It definitely blocks sites effectively. However, after a year of use I could no longer tolerate most regular sites taking forever to open, some not at all. Despite a very fast home network speed, using canopy made my experience more akin to the early days of dial up speeds. I would wait up to a full minute sometimes for webpages to finish loading, that should have taken a fraction of a second. Apparently the use of AI to scan the pages is effective, but SLOW. It’s a major flaw in their whole system and doesn’t appear that there are any plans to change this. I see the developer responded but this is likely for show. I had multiple conversations with support staff about this, and the consensus was that slow speed was the trade off for this type of protection. ### 3/5 — Inconsistent *2026-06-26, version 4.73.12* I have it installed on multiple devices and it blocks what it’s not supposed to, even when you turn off protection on a device completely. I believe this is because of the VPN connection that is permanent, regardless of having protection on or off. When I removed the client app from my son’s phone, I am now unable to install any other MDM software due to the Canopy somehow running in the background (despite the fact that I deleted the app AND the Canopy MDM). The program is great but the app has so many issues. It doesn’t open half the time and I get a plain white screen. The location doesn’t update like it should and I constantly have issues. My son started at a new school, and Canopy is preventing all internet access. I tried overriding it temporarily to test if that fixed the problem, and the AI bot said “no.” When I explained that I was the Father and owner of the account, it still said no. Ridiculous. ### 1/5 — Prevented Normal Tasks *2026-08-17, version 4.73.12* Good idea, poor execution. Maybe it works better for others, but Canopy has prevented me from doing normal tasks on my Macbook, like using the internet for pretty much anything. This is even after messing with the settings to the best of my abilities. App kept freezing during setup (on an iPhone 14 Pro Max) so had to keep refreshing it. After that I tried to change one of the categories to enhanced filtering instead of fully blocked but the option is greyed out. When I went to use the “customer support” you get I realised it’s just a chatbot that continually gave me “A problem on our end occurred” error messages and was never able to answer my question regarding how to fix the greyed out options. ### 1/5 — Use caution *2026-07-29, version 4.73.12* I canceled my subscription during the trial and they still charged me for the subscription. I’m currently fighting this transaction with them as they have been very slow to resolve this issue. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Ease of use improved greatly with AI agent *2026-06-01, version 4.73.12* Canopy has greatly improved its usability with the new integrated AI agent which provides helpful guidance and can even program in custom filtering rules for specific domains or pages with a bulk text entry saving time and effort. Canopy isn’t a perfect system and most of the user complaints arise because of difficulties setting it up and canopy being over aggressive on some sites while letting some content slip through on image searches. The AI support agent is helpful even on really technical points and anything it cannot help with is passed onto a real person along with the important information. Now we can have our minds at ease that it keeps them safe from anything nasty online. Also the time limit indicators are very helpful to keep everyone accountable! It filters just the right amount and is easy to adjust or temporarily pause, if needed. It doesn’t slow down our devices, which was a must for us! I love that we can shut down access to the internet and have off hours where kids have limited access online. We also were able to give our son a smartphone and limit his access to the internet/apps giving us peace of mind when he isn’t at home with us monitoring his screen activity. We have tried other parental control apps and this one is by far the best and easiest to use. Update Jan 2026: we are still using the app and Canopy for our family and still very pleased. Canopy is always updating and adding more features which come from feedback they are always asking for especially on smartphones and devices.
