## What is Cat's Eye?

The manual camera with the real aperture of iPhone 18 Pro.

◉ Real aperture from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4 on iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: the blades move, it isn't simulated blur
◉ Shutter, aperture, ISO and zoom always in view, each a turn of your thumb away: no menus, no hidden screens
◉ Focus peaking that measures distance, zebras, histogram and white balance in Kelvin
◉ HEIF, JPEG or ProRAW, up to 48 MP
◉ In AUTO, Apple's processing: Deep Fusion and Smart HDR
◉ One-time purchase. No subscription. No account.

A REAL APERTURE — iPhone 18 Pro

iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max have an aperture with blades, from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4. In Cat's Eye, the ring moves them: close it and less light comes in and the sharp zone grows, like on an SLR, and the photo records the real aperture.

And you can see it: with peaking on, close the aperture and the zone marked in red widens in front of you, until the whole background comes into focus.

AUTO — POINT AND SHOOT

Just want a good photo? In AUTO the screen stays clean: frame and shoot. The photo is the instant you tap, and you can take the next one right away.

MANUAL — YOU'RE IN CONTROL

Tap the mode button, top left, and the four rings appear, still on automatic. Tap again and you're in M, with the values the camera was using. Each control sits in a corner, on a quarter ring you turn with your thumb.

• Shutter speed and ISO through the hardware, not simulated.
• White balance automatic or set in Kelvin, from 2500 to 9000 K.
• Exposure compensation by sliding your finger over the image.

No mode dial: every ring has its own A position. Take the aperture off A and you're in Av; the shutter, Tv; both, M; only the ISO, P. The mode button always tells you which mode you're in, and the data line shows in green what you chose.

PEAKING, ZEBRAS AND HISTOGRAM

• Peaking marks in red what is at the focus distance, measured with the LiDAR scanner: background leaves don't light up, and a dark subject doesn't go unmarked. On iPhones without LiDAR it marks sharp edges, like other cameras.
• Zebras stripe what is about to blow out, before you shoot.
• RGB histogram always in view, if you want it.

FOCUS YOUR WAY

• Tap to focus and meter there.
• Press and hold to lock focus and exposure.
• Double tap to track the subject: focus follows it.
• Slide sideways to focus by hand; it returns to auto by itself after 3 seconds.

IT TEACHES ITSELF

The first time you make each gesture, a one-line hint tells you what else you can do there. Five cards on first launch and a Gestures screen in Settings.

AND ALSO

• Flash, torch, burst and timer in a quick menu; the shutter shows the mode you chose.
• 5- and 10-second timer: the rear light blinks during the countdown, so whoever is posing knows when the shot is taken.
• Shoot with the volume buttons too.
• Grid, and a level that turns green when the phone is straight.
• Trash in the viewer: delete a photo from your library and from the app.
• Works in all four orientations, with labels always upright.
• Designed for Liquid Glass on iOS 26 and later.

WHAT EACH iPhone DOES

• iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max: the aperture truly moves, from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4, and peaking measures distance.
• Other iPhone Pro models with LiDAR: the complete manual camera and distance peaking, with a fixed aperture.
• All others: the complete manual camera, with the fixed aperture of their lens on display.

One-time purchase. No subscription. No account. Your photos go to your library and never leave your phone.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-09-25

Cat's Eye 1.2

• Peaking now measures DISTANCE, not contrast. It marks in red what is really at the focus distance, so background leaves no longer light up and a dark subject no longer goes unmarked. On iPhones with a LiDAR scanner; on the others it works as before.
• And with it you can see depth of field: close the aperture and the marked zone widens in front of you, until the whole background comes into focus. On iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max.
• While peaking is on, framing stays at 24 mm: measuring distance and zooming can't happen at the same time.
• The mode button always does the same thing: AUTO 1 with a clean screen, AUTO 2 with the four rings in view, and M with the values the camera was using. The setting that changed that cycle is gone.
• Press and hold now waits for the lens to focus before locking, and goes straight from one lock to another.
• If an aid is on but hidden because the camera is in AUTO 1, the viewfinder tells you how to see it.
• "Show the hints again" now answers, and says the first-launch cards come back too.
• The cards and the Gestures screen are up to date: they described the old mode-button cycle.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-09-22

This version doesn't change the app: it only brings its App Store page up to date.

1.1 brought the real iPhone 18 Pro aperture tuned on hardware, P mode, no shutter lag, and the settings of each photo in the viewer.

### 1.1 — 2026-09-21

Cat's Eye 1.1

• iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max: the bladed aperture, now tested and tuned with the iPhone in hand. The ring runs in classic thirds (ƒ/1.48 · 1.8 · 2 … 4), turns smoothly and the photo records the real aperture.
• The photo is the instant you tap, and the shutter is free again right away for the next one.
• Tap AUTO to switch to manual with the values the camera was using; tap again to go back to AUTO. With only the ISO set by hand, P mode.
• Manual focus by sliding sideways, and subject tracking (double tap) now keeps focus on the subject.
• MENU quick menu with flash, burst, timer and torch; the shutter shows the drive mode, and flash and torch show beside the data line.
• 5- and 10-second timer, with the rear light blinking during the countdown.
• White balance slider, from 2500 to 9000 K.
• It teaches itself: hints the first time, cards on first launch and the Gestures screen in Settings.
• Trash in the viewer, shooting with the volume buttons and a design made for Liquid Glass.
• In the photo viewer, a button shows the settings each photo was taken with: shutter, aperture, ISO, focal length and exposure compensation.
• Many fixes: no photo is lost when you leave the app, full VoiceOver and a data line that always fits.

The exposure series and the aperture series from 1.0 are retired: they didn't deliver the quality this app aims for. They'll be back, rebuilt, in a future version.
