## What is Chandi Path?

The Chandi Path

The Chandi Path is the most ancient and complete system of mantra worship for the Divine Mother Goddess in the Hindu tradition. The name Chandi comes from the root word “Chand,” which means “to tear apart, cut asunder.” The meaning of the name of the Goddess Chandi is “She Who Cuts Duality, Tears Apart Thought.” The recitation of the Chandi Path is designed to guide our awareness into the presence of the Divine Mother Goddess Chandi, so that all conflict is resolved and Consciousness becomes absorbed in the greatest Peace.

The Chandi Path comes from the Markandeya Purana, one of the greatest spiritual epics of Hindu spirituality. It tells the story of how a Businessman and a King performed sadhana to discover the Glory of the Goddess. It describes what sadhana they performed, and ultimately what they found from its practice.

About the Author

Swami Satyananda Saraswati is among the foremost scholars and translators of Sanskrit traditions in modern times. He is the author of nearly 60 books in nine different languages, representing a significant contribution to the understanding of Hinduism and Vedic religious practices.

Swamiji was initiated into the Saraswati group of the Dashnami lineage of Adi Shankaracharya in 1971. He is a scholar living a life of worship with both spiritual knowledge and its practical application. His sadhana includes the Chandi Path and sacred fire ceremony as his primary systems of spiritual discipline.

He practiced the recitation of the Chandi Path in the snows of the Himalayas and in the hot springs of Bakreswar. Through this rigorous penance, he moved beyond the influences of heat and cold, and practiced long asana sadhana, sitting in one posture reciting the texts for more than 16 hours at a time without moving. Through his experiences of walking the length and breadth of the Himalayas in India, Swamiji fell in love with Sanskrit and became proficient in numerous languages including Bengali and Hindi. He performed the Sahasra Chandi Yajna seven times, with 21 years of continuous worship without break. Wherever he went, he would learn the local systems of worship and inspire those around him to participate.

Swamiji’s expertise and experience span many different religious traditions, and his realizations and teachings make him a living example of Ramakrishna’s Gospel, “as many as there are individuals, so many are the paths to God.”

In 1979, Swamiji met Shree Maa when he was performing a vow of worship in a small temple in the interior of West Bengal. They toured India together, spreading their divine love and inspiration by performing pujas, homas, and sharing their realizations and teaching the methods of spiritual practice.

In 1984, they traveled to America and established the Devi Mandir in Napa, California, where he and Shree Maa performed three Sahasra Chandi Yajnas, over nine years of continuous chanting without break. Today they have ashrams in North America, Central America, South America, and India, and centers around the world. They lovingly share their knowledge and resources to give every individual an opportunity to access these spiritual teachings.

*2018-10-25*

This is absolutely the best version of Chandi Patha with which to chant from. The transliteration is wonderful & the whole package of auxiliary stotrams are present. ... Moreover the translation is uniquely understandable from the POV of the underlying meaning of the text.

The app version (compared with hard copy book) adds the further dimension of hyperlinking from the TOC to specific sections of the text. ... Not to mention the convenience of using an iPad rather than lugging around a thick volume!

Thank you, Swamiji for bringing all this ancient work into the 21st Century!

This is an excellent translation of the Chandi Path, it even contains the original Sanskrit, transliteration and translation! It is great for chanting from the Chandi or for study. The translation goes in to many hidden meanings in the story and really gives a divine and beautiful understanding of this scripture and it's story of freeing us from selfishness and egotism. For those who chant this text it also contains all the angas one would want to use to increase the shakti of the Chandi.

This collection explores various ways to chant the Chandi Path, with translations in English, and potentially other languages in the future. Our website already offers free downloads in Bengali, Devanagari, Dutch, Hindi, Portuguese, Roman, Spanish, Tamil, and Telugu at: https://www.shreemaa.org/books-in-other-languages-draffft/. This preface covers administrative updates and a brief history of our Chandi studies, illustrating how our sadhana evolved from brief daily worship to extended sessions of 16-18 hours a day. Now, I wish to delve into what these works achieve, how they function, and the transformative impact of making them the core of our lifestyle.

The Chandi Path tells the story of “She Who Tears Apart Thoughts.” The Great Ego, after performing a rigorous spiritual discipline, asked Brahma for immortality. At the completion of the seven hundred verses, the Goddess granted boons to the King, named Good Thoughts, and the Businessman, named Pure Intuitive Perception. The King wished for an eternal kingdom of Good Thoughts, free from negativity, and the Goddess granted this, urging him to think of Her in all actions. The Businessman, having attained the Goddess, desired nothing more, and was blessed to remain with Her, spreading the teachings of the Chandi.
This story illustrates our forgotten divinity and the path to remembrance through devoted action, chanting, and service to the Divine Mother. Performing the Chandi Yajna involves uniting the inner and outer lights, drawing yantras, and offering oblations to the Divine Mother with each verse of the Chandi Path. This sacred fire ceremony enhances the mantra's energy, merging the physical fire with the divine light of meditation.
The Tantra Durga Bijamantratmaka elucidates the vibrations conveyed by each verse of the Chandi, expressed through Bija Mantras. Reciting these mantras aligns us with the vibrations of divinity, reducing negativity and embodying divine qualities.
The Samasti Chandi Bijamantratmaka integrates these vibrations within the Chandi Path, empowering the mantras and making the Goddess a living reality.
The Srīcaṇḍikā Navākṣarī Triśatī Stotram and Namavali explore the nine-lettered Navarna Mantra, presenting three hundred names that reveal the esoteric meanings of the mantra. These names reflect the nine forms of Durga and other significant aspects, offering a comprehensive understanding of the mantra's power.
Combining these texts offers a profound exploration of Chandi and Her sadhana, revealing the transformative power of devotion and disciplined practice. The ancient Rishis expressed their love for the divine through poetry, capturing the ineffable experience of communion with the Goddess. This love affair with the Divine Mother transcends definition, growing in intensity and leading to a state of unspeakable, undefinable bliss.

Reciting the Chandi Path, I experienced a profound transcendence, seeing myself as part of the divine whole. This feeling of unity with all existence, where every vibration is an expression of divine love, lasted for months. Although I returned to duality, I felt compelled to share this experience, translating and teaching the Chandi Path, and establishing temples worldwide.
