**Developer response:** In the end of Rabaul, only CV Saratoga and Princeton did strike Rabaul. Other carriers are just extra stuff.

In Hailstone, separate out forces between the Kwajalein, Eniwetok and a carrier raid on Truk

### 5/5 — Solid Purchase

*2025-12-08*

Had the original app for years, upgraded to the new version and bought most of the expansions. Fantastic game. Great throwback to the hex and counter war games of the the 80s.

### 5/5 — why

*2025-12-05*

**Developer response:** Something related to in-app purchases. A path is under way. Thanks for your patience.

**Developer response:** I wish the game could be updated more frequently too. (Philippine Sea scenario is in beta on Steam). But development time is shared across Napoleon's Eagles and No Retreat! The Russian Front.
Napoleon's Eagles is now in Chinese eventough the store page is not yet translated

### 5/5 — Fun but

*2025-08-10*

A very fun game, like an update of the old Carriers at War game but better in some cases, especially with the sea planes. But combat numbers and results are bad.. it treats 1942 like 1945.. the Zero is barely better than the P-39, IJN pilots in 1942 can’t hit anything, USN torpedo bombers in 1942 are snipers…. There should be a fix to this or at least an editor where we can put our own numbers. Probably need to make all combat based on 1-10 or 1-20 not 1-3.. need more variance. Pilot experience should also be important..that’s the big difference in the arc of the air war in particular.

**Developer response:** Japanese A6M is the best fighter in 1942 in air-to-air value. It has also a great range.
It remains vulnerable as lacking of armor and self-sealing tanks.

Normally, it you exploit the range advantage of the Kudo Butai, you should be a formidable foe in 42.

Pilot may come with next scenario (Philippine Sea) as a penalty for the Japanese as they hadn't trained enough pilots for a war of attrition.

### 5/5 — Possibly the best ever! Have suggestions

*2025-07-22*

First edit:Not to want to ask too much, but here is an idea, developers: 1945 battles. Probably make most of them an extra. (great to gain money!)You do not have to, just an idea. Probably another fighter for the Japanese, after a while, even the zero may even become obsolete. But, another thing: when you face big waves of attacks, carriers can be easy to sink. Can you make them more tough? Also, Leyte gulf is a good one. Japanese reverted to crashing their planes into ships. Finally, I ask for a bug fix. I get kicked out every once in a while. Thanks for reading! First review: I played carrier battles 4 Guadalcanal and this game tops the rest.. great graphics and gameplay, lifelike “ action-to-consequence”! I had some suggestions for the game, like The Battle of the Philippine sea, which Americans had air superiority. I look forward to future updates, can’t wait to see what is next!

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback.
You are right, the next scenario will occur in the Philippine Sea !

1945 are just one sided because there is no more Japanese Navy !

### 4/5 — Exactly what I was looking for

*2024-10-15*

It replicates the low information decision making officers had to make pretty well.

I wish there were random maps available for infinite playability! I would pay for that feature.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Game crashes now.

*2025-12-06*

As of today, 6Dec2025, the game crashes immediately after launch. I’ve deleted it, updated my iOS, soft reset my iPad, redownloaded the game and it still crashes.

### 1/5 — Will not play

*2023-08-03*

Between the app updates and iOS updates this game has become unplayable. The game board jumps around, pieces will not move or snap back to previous position. Was very stable before the recent updates.

**Developer response:** Check the latest patch (1.11.10) which fixes a shift in hex cell on the SWPAcific map, along with some balancing for the Indian Ocean Raid scenario.

### 1/5 — Trop de bugs

*2022-09-14*

Merci

### 3/5 — Crashes

*2025-12-08*

One of my favorite mobile games, but it crashes every time I try to open it on my phone

**Developer response:** Patch 1.14.4 fixed the crash. Thanks for you patience.

### 4/5 — Fleet merge gets disappeared

*2025-12-24*

I tired to merge my fleets and sometimes my ships got disappeared and will not reappear in the game, I think this bug needs to be fixed, thank you

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Review and suggestions.

*2026-04-05*

I’ve been playing the game for a couple years and am a huge fan. Even if some mechanics are difficult to master it is fairly easy to get into. Some suggestions I have are an option to include the 3 Unryu class carriers as options for Philippine Sea as Shinano is already an option and was completed after them. I would also suggest a what if option for the scenario that gives certain Japanese carriers A7M fighters, similar to the one for B7A bombers. Lastly, I think it would be cool if midway had a no coral sea option like Operation FS does, adding Shokaku, Zuikaku, and Shoho to the Japanese, and Lexington to the US, along with having Yorktown keep her fully airwing if you select the Saratoga option

### 5/5 — Maravilloso Wargame

*2026-03-04, version 1.14.17*

### 5/5 — The Ultimate Carrier Strategy Game is Here!

*2026-03-01*

Following in the tradition of classic boardgames like “Flattop”, Carrier Battles has finally made it possible to properly simulate carrier warfare in the Pacific. Although the computer certainly makes things a lot easier to play than the old hex-counter wargames, there’s still quite a bit to learn, but after a certain point the game is tunable to the level of detail and control you wish to manage.

As a suggestion, most folks prefer to learn more by “doing” than by choking down documentation. In that vein, I think the game could be made more accessible—and more fun—for beginners and veterans alike by expanding the variety of Tutorials to include truly replayable mini-scenarios that not only isolate particular skills and mechanics, but can also be tuned, randomized, or even played competitively, opening up options for players looking for getting a “quick fix” of Pacific naval warfare in a short amount of time.

Example mini-games: for Search, a race against time to try and spot enemy carriers before they spot you. For Strike, a standoff between two airfields, trying to destroy more airplanes than they lose. Then perhaps a surface-to-suface scenario, trying to bring transports to engagement while avoiding an intercepting fleet. Next up, maybe a “Tokyo Express” scenario where the player must rush in to either land supplies on or bombard an airfield then get back to cover before daylight. For full mini-games, trying close and sink a carrier using only surface task forces (playable from either side) or even just a one vs one carrier duel.

As another thought, the list of Tutorials can be made shorter by having optional elements on each that users can select to set complexity or difficulty to their liking. In the airfield vs airfield idea, for example, there might an option to add surface ships trying to to bombard or land transports on the enemy field—much like the first (repulsed) Japanese attempt to land on Wake Island. Other features can have their own Tutorials too: subs, cruiser search planes, etc etc.

Regarding tunability, I wonder if perhaps even historical scenarios can be made less complex by adding an option to delegate certain forces to AI management?

Also, regarding randomization, maybe the game could benefit from a very basic scenario creation capability - even if it’s nothing more than a little tunability for the above-mentioned Tutorials. Nothing fancy: players choose the month, the map, and maybe the type of mission, then checkboxes that set the probability of various ships or bases being there. To keep things simple, the loadouts for these ships and bases can be predetermined based on the year and month selected: even starting locations can even be predetermined to make things even simpler - perhaps you might limit players only to variations on existing scenarios.

All in all, Carrier Battles is a truly great game!

**Developer response:** Thanks for this lovely review, the first of 2022 !
What do you mean by "stack vs single unit mode is not quite there" ? You still have the choice to move air units by unit, stack or variable count

### 5/5 — The Ultimate Carrier Strategy Game is Here!

*2026-02-25*

Following in the tradition of classic games like “Flattop”, this game has finally made it possible to properly simulate carrier warfare in the Pacific. Although the computer certainly makes things a lot easier to play than the old hex-counter wargames, there’s still quite a bit to learn, but after a certain point the game is tunable to the level of detail and control you wish to manage.

In regards to learning, I humbly suggest most people learn best by “doing” rather than trying to choke down endless documentation: in other words, I think the game could be made a LOT more accessible with a much wider variety of Tutorials: not just demonstrations of particular skills, but fully playable mini-scenarios, limited in scope, that can be tuned, randomized, or even played competitively, especially for players looking for getting a “quick fix” of Pacific warfare in a very limited time.

Some ideas for Tutorials: for learning search, an airfield trying to spot transports closing in. For strike management, perhaps a standoff between two airfields, each trying to inflict a certain number of losses on each other. Another tutorial might be solely surface ships, trying to spot then bring another task force to a surface engagement. Next up, perhaps a “Tokyo Express” scenario where the player must attempt to land supplies on or bombard a critical airfield before daylight. To learn carrier operations, perhaps a single carrier trying to spot mulitple surface ships trying to close in, then perhaps a 1v1 carrier duel. As players gain mastery, additional elements steadily increase complexity: the airfield vs airfield idea can be elaborated to reducing an airfield’s capability enough to land transports (much like the first Japanese attempt to invade Wake Island). Other features can have their own Tutorials too: subs, cruiser search planes, etc etc. Finally, even full scenarios can be made more manageable if there was an option to delegate certain forces to the AI for management.

Regarding randomization, I think the game could benefit from a very basic scenario creation capability - even if it’s nothing more than a little tunability for the above-mentioned Tutorials.

I hope these suggesions are not overwhelming, and thanks for the great game!

*2026-01-16*

**Developer response:** Fixed with version 1.12.7

### 5/5 — Worth your time

*2025-12-22*

The game is perfect. When first entering the game it might feel overwhelming with all the control. But after a few games you will quickly get a grip of it. My only question is what does the extra dlcs really do. A more detailed description would be much appreciated, such as what dos each dlc bring to the game.

### 5/5 — The BEST Digital Hex Game

*2025-12-21*

I have been playing Carrier Battles since the old version, before this one came out. Hands down the best hex style game out there. I grew up playing hex style board games. Being able to play a game like this on an iPad is convenient. It’s better than pulling out the table leafs, spending time setting up a board and being exhausted before the first dice roll. Also being able to have a game while traveling is great aswell.

Sure, at times there are bugs but it’s typically fixed in an expeditious manner. I have great respect for the effort this developer has put into this game and all the updates. I can’t recommend this game enough, it is worth every penny I’ve paid.

### 5/5 — Game crashes now. Fixed.

*2025-12-10*

As of today, 6Dec2025, the game crashes immediately after launch. I’ve deleted it, updated my iOS, soft reset my iPad, redownloaded the game and it still crashes.
Edit, new patch fixed the issue. Back to being the best iOS WW2 naval game.

**Developer response:** Thanks for your patience, have a nice game !
