Since the last release every notification has a dozen duplicates that all hit my phone at the same time. It’s so awful I had to shut off notifications. On top of that - since the last software update was pushed to the CatGenie it perpetually states that the light guide needs to be cleaned no matter what action you take (pull it apart for a thorough cleaning, extra cycles, replacing the light guide etc.). It also doesn’t prevent it from running which indicates a programming issue. Please do better CatGenie! ### 1/5 — Absolutely terrible *2022-02-14, version 1.7.14* The app works better than the liter box. The liter box is absolutely terrible. It’s gets clogged and I have to mess with this thing more than I did whenever I had a regular scoopable cat box. WASTE OF MONEY ### 1/5 — Always stuck *2022-02-06, version 1.7.14* App consistently gets stuck trying to up date visit times. ### 1/5 — App don’t work *2021-10-28, version 1.6.13* App quit working it won’t allow me to click on anything it will allow me to refresh the cats history but won’t fully refresh it just loads forever ### 1/5 — Major errors *2021-10-01, version 1.6.13* Cleaning cycle pauses when cat enters, but “resumes” only when you click in the app. So it will stay stuck mid cleaning, with shovel down. Till you initiate it to clean. THEN it RESUMES. So if they pooped, you have a disaster. It heats it up to dry the granuals without doing the first steps over. I have two cat genies and 4 cats... the other issue is that I can’t use cat activation cleanings on both unless they allow a rule that they don’t clean at the same time. ### 1/5 — Doesn’t work *2021-07-27, version 1.6.13* I love my CatGenie, but this app needs to be fixed. It’s literally unusable unless you delete it and re-download it EVERY time you use it. Otherwise the home page will not let me press anything. If my CatGenie ever stops working, I’m going to try to find a different self-cleaning litter box because this company is so incredibly unprofessional. You charge an ungodly amount of money for a product with a selling point of being able to use it with an app, and then the app doesn’t even work. I could get over that if it at least stayed connected. Any time my internet or WiFi blips out the app thinks it has lost connection to the unit, even when it comes back on. Now I have to uninstall and then reinstall to get it to give me any notifications. So I can’t update the times or even use the app to order replacements. It’s frozen. Close it. Reopen it. Same. Frozen. Useless. ### 1/5 — Keeps resetting to manual by itself *2021-03-06, version 1.4.17* I have the box set to time activation. The Cat genie app keeps resetting the cat genie to manual. I realized this when my cats start to pee on the couch because their box is dirty. This has happened at least 5 times in the last two months. So I started checking the app everyday to make sure it didn’t reset itself to manual clean. I forgot to check Thursday and Friday. Last night there was pee AGAIN on the leather couch. After having the previous CatGenie 120 for 10 years (with one replacement), I was looking forward to a newer updated version of the CatGenie 120.... which is the CatGenie AI I spent $400 on a “smart” CatGenie that has now turned my $2000 couch into a litter box. I am very frustrated. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Premium price tag for mediocre app *2026-03-09, version 1.8.217* So, you get a 500 dollar piece of hardware, and get a mediocre app, like I can’t even do an on-demand activation of a clean cycle if auto is not on… Come on guys! I can’t have the auto cycle on because my cats freak out, and every time I see the perfect time to turn on the cleaning cycle I have to go all the way down to the basement to push the dang button, it almost defeats the whole purpose of this app. Please enable this. ### 1/5 — Useless *2025-07-03, version 1.8.217* App does not work. I chatted with a rep the first time it happened & they had me uninstall & reinstall the app & assured me this would resolve the problem even when I expressed concerns. Fewer & fewer washes are being tracked on the app now & I'm not going through hassle of uninstalling, reinstalling, & setting up my unit every couple of weeks. They should just fix the app so it works properly, given the amount of money these things cost…. ### 1/5 — Fix the app *2024-06-08, version 1.8.123* $600 in a machine which app takes 4 years to be fixed… still waiting for you guys to get your thing together and make the app work… ### 1/5 — Cat genie will not connect to app *2023-09-20, version 1.8.55* Simple as that. The cat genie DOES NOT CONNECT TO THE APP. ### 1/5 — They make rules up as they go *2023-02-04, version 1.7.67* I’ve had every generation of this box. Been a long time user of this product for 13 years or so as I’m a cat breeder. They have always been great with customer service. I took my 120 out to re do my floor. I put it back in and forgot the settings. Called and got assistance to do so. I wanted to run the drain setting and that’s what she did with me. 3 days later I called to do the drain cycle again because I got my new (ai unit) second box for the house and wanted to move the old one and with snow here I didn’t want to dump. The tech said I’d have to mail my brain back for a inspection before getting any more help due to it sitting for a long period of time. I stated I don’t have any issues just need the instructions that I got a few days prior. She said because it sat for a while that they needed to check it for a small fee of $35. Keep in mind I have to pack and deliver this and be without the box again. Needless to say, nowhere in the manual does it state that you can’t have it sit. They are pushing more dependencies in order to get help now. I regret my last purchase and now as a breeder who often recommends this product……I’ll no longer be their customer and sales person. I’ll be looking into the litter robot (a better product that doesn’t make you dependent on spending money with them). Keep in mind, I haven’t “hacked” my box. I do annual cleanings. I don’t use their litter but I do use the wash carts. I also googled the info they refused to give me because they want me to pay. No more for me. I can’t remove the last scheduled activation. I’m using cat activation mode so I don’t need to schedule and waste the cleaning fluid. This is app developer 101 level stuff. ### 1/5 — Has stupid limitations and settings *2022-10-09, version 1.7.67* I would love to say that this is a simple app and I can setup my CatGenie and forget about but no….. because they have a max time of 10 hours for “do not disturb” for cat activation. IT IS THE STUPIDEST THING! I think I would know how to run my house hold. I have a little one and need more than 10 hours at night because of how loud a cycle is and where my unit is located. So now, each and every single night, I have to change it over to manual so that it doesn’t activate at 530 in the morning. Fix this! I discovered that the start date Is determined automatically so there were a number of days where the device was not in use. I just recently paired the app and it seems to work great. No issues connecting or configuring. Very pleased. Would like to see the ability to reset the diary. We have a couple of cats that jump in and out so it triggers a visit- maybe a time frame like 5 mins. before it counts as a visit. This has definitely helped with litter box behaviour issues and saving time. Spouse teased me for about a week, not anymore. We should have made this investment along time ago. Also, it may be helpful for those with multi cats to identify which cat is frequent user, could be a health indicator. ### 4/5 — Great so far *2023-04-30, version 1.7.67* So far I’m pretty happy with the app. It is responsive for what it needs to do. The UX is not perfect but there are some functionality that I know appreciate - I have been a Catgenie owner pre-AI for some time. ### 4/5 — Great, but *2021-03-22, version 1.5.1* I have had the catgenie app for about a week and it does almost everything I expect it to. I only have a couple issues with it 1) my cats sometimes like to jump in and out of the litter box multiple times before the 10 minute cat activation countdown is done. That is fine, except in my diary and in my catgenie health indicator, it dings the health score of my CatGenie, prompting me to buy another catgenie (I only have two cats, so no) or to clean my catgenie more often. I would like to see multiple visits within a short time span (say 10 minutes) only count as one visit in the health indicator score. 2) I wish it had the functionality of determining which cat was using the catgenie. ### 4/5 — Product improvement (one step at a time) *2020-05-29, version 1.3.10* I’ve had a CatGenie for almost a decade (multiple units), and I’ve been asking for smartphone compatibility and an app for many years. I’m happy to see that the manufacturer is finally taking baby steps towards that. That said: ••••••Connectivity•••••• The app is fairly easy to set up, but feels somewhat basic. For one, you can only connect a single mobile user to it (one phone number only; not sure about the number of devices per number) - that is disappointing. ••••••Added Features•••••• The CatGenie AI and this app basically digitalize the original unit’s control pad and make it WiFi accessible. Beyond that, it doesn’t offer much. A lot of it seems a bit gimmicky, such as adding my cats’ profiles, incl. their birthdays, breed, or pictures. The app is NOT able to distinguish between different cats, although it alludes that it can. Its activity log is really just a page of time stamps. Although useful, it doesn’t do anything with the data - no analysis or even a practical display of it.*** I do appreciate the progress bar for the cleaning cycle, as well as the count on how many cycles the cartridge has left. However, the progress bar is in ‘% completed,’ where a countdown timer with ‘minutes remaining’ would be more sensible and more transparent (FYI: a full cycle lasts 40 minutes). ••••••In Conclusion•••••• This has never been a product that’s made enormous advances at a time, and the CatGenie as a product overall has got its flaws for sure. Nevertheless, it does beat scooping cat litter by a country mile. Be patient, it’ll get better - it always does (hardware & software both). The app does add value to the CatGenie - I’d give the app 3 stars, 4 stars for the product overall. ***a recent update has added a graph display under the ‘activity’ tab. It used to be just time stamp log entries. Looks better now, provides a better display of usage stats (updated 05/29/20) ### 4/5 — Awesome Product and App *2020-02-05, version 1.2.11* So this is my 3rd CatGenie!! Each one better than the last!!! I have 3 cats and I purchased the AI version to have the recirculated air (keeps the smells from filling the house). Plus it talks to you verses beeping at you!! The app is awesome and I would have given 5 stars but nothing is perfect!! Everything works fine except the events and I really don’t care about that.. keep up the good work👍🏻 ### 4/5 — All-But Perfect Utility for Excellent Litter Solution *2020-01-23, version 1.2.11* I had no problems whatsoever connecting the app on the iPhone and iPad; nor any issues connecting to WiFi. The ability to see how many cycles are left on the cartridge is very useful. In fact, CatGenie litter boxes are so very good, you forget about them, and thus would fail to check the cartridge levels. Happily, the new CatGenie A.I. lets you immediately know the cartridge status, as well as alert to any issues. Following a power failure (not sure if this is what caused it), I did get a ‘low water pressure’ alert that turned out to be false. The water pressure in my home is very high (90 psi+) — so high, it needs to be stepped down using a bell valve. So not sure what the alert was about, but was effortless to correct by simply pushing a button on the app for the cycle to continue. A coupla App bugaboos: 1. Visit alerts do not universally clear as having been acknowledged across devices. So I get an alert on my watch, my iPhone, my iPad, and my MacBook. Alerts should clear across ALL devices when viewed on one. 2, The App is iPhone-compliant, but sideways on the iPad. This would be easy to fix by using a different envelope, and should be. 3. I have only one cat, and it is unclear to me how the device recognizes one cat from another in multi-cat households. Does it do this? And if so, how? Via the vet-injected chip ID? 4. I’d like to see the data collected for my cat graphed more usefully so that I can see, at a glance, usage patterns. 5. I’d like to see usage metrics compared to cats of similar profile, to see if there are outlier conditions to be checked out. Currently, there are NO usage graphs (only a list of date/time-stamped visits), and there should be. All that being said, this App is good and an excellent addition to the vastly-improved CatGenie device. If you go to Amazon, you can see my thorough review of the device, itself.
