## What is CaptionNow 廣東話即時字幕・語音轉文字?

A real-time speech-to-text tool built around two things: accuracy and low latency.

The developer is hard of hearing, and couldn't find a single app that handled Hong Kong Cantonese properly — the code-switching between Chinese and English, the technical terminology — while staying accurate and returning results instantly. So this one got built. Every decision in it comes from what actually holds up in daily use, not from a feature checklist.

Live transcript — Text appears as you speak. No waiting for the sentence to finish.

Captions for audio playing on your phone — Not just the microphone. Video calls, videos, and podcasts get transcribed too, which most comparable tools can't do.

Floating captions — Picture-in-Picture keeps captions on screen while you use other apps.

You pick the language; it doesn't guess — Mandarin (Taiwan / Mainland), Hong Kong Cantonese including Chinese-English code-switching, and English (US / UK / India / Hong Kong). Once you choose, it stays there — no drifting between languages mid-sentence.

Offline recognition — Download a language pack on iOS 26 or later and it works without a network connection.

Built for long reading sessions — No decorative clutter. Comfortable to watch through an entire lecture.

Specifications

This is transcription, not translation. What goes in is what comes out — with one exception: spoken Cantonese is transcribed into standard written Chinese, with English terms kept inline as spoken.

Online mode uses a cloud recognition engine. Offline mode requires iOS 26 or later.

Real examples of recognition errors are welcome — they're the most effective way to improve accuracy right now.

Bug fixes

• Monthly subscription: starting August 15, a backend fault let purchases go through without unlocking the paid features. This is fixed. Affected accounts have been repaired, with 1 hour of cloud model time added as compensation. If we missed your account, please tell us through Feedback.
• Restore Subscription now shows progress and tells you the result. One invalid receipt no longer hides an active subscription behind it.
• Silence auto-stop now works with the Apple on-device model.
• The Feedback list now says when it failed to load, instead of showing an empty list.
• Corrected wording in several places. The Plus page now states that speaker identification works on the cloud model only.

New

• Transcripts are kept on this device. Save now stores the transcript instead of opening a share sheet, and a recording is saved automatically when it ends. Open More ▸ Transcripts to read one in full or export it as a text file. Saving is a Plus feature; exporting a transcript you already have is not.
• Every model states its limits before you pick it. The on-device model loses accuracy in a noisy room, and takes a few seconds to load each time you start. The cloud model needs a network connection. The waiting screen now says which of the two waits you are in.
• A guided tour for new users. Six pages on the one thing the app never explained: it can caption the room around you, or the audio playing on your phone. Replay it any time from Settings ▸ How to use.
• The History button on the control bar is now called Usage, so it is no longer confused with Transcripts.
