## What is CCAS | VFR Collision Avoidance?

CCAS is an aircraft collision avoidance system, especially used by VFR pilots. CCAS operates in lower airspaces, depending on the terrain, from ground level up to 5,000 ft above ground level (AGL).

- Safety Without Barriers -

We firmly believe that safety in general aviation should not be a question of cost. The CCAS network is entirely free of charge, funded by donations, and designed to be universally accessible. With a focus on functionality over "bling," it ensures that pilots of recreational aircraft can benefit from a reliable interoperable network for collision alerts. Our mission is simple: "see, BE SEEN, and avoid."

- How it works -

Each CCAS client periodically sends its own position to the CCAS network. On the other hand, the CCAS servers broadcast all relevant traffic around this position back to the CCAS client. By using standard TCP connections combined with a highly optimized protocol, this operates almost in real-time.

Besides other CCAS users, the server also broadcasts traffic information from different other sources, such as ADS-B, as well as OGN/FLARM, to ensure maximum traffic awareness.

You can easily connect CCAS to your navigation app (e.g. SkyDemon, Foreflight, VFRnav, ...). This means that traffic is displayed directly on the moving map. Traffic data is transmitted via GDL90. In addition, CCAS can be used as a proxy for other traffic data sources such as Stratux, FLARM or ADS-B receivers.

- How to use -

In order to use CCAS and help increase safety in the air, just download the official CCAS client app. It's completely free by the way!

Important note on privacy: No registration is necessary. Upon the first launch of the client, a random ID is generated on the device. Each position message is encrypted and shared only with other CCAS users in immediate proximity. No flight history is saved.

- How to contribute -

Simply use the client. Every pilot using CCAS makes an important contribution to make the airspace safe.

## Key features

- Real-time air traffic alerts
- Integrates with navigation apps
- Displays ADS-B and OGN/FLARM traffic

## Frequently asked questions about CCAS | VFR Collision Avoidance

### What is CCAS used for?

CCAS is a free air traffic avoidance system designed for VFR pilots. It provides real-time alerts about nearby aircraft and other traffic sources, helping to prevent collisions in lower airspace.

### How does CCAS work?

Each CCAS user shares their position with the network, and in return, receives relevant traffic information from CCAS servers. This data includes other CCAS users, as well as traffic from sources like ADS-B and OGN/FLARM, ensuring maximum visibility.

### Can CCAS connect to other navigation apps?

Yes, CCAS can easily connect to popular navigation applications such as SkyDemon, ForeFlight, and VFRnav. Traffic information is then displayed directly on your mobile navigation map via GDL90.

### Is CCAS free to use?

Yes, CCAS is entirely free to use. It is funded by donations and designed to be accessible to all pilots, focusing on essential safety functionality rather than costly features.

### Does CCAS require registration?

No, CCAS does not require any registration. Upon first launch, a random identifier is generated on your device, and your position messages are encrypted and shared only with nearby CCAS network users.

### What is the age rating for CCAS?

CCAS has an age rating of 4+, making it suitable for a wide range of users. The app is designed for pilots and focuses on aviation safety information.

### How often is CCAS updated?

The latest version of CCAS is 26.06.0, which was last updated on June 11, 2026. This indicates a commitment to ongoing development and maintenance of the application.

### What devices does CCAS support?
