## What is Categories Learning Center?

Build stronger vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking through interactive categorization practice.

Developed by certified Speech-Language Pathologists, Categories Learning Center is a multi-level, multi-player app designed to strengthen language comprehension and organization skills for learners of all ages. Categorization is a foundational cognitive and linguistic skill that supports word retrieval, memory, and reading comprehension.

Rooted in research on language development and processing, Categories Learning Center provides fun, structured practice in identifying, grouping, and labeling objects based on shared features. These skills are essential for forming semantic networks that aid expressive language, reading, and writing. Children and adults alike can benefit—whether developing new vocabulary or improving word-finding and comprehension skills.

Why Categorization Matters
Being able to identify how words and objects relate helps learners store and retrieve information more effectively. Research shows that poor categorization skills can impact comprehension, vocabulary, and communication (Partyka & Kresheck, 1983; Semel, Wiig, & Secord, 2003; Richard & Hanner, 2005). Categories Learning Center helps strengthen these essential connections through engaging, evidence-based activities.

Use Categories Learning Center to:
• Teach how to sort objects that belong to the same category
• Expand receptive and expressive vocabulary through visual learning
• Improve word-finding and semantic organization
• Reinforce reading comprehension through category-based learning
• Track and measure progress with session-by-session performance reports

Activities Include:
• Receptive (Non-Verbal) Activities
	•	Level 1: Sorting dissimilar objects
	•	Level 2: Sorting similar objects
	•	Where Does It Go?: Placing an object into one of three category options

• Expressive Activities
	•	Category Naming: Provide the correct category name for a group of objects
	•	Category Selection: Identify which of four category names fits a group of objects
	•	Extended Practice: Name additional items within each category to strengthen recall

App Features:
• Multi-player mode – up to 4 users at once
• Multiple levels of difficulty to support skill progression
• Customizable receptive activities with 2 or 3 category choices
• Automatic progress tracking and data reporting
• Reports that can be emailed, printed, or stored for future reference

Categories Learning Center combines clinical expertise with engaging technology to make therapy and learning both effective and enjoyable. Whether used in schools, therapy sessions, or at home, this app provides a powerful tool for improving comprehension, organization, and expressive language skills.

### 5/5 — SLP

*2019-05-01*

This app is great if you're working on categories. I have a lot of students that need extra help with this goal. This app is definitely a go-to when I am targeting this goal.

### 4/5 — Motivating app for categories

*2019-04-30*

I recently added this app to my collection for targeting categories and it has been successful. One particular student is especially motivated to practice now. The images are a little small, but this app has been great so far for data collection and motivating my students.

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2019-04-29*

This is the only app I use when working on categories. I like how it has different levels and that it’s a multiplayer app. For some of my students that are a little higher, I have them tell my why items go together and what makes them different. My students enjoy using this app, and so do I!

### 5/5 — Great for Learning and Fun!

*2019-04-11*

This app is wonderful! I love how great it is when students are learning categories! Most students find it so motivating! I have even used it at the end of a session for motivating good work! The students don’t even know they're learning!

### 4/5 — Great for autism

*2015-10-20, version 2.0*

Great for receptive language for kids with autism or language impaired kids with limited verbal output.

### 4/5 — Very Nice :)

*2013-10-12*

Excellent App for working on not only categorization skills, but both expressive and receptive language skills. There is so much you can do with this app. I have also used it with a few of my adult clients who have aphasia.

### 5/5 — Kristen Nelson

*2013-08-25*

This is a great app for categorization, a critical skill for vocabulary development. I would like to see the functions of items added. There are a variety of receptive and expressive tasks. Easy record keeping!

### 4/5 — Focused on Categories, but great for ALL Language!

*2013-08-24*

This is a great tool to work on categories with my students who are older, with special needs. These students love the motivation and the sorting into various categories. This is a great tool working on expressive and receptive language as well. The user has the opportunity to sort items into their specific categories, but if you want to work on identifying vocabulary/labeling items, this app works on that, too! The data tracking component is an obvious plus for those of us who spend our lives focused on progress! :) Great tool, Smarty Ears!

### 1/5 — App Crashes!

*2013-05-09, version 1.2*

This app would be great if it worked; you can only get through 2 or three trials before it freezes and has to be restarted; developers please fix this issue as this was not a cheap app.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2013-01-06*

I am an SLP who works with students with significant language delays. This works well because I can work on both receptive and expressive vocabulary. They work hard but have fun too!
