## What is ChatterBoards AAC?

The cheapest AAC app compared to others offering the same features.
Chatterboards was professionally developed, in collaboration with Speech Therapists and end users, with the aim of providing people in need with an AAC app that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars or require monthly subscriptions.

ChatterBoards is an easy to use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) aid for people of any age who have speech or language difficulties. This can include people with autism, aphasia, apraxia, stroke, downs syndrome, or any other disability that causes the individual to have difficulties in communicating or expressing their needs.

Continually updated with new features and enhancements. All suggestions and/or requests are considered.

Full feature list:

- Create and use vocabulary boards, including multiple paged vocabularies, for forming sentences.
- Board levels. Levels provide a way to progressively build up a user's vocabulary. A limited set of words can be displayed at each level, progressively building up the number of words shown until the full board is used. Words/Tiles do not move position between boards, allowing users to remember and learn a number of words at a time without them moving.
- Create and use basic phrase boards which associate a basic full phrase/sentence to an individual button, providing quick responses or questions for basic communication needs.
- Ability to create and switch between different profiles, each with their own set of boards and settings. Ideal for households with multiple users, or specialists with multiple clients.
- All board dimensions supported up to and included 16x16 (rows x columns) per page.
- Fully customisable buttons. Change their text, colour (border and background), image and audio playback
- Change a buttons image from either your devices photo library, camera, or from over 4000 sample symbols.
- Includes over 3500 symbols provided by Mulberry Symbols (https://mulberrysymbols.org/)
- Includes over 500 symbols designed by Freepik and distributed by Flaticon.
- Save images from the internet, or from your own symbol libraries, into your photo library for use.
- Supports text-only and image-only buttons.
- Fully customisable button audio. Use the Text to Speech synthesiser or record your own voice(s) using your devices microphone.
- Keyboard input mode. Alternatively to using symbols, manually enter desired vocabulary with keyboard input.
- Text to Speech supports all iOS packaged languages (over 50 languages/dialects). Includes multiple male and female voices for English.
- Change rate, pitch and/or volume of Text to Speech synthesiser.
- Set App wide voice/language, rate, pitch and volume default values for the Text to Speech synthesiser.
- Fully customisable boards. Change dimensions anytime, add, delete and move buttons as desired.
- Copy existing boards to create new permutations
- Copy/paste individual tiles
- Share boards with other users of ChatterBoards. Use Apple AirDrop, Mail, Message, or any other valid installed application on your device.
- The ability to lock controls, e.g. editing. Like a parental control.
- Supports both iPhone and iPad

Also a number of Arasaac Symbols are included as samples (approx. 20).

### 5/5 — amazing!

*2026-03-16, version 2.5.0*

this is very very helpful and simple to use.
i like how its versatile. you can add custom pictures and voice recordings. and they have example photos for you so you dont have to go and find a picture for each word. my brother can use it easily. the app freezes rarely but if it does its no problem to just close and open again.

### 5/5 — I love this app

*2025-10-13, version 2.5.0*

This app has been a life changer my uncle who is nonverbal and has Down syndrome uses this every day

### 2/5 — Share feature gone

*2025-07-15, version 2.5.0*

Please fix the share feature that is no longer an option in the app! It does not work and makes it impossible to share boards between family members devices.

### 3/5 — Good app, but tedious

*2025-05-03, version 2.5.0*

So, ChatterBoards was my first aac app. While I found it useful, I found it tedious to put together a page. I also didn’t really care for the robotic voices, so I decided that it wasn’t for me. Now, I’m not saying it’s a bad app. Just not for me. I will eventually come back to ChatterBoards once I have another device.

I do recommend ChatterBoards for those that can’t afford something like Proloquo2go, and have to do things alone, as I did.

### 5/5 — This app is amazing for severe ME/CFS!

*2025-04-28, version 2.5.0*

I have a medical condition that causes me to sometimes lose most of my ability to speak and move, and during these health episodes I have a lot of needs that most caregivers wouldn’t understand without being taught… being mostly paralyzed and unable to talk is no fun, and so having this happen again was my biggest fear, until I found this app. I was so happy to find that is super easy to use with lots of different ways to customize it, and I was able to make several various boards which are all very intuitively simple. It is giving me a huge sense of relief to have this tool in case I ever lose my ability to speak again! My only complaint is that when choosing the icon picture you have to scroll through literally hundreds- they could make it easier to find the clip art you’re looking for with a search function, but I’m still glad this app is free and so great in many ways.

### 5/5 — simple and customizable

*2025-04-04, version 2.5.0*

Glad I found this app and now kid friendly and easy to use! Also fully customizable thanks

### 5/5 — I love this

*2025-03-04, version 2.5.0*

This Prefect for my nonverbal autistic son because it allows him to say want he wants it is amazing because he uses it at school and every day it is perfect for children or adults who are nonverbal

### 1/5 — No voice in latest iOS version

*2024-12-19, version 2.5.0*

No voice in latest iOS. Version 18.2

### 5/5 — Amazing app!

*2024-11-12, version 2.5.0*

This app is incredibly easy for even my lowest nonverbal students. We change boards every month to match our target words for our unit. I love how easy it is to add new buttons. Also so cool that I can share boards via airdrop! I can make boards on my iPad and share with student iPads. Also love that I can have it on my phone for moments when I don’t have student iPads with me. They can tell me what they need anywhere. Even better that it’s free! But I would pay for sure. Thank you, Paul for designing this easy to use app so our kiddos have a voice!

### 4/5 — this app is amazing just one thing.

*2024-09-07, version 2.5.0*

so i just got this app today, its already been so helpful for me. but whenever i try to use the sounds it doesn’t work. please let me know how to fix this

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.5.0 — 2020-11-15

Updates to ensure support for latest iOS versions.

### 2.4.0 — 2020-01-27

New feature: Keyboard Input Mode!
Alternatively to using symbols to form sentences, manually enter words using a keyboard. Switch easily between symbol based input and keyboard input.

This update also includes improvements to the sentence bar. Text is now more clearly displayed.

### 2.3.1 — 2020-01-12

New Feature: Board Levels!
Board levels provide a way to progressively build up a user's vocabulary. A limited number of Tiles/words on a board can be displayed at different levels, without the grid size changing. The words therefore remain in the same position between levels, allowing end users to remember and learn the positions. Levels can be set up in such a way that users are initially introduced to a smaller set of words and then as they become more comfortable with the app slowly build up to higher levels where more words are displayed.

This update also includes some extra improvements:
- Maximum possible grid size increased from 8x8 to 16x16.
- Double-tap the delete button in the sentence builder to clear the whole sentence.

You ask, we listen! Two new features requested by our users:
- The ability to lock controls, e.g. editing. Like a parental control, setup and create your boards and then lock any editing capabilities before passing the app to your end user.
- Copy/paste feature for tiles. Before you could only copy a whole board, now you can copy individual tiles. Find the corresponding controls/button in the bottom left of the toolbar in the edit tile screen.
