and it just gets better and better. Whilst a lot of people love the Fakebooks, for me it is the automatic/semi-automatic page turning that is just so brilliant. The other week I did a whole gig accompanying a choir using it. Unlike rock music which has a very strict speed, choral music can be all over the place. The developer was super-helpful giving me advice on how best to set up the app. The sound-level based automatic start is amazing. Tap the screen and Calypso waits for you to start playing before automatically tracking the score. If the conductor speeds up or slows down, you can use a Bluetooth pedal to ‘adjust’ the speed. It worked a treat!

It’s a sophisticated app, that is for sure. One of the main challenges I face is using the ‘repeat’ functionality, i.e. jumping back to a previous point in the score. If you jump back to a different point on the screen, it works well. Going back to a measure on the same place on the screen doesn’t work so well. However, the developer is so responsive that I know he is working on a solution. In the meantime, just double up the pages and get rid of the need to jump back.

Give it a go; make the effort to get your head around how it works. You will be rewarded by no longer faffing around turning pages or asking someone to help your and you will end up loving it like me.

As others have said, I have hunted high and low for similar apps. Nothing comes close.

### 1/5 — Unbelievably frustrating and unintuitive

*2022-04-01, version 6.4*

After using for several years I can safely say this software is excruciating to use, it feels like it has a kind of its own. It has cost me time and sooo much frustration to the point I’ve gone back to just using books.

### 5/5 — Calypso is great!

*2021-02-01, version 6.1*

I use this program all the time. I have books for all the bands I play with, Fakebooks (some of my own creation), and exercise books. With a 12.0” iPad I can read two pages in horizontal orientation very clearly. Sometimes I use Calypso’s built-in page turn feature, and sometimes I use a Bluetooth page turner.
The songbook and setlist features are perfect for how I organize my music, and they ability to search all the fakebooks for the songs I need is valuable. Wonderful program!

### 5/5 — Exactly what I needed to combine and index my fake books and other music sources.

*2020-05-15, version 5.5.2*

If you will spend some time reading the manual and are diligent about finding supported fake book pdf files you will be thoroughly rewarded.

You can access your fake books as one book with a live master index which updates each time you add another book.

If you have a pdf which is not pre-indexed you may create an index of your own for any pdf. So not only will Calypso Score let you add fake books you can also add your smaller song books and sheet music and add them to your master index.

If this weren’t enough you can also organize any song from any png image or pdf source into multiple songbooks and set lists.

You can even have it guide you through your score as you play with or without your own accompaniment or your favorite commercial version of each song.

Or you can also choose to use your favorite Bluetooth or midi foot switch to turn your pages.

Definitely the best music score app I own. It does the job of several others I have purchased and does them better.

This is the app to get!

### 5/5 — Wonderful app.

*2019-08-20, version 5.0.2*

I read about Calypso on the 'Scoring Notes' newsletter. Already having ForScore and Newzik, I was reluctant to spend £12 on yet another music reading app just to try it out - but I am very glad I did, because the page turning mechanism in this app is really remarkable, and a godsend for anyone wishing to play solo piano music on an iPad in portrait mode - thus seeing the music full size. It would also be a boon for organists, who play with their feet, and would be unable to use a Bluetooth pedal (although they might be limited by the fact that a lot of organ music is published in landscape format). I've not yet tried the app in collaborative music-making, but I am sure it would work well for music printed on three staves.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 7.7.3 — 2026-02-02

Our in-house engineers are still researching teleportation in sound space. Until we achieve a breakthrough, we’ve used the time to noticeably improve Calypso in several areas:

• YouTube asked you to log in if you wanted to watch the YouTube tutorials from Help. We have therefore ported the tutorials to Vimeo.
• Single-page landscape scores were not displayed when the iPad was in portrait orientation. Improved layout for single-page landscape scores
• The last songbook was displayed underneath the bottom toolbar
• PDF export is once again fully functional and has been optimized for minimal memory usage.
• Scanner filter settings now include an adaptive filter for better black-and-white image conversion.
• A rare issue with in-app purchases has been fixed.
• When opening Calypso with a file from the Mail or Files app, you should no longer see an “insufficient access rights” error.
• Minor improvements and a new clear button in the Image Composer now allow you to create a transparent background easily.
• more minor bug fixes

### 7.7.2 — 2025-11-18

The purchases were not displayed in the Calypso settings.

### 7.7.1 — 2025-11-15

There is an improvement in the auto-layout behavior: if the auto-layout is already showing parts of the next page, then this layout is retained even if you synchronize the spot by tapping a bar.

Important bug fixes
- Automatically hiding the toolbars now works reliably.
- Missing button for the note layout in song edit mode.
- YouTube reported an error with the tutorial videos in the Help. The new specifications from YouTube had to be implemented.
- Other small improvements

### 7.7 — 2025-09-10

- Adjustments for iOS 26, in particular the adaptation to the window size.
- Fixed minor bugs

### 7.6 — 2025-04-26

Improvements and extensions:
- The Calypso own scanner for creating PDFs with the camera is now equipped with filters
- Creating a set of songs with labels of the same color
- Annotations window revised
- More minor improvements

Fixed crashes:
- If the listener was active and you wanted to hide the song list and then activate the listener again, then Calypso crashed
- Rare crash in the annotations window remedied when switching from the color selector
