Probably needs an update? *2026-01-23* Lots of controls here to dial in exactly what you need. My only complaint and maybe why I don’t use it that often is that it feels like it could use an update. When trying to swipe up out of the app, it never really works perfectly. It’ll take me a few times to hop to another app. ### 4/5 — Awesome app, quick feedback *2025-09-01* This is an incredible idea for an app and could actually make me leave the film camera at home some days, or even indefinitely when traveling. Will be testing it out this week. Some immediate feedback: I would love to be able to choose the “focal length” for each shot. I only have 3 options now, ultra-wide - normal - tele. I’d love to pick like 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, etc. Second, the app crashes when I’m also saving raw files, and I click the camera roll in the top while the photos are still processing and loading. Will update the review as I shoot with it all this week on vacation! This isn’t the highest rated app but took the risk as it’s a one off payment with no in app purchase malarkey. Once installed WOW!!! Adore the interface really great to use and especially love the the photo gallery- awesome design!!! One issue I have however is that although I have ApplePro RAW switched on, it only seems to save jpgs which is a little frustrating as it would be good to play with the results in Lightroom (the only reason this isn’t 5 stars). Otherwise, great app! - phone used iPhone 13 Pro Max. **Developer response:** Hi, thank you for your review. To shoot in ProRAW make sure “Raw+HEIC” is selected in Camera1 settings, under “File format”, *and* “use ProRAW if available” is also selected. You should then have 2 files in your camera roll: one raw, one heic. Note that not all lenses support raw capture. If this doesn’t work, feel free to send an email using the “technical support” link in the settings. The design and execution is flawless. I am an avid black and white amateur photographer using film and I love the way this app helps me to pre-visualize the photo before I take it. I can’t recommend this app too highly! ### 5/5 — An exemplary camera app *2022-05-07* One wants a camera app to at least take good pictures and have a sensible, attractive user interface. Camera1 is all that, but “goes to 11.” Plus it gives you manual control over a number of parameters. You can simply point and shoot and get a sophisticated, artsy, filmy photo with great resolution. But with only a wee bit more attentiveness, you can tweak the focus, exposure, and contrast right on the main screen. The controls are big and hard to miss. The switch from tele to normal to wide is there, too. The UI is only two layers deep, so it’s easy to get at a variety of file types plus a great selection of aspect ratios. The virtual color filters are as true-to-analogue-life as they come. Genius. There are additional luxuries with this Porsche of iPhone camera apps. Your response time is enhanced by full-screen shutter. Icing on the cake for us control freaks is zebra-stripe exposure warnings, so you blow out your highs only if you want to. Specialized. Elegant. This is probably the worst camera app I have ever used. **Developer response:** Well, I’m sorry that happened. Did you read the description before buying ? It details all the features. Feel free to request a refund I suppose. ### 1/5 — No Support for Camera1 *2024-03-19* Camera1 might be a good app if it provided any guidance at all about how to use it. Maybe Its my bad, but I can’t discern just how Camera1 functions even basically to take pictures. I tried to contact Camera1 through what appeared to be a “connect” function within the app, but have never gotten a reply, or an acknowledgement of my message; should I assumed my message was either not received; or even ignored; who knows. In either case. It still look s like a cool app, something I would like to try out. But alas , I guess I’ll never know, and my $5.99 for the app will never be refunded. The camera user interface is in landscape - as most hardware cameras, your eyes, and as written in the description. Wasted money. ### 2/5 — No film simulation? *2026-08-16* The app is relatively easy to use. It has manual aperture and focus controls but the lock function is really confusing. It actually doesn’t seem to work for aperture. If I click lock and change the slider nothing happens. But what’s a killer is that it has no film simulation. I’m a long time b/w film photographer and switched over to the Fuji X1 series for b/w photography. Their film grain is excellent. Was hoping for an app which gives me this. So far Halide is excellent but $20 per year so no thank you. The search continues. ### 2/5 — No Zoom - Limits Usefulness *2025-03-16* While this app offers a decent experience, the absence of pinch-to-zoom for focal distance adjustment is a significant drawback. Instead, it operates with three fixed focal lengths, which feels restrictive compared to the standard zoom lens functionality we’re accustomed to. I understand the developer’s intent, but this design choice severely impacts the app’s usability and enjoyment. For this reason, I cannot recommend this app. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — A very handy camera app *2026-07-24* The standard Apple camera app will take black and white photos, so why bother with Camera1? Two reasons: 1. It’s just really handy to have a dedicated black and white camera app. No fiddling with settings, it’s just ready to go. 2. Camera1 has a great range of pre-set photo sizes, especially the really wide one. So again, simple to use. I have this app installed on my iPhone and both iPads. It can be a steep learning curve. This photo app lets you go through the process step by step and allows you to see the results on screen. You can make beautiful photos with a camera that you always have with you. The color correction/contrast filters make the images “pop.” No other black and white app, and no Color to B/W conversion method works as well as Camera1. Try the Red filter on a blue sky with puffy white clouds and you’ll capture a dramatic sky and cloud image… superb, impactful and unbeatable! The “pinch to change” lenses function is nowhere to be found on the user interface… you just have to know it’s the way to change focal lengths (assuming your device has multiple lenses). ### 5/5 — I just really like this app… *2025-01-20, version 2.9.0* I realise that you can take black and white photos with the Apple and other cameras. But Camera1 just makes it so much easier - just select the app rather than fiddling with settings in another app. Camera1 also has a great selection of preset photo sizes. I find it odd that other camera apps have not copied this UI, it’s a real time saver and photo enhancer. I very much recommend this app! It’s many features and capabilities more than meet the expectations of advanced photographers, as well as being an app beginners can grow into as they expand their capabilities. Camera 1 takes me back to the good old days of Tri X 35mm photography.
