### 2/5 — Needs a major overhaul

*2026-01-18*

I installed my head unit in 06/24 and installed Pioneer’s CarAV Assist. The app is problematic. In fact, after reading the manual, I can perform many of the features with the exception of accessing the web without the app. I can apply wallpaper of my choice, change orientation of widgets/ icons. I can update my firmware. The browser is slow and missing components that other browsers have by default. Since I don’t have the app installed, I can actually enjoy my stereo. The question for pioneer is, why hasn’t an update been released?

### 2/5 — App Not Good

*2025-11-18, version 2.0.3*

This app works when it wants to work even with 3.08 update says it’s not connected when clearly it’s connected.

Developers do what you love to do and that’s make apps that you can be proud of not just some get by app.

### 1/5 — The worst

*2025-10-01, version 2.0.3*

This app is so bad I will literally pay someone $300 for a subscription to create a version that will actually work for everyone with Pioneer. You will have many many other customers as well in fact everyone that owns a pioneer head unit.

OK I’ll up the anti and personally give someone $500 to actually fix this pioneer shaming app.

OK for even $500 nobody could fix this app. Thankfully I have a good deal of money and I had to go by an android phone just to use my $800 pioneer deck. If you have an iPhone and you don’t have the money to also have an active android phone that you use only for music I wouldn’t buy pioneer.

### 1/5 — Useless

*2025-09-01, version 2.0.3*

This app can’t even transfer new firmware onto the receiver. Funny thing, it’s equally useless on an Android phone as well. Pioneer software engineers can’t develop a simple utility for their $600+ units.

### 1/5 — Not much flexibility and picky connecting

*2025-08-14, version 2.0.3*

The app and avassist seem like they were written a decade ago, clumsy and not so intuitive. I was wanting to do a firmware upgrade through my phone and hotspot. No go. My pioneer says no devices connected yet Apple play works fine. The message always appears about 3 minutes to 5 min (never really timed it). I urge the developers to update this mess please. I have tried so many times to do a firmware update without success. Terrible app, my last pioneer product.

### 1/5 — Lucky if you can get it to connect

*2025-08-05, version 2.0.3*

I tell you that your Bluetooth is not connected even when it is. Through some accident I got connect once but couldn’t get it to do anything.

### 1/5 — FLicking useless app

*2025-07-16, version 2.0.3*

won’t connect to the headunit to update firmware.

### 1/5 — Annoying as can be

*2025-06-07, version 2.0.3*

I want to actually enjoy my supposed 750$ head unit(4660 series) don’t try to update it tho because you’re gonna want to jump. It boggles my mind how a simple update can be soo frustrating. It’s 2025 and here we are with this terrible system to fulfill a simple task. You know exactly what I’m talking about if you read the other reviews. I’m just gonna come out and say the same thing.

### 1/5 — Can’t update firmware

*2025-05-01, version 2.0.3*

Updating the firmware via receiver internet access or via the phone hot spot won’t work. I keep getting an error that the phone isn’t connected. My phone shows that the hotspot is connected and Bluetooth is also connected.

### 1/5 — Firmware Update Broken

*2025-03-08, version 2.0.3*

Can no longer update firmware. Via app or USB nothing works. Pioneer won’t update the app and firmware regularly to prevent issues with newer IOS versions. So annoyed.

### 1/5 — The worst

This app is so bad I will literally pay someone $300 for a subscription to create a version that will actually work for everyone with Pioneer. You will have many many other customers as well in fact everyone that owns a pioneer head unit.

### 2/5 — Can’t update via phone

*2025-02-16, version 2.0.3*

There has been about 3 phone updates since the last app update. Can’t use phone to update software . It’s pretty annoying . Do better pioneer.

### 1/5 — Worst interface and connection

*2025-01-14*

I normally do not take time to write reviews. But this interface is so terrible and the connection is so disgusting that I had to write something to warn others. This interface seems to lose Bluetooth connectivity when you change from one screen to the next. The set up routine to try to get updates and firmware upgrades is absolute garbage. I’m actually taking this back for the third time to the installer because the Pioneer branded connection plate plates to fit inside my vehicle. keep rattling apart and falling off. It goes to show that Pioneer just does not have the quality that used to many years back.

### 2/5 — Oh boy!!! I cant wait to sit here for close to an hour to transfer a firmware update!

*2025-01-08, version 2.0.3*

Oh boy! Another firmware update! I can’t wait to sit here for close to over an hour as it errors out transferring the update to the receiver as it will repeatedly tell me what I need to do to connect wifi hotspot… blah blah blah…..

Im CONNECTED, YOU INCOMPETENT SOFTWARE PROGRAMMERS, as your own product tells me “Im connected” yet will sit here for bear over an hour as your tradh firmware update errors out and errors out and errors out.

### 2/5 — Difficult to use

*2025-01-07, version 2.0.3*

I spend quite a bit of time until I got it working properly. To do the firmware update was a real pain. It is a shame that Pioneer does not find a user friendly way to use this tool. It also advisable to once you have do whatever the head unit require, you better to disable the app. If not it keeps making your experience painful as it keeps trying to connect to the HU and interfere with Apple Car Play.
I always used Kenwood before, bought this unit because the salesman said that it was the better for Apple Car Play.
I am very disappointed.

### 1/5 — Linking is terrible

*2024-12-15, version 2.0.3*

I just used this app to update my DMH-WT3800NEX. It was a chore! I followed all the instructions on the app for it to connect for the update and it would just hang up while trying to transfer the update from phone to head unit.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — CarAVAssist

*2026-06-26, version 2.0.3*

This app needs updated. It’s been over 2 years since this app was updated. It could possibly be a security risk. Think twice before buying a Pioneer car stereo. They don’t seem to care about security vulnerabilities

### 1/5 — Doesn’t Work

*2026-05-09, version 2.0.3*

Follow all the steps and it will tell you firmware update connection error and to connect your phone despite showing it’s connected. POS app.

### 1/5 — Firmware update nightmare

*2026-03-22, version 2.0.3*

Tried for a solid 2 hours to do firmware update via app. Despite many attempts of various configs - I did not succeed.

Also for whatever reason the USB update doesn’t work either. Possibly the usb cable connected to the deck is just power only, so I’ll spend a Saturday fishing out the usb cable from the back of the unit and see if that will do it.

Main reason I’m trying to update is wireless car play has been spotty recently - hoping an update will fix it, but now losing confidence

### 1/5 — iPhone software app

*2026-02-12, version 2.0.3*

This has got to be the worst app out there. The whole idea of buying a nice head unit is to get some of the extras that are part of a nice head unit. You expect a published app by the company that make the head unit to work and be easy to use. I’m not a stupid guy but this software really sucks and is hard to use. Pioneer you need to release an app the the majority of people who don’t have a degree in computer engineering can use. Use terms in your app that make what is shown in the phones that you the app. Nowhere in my iPhone does the term ‘low energy Bluetooth’ strick out at me. If it’s there then tell the people where it is or what it’s called. Until Pioneer gets their act together I would run away from this company as fast as you can. They only seem to care about the bottom line. Eventually that will catch up with them.

### 1/5 — Nightmare

*2026-01-11, version 2.0.3*

The connection takes forever and the app continuously pops up on my phone. I can’t find another option to use CarPlay.

### 1/5 — Not User Friendly

*2026-01-06, version 2.0.3*

I followed every instruction step by step to update my software and this app just does not work.

### 1/5 — Junk App

*2025-12-30, version 2.0.3*

Nightmare to update car receiver firmware

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Says not connected can’t update firmware

*2024-06-15, version 2.0.2*

WiFi connected on hotspot tells me it’s not. Fix your app.

### 5/5 — Looks good but I like it

*2023-11-11, version 2.0.2*

I played little alchemy there for to create combinations!! It was definitely fun to play in the browser favorites and it was good!

### 5/5 — Works

*2023-02-27*

I don’t really have any problems with the app. Everything worked so far.
Only nitpick is that the back button is called "Top" which might be a bit confusing.

### 5/5 — CarAVAssist

*2022-10-16, version 1.2.1*

This app needs up to date firmware on the Pioneer unit. That is best done with the USB port. This app connects consistently when my Hotspot won’t . Open the app when you get in the car. It works very well to customize the unit. When my pioneer unit had the proper firmware this app worked very well.

### 5/5 — DMH-Z6380TV

*2021-04-11*

Rápido e fácil app. Atualizei o aparelho DMH-Z6380TV pra versão 1.31 via carAVAssist.

### 5/5 — Not as complicated as the other reviews make it out to be

*2021-03-06, version 1.0.8*

If you take the time to read the directions and the getting started guide within the app, it’s relatively simple to use and it does what it says it will do. It’s not the greatest app nor is the most intuitive, but it’s not rocket science.

### 5/5 — It actually works and has nice features, but poor instructions

*2020-11-22*

I finally figured this out and hit many of the similar problems described in these reviews. I just don’t understand what all the the phone connection options are but figured it out for the iPhone finally. You use the iPhone hotspot feature. In the head unit, you will connect using the WiFi hotspot tool, and set it up to connect to your phone. Next open the CarAVAssist on both devices. It should be able to connect on the phone app once you are connected to the head unit using the WiFi hotspot. Then make your changes using the phone app. Then hit the phone-to-unit transfer button on the head unit. This actually initiates the transfer from the phone app to the head unit. The transfer should occur, and you can (and maybe should) also change the screens on the head unit while this occurs. This seems to help make the transfer happen, perhaps because it’s on the screen where the images would be that you loaded on your phone. The head unit is looking for differences. Anyway, it works and I like all of the features. If they made it so all of this could be done with the head unit itself, then it would be a lot more expensive. So I have no complaints. It was a challenge to learn but it happens. Hope this helps.

### 4/5 — Good

*2024-03-10, version 2.0.2*

Works fine for me, everyone else that can’t figure out how to use this app and gave this a 1 star rating are just dumb.

### 4/5 — Works but directions are hard to follow

*2023-11-06*

My new DMH-W4660NEX was very glitchy using navigation apps through Apple CarPlay. The reason I bought the receiver was to use the large screen for navigation apps. I checked the pioneer website and determined that my firmware was out of date. Hoping that a firmware update would fix the glitchy navigation apps, I wanted to install the update. The unit was already installed in the car so it was not desirable to pull the unit out and install the update through the USB method. I read that with the carAvassist you could install an update wirelessly through your phone. Well turns out you can but it took me an early three hours to get that done. The prompts and instructions are very unclear. I am of average tech savvy, and I found it very difficult. If they could improve theinstructions this might be a really really good app. I have to wait and see whether the update fix the navigation glitches.
