## What is CarbonCruise?

CarbonCruise allows you to collect high-quality tree data under the forest canopy using your iPhone. This app replaces manual fieldwork methods with a digital workflow, allowing you to easily capture tree diameter, height, carbon, location, and species, no additional tools required.

At this time, CarbonCruise supports plot data collection for a 400m^2 fixed radius plot.

Key features:
• Digital Fieldwork: Replace manual tools with your mobile device to collect plot data faster.
• LiDAR Measurement: Easily measure tree diameter and height using the iPhone’s built-in LiDAR scanner and/or camera.
• Offline Capability: Work offline in remote areas and save data directly to your device. Sync to the cloud when you are back online for further reporting and analysis.
• Custom Notes: Log specific details and field conditions for any tree or plot.
• Quick Measure: Determine the diameter or height of a tree in seconds if you want a quick analysis without performing full plot data collection.

How it works:
• Create a Plot: Enter your plot’s name and location. The app will generate a map showing your position within the boundaries of the 400m2 fixed radius plot.
• Measure: Choose a tree and use the on-screen guides to capture its diameter and height.
• Add Details: Input species information and any additional notes about the tree or plot.
• Sync & Analyze: Once your plot is complete, sync the data to the cloud for reporting and further analysis.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.3 — 2026-09-11

• Added options to download areas of interest on a map and view detailed plot maps of downloaded areas while offline.
• Adjusted tree height calculations to account for sloped terrain, allowing users to accurately measure the height of trees grown on hills.
• Added a “Sync” button to the Home Screen for users to sync their data between local and cloud versions. Users can now view data of any plot, whether saved locally or on the cloud, while offline.

### 2.2 — 2026-07-29

• Added support for iPad Pro models with LiDAR sensors.
• Users can save quick individual tree measurements and upload them directly to the server.
• Users can now view online street maps for completed plots whenever there is an internet connection.
• The app now displays all calculation numbers at the final step of tree height measurement for better transparency.
• The app shows on-screen guidance reminding users to step back until the full tree is visible on the device screen before measuring tree height.
• Users can confirm tree height before saving to prevent accidental entries.
• Updated the compass icon on the New Plot screen for improved clarity.
• Adjusted map layers so the user cursor is consistently displayed above tree icons on the plot map.
• Exported plot CSV files are now automatically named using the corresponding plot name.
• Fixed an issue where tree icons obscured other map elements while zooming in.

### 2.1 — 2026-06-25

Changes:
• The CSV file for plots includes new columns (UTM Zone, UTM Easting (m), UTM Northing (m)) for viewing the location of any tree in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) format.
• The CSV file for plots also includes a new column (Within Plot) for determining whether a tree is within the boundaries of the plot.
• While online, users can use the mobile app to edit plot latitude/longitude, tree latitude/longitude, and tree notes for a completed plot.
• The mobile app now shows an error message if the phone’s camera permissions are denied, as the app requires access to the camera to estimate tree metrics.
• Plot category labels on the Home screen have been updated to specify where plots are saved.
• The Plot Start screen includes a help icon which users can press to display instructions for setting the device compass to point to True North instead of Magnetic North.

### 2.0 — 2026-05-28

• When developer mode is enabled on the mobile app, users can view additional values used to calculate tree height on the Plot Summary screen.
• Users can access the CarbonCruise user guide directly from the web app.
• The web app now includes additional details for each plot, including the plot size and total number of trees.

### 1.9 — 2026-04-29

• Any iPhone with iOS version 17.0 or above can now use CarbonCruise to collect plot data and start measuring tree diameter, height, and location. No LiDAR sensor required!
• Users can now use pinch-to-zoom gestures to adjust the camera view while measuring tree height.
• Added a “Low Battery” warning to users when they start a new plot while their phone battery is less than 50%.
• Added additional guidance for users who try to delete their account while a subscription is still active.
• Users will receive a welcome email sent to their inbox after creating a new account.
• The overall font size used throughout the app has been increased, allowing users to easily read instructions on the screen.
• On the New Plot screen, users can enter a negative sign when specifying the plot’s centre latitude or longitude
• On the Measure Diameter screen, users can toggle “Show auto-detect edge lines” to show or hide tree edge line previews when using the Auto DBH measurement mode (available only to iPhones with a LiDAR sensor at this time)
