### 5/5 — BIG PROBLEM PLS FIX THIS

*2024-08-02*

soooo i was going to add a remix to the game but when i pasted the link for the chess game the game crashed and kick me out making the remix chess games litterally unplayable 😖

**Developer response:** Thank you for reporting, I could reproduce the issue and it will be fixed in the next version. If you enter just the code instead of the full link it will work as it should. Sorry about the crash!

### 5/5 — The start of something legendary

*2024-07-07, version 1.6.1*

Chastity's Chess Review: Chess Remix

Strengths

It offers standard Chess but also the largest list of variants of any game on Steam, including Chess960, Crazyhouse, Atomic, Absorption, Elimination, Capture the Leader, Losing Chess, Three Check Chess, Pocket Knights, Shatar, No Check Chess, En Passant is forced, and the ability to create customized rules of each of these.

Also included are the 3 main Asian variants: Shogi, Xiangqi, and Janggi.
Historical Chess games and other non-chess games like Tic-Tac-Toe and Checkers

It offers a customizable theme appearance for backgrounds and pieces.

Weaknesses

Not all features are fully implemented, such as the "levels section". This will probably be fixed in future updates.

The artificial intelligence is rather weak and may be okay for people who don't play very well but disappointing to skilled chess players. This AI can be improved using fairy stockfish if the developer wishes.

Conclusion

This game is worth the price if you are a hard core chess player or play other board games involving strategy. It's also for the creative types who want to make their own rules and create board games and test them with AI.

I will update this review as needed when future updates are made.

### 5/5 — AI uses too much CPU

*2024-02-26, version 1.5.10*

When I do an AI game, my devices tend to get really hot, since the AI uses too much CPU, which causes the CPU to be overworked.

### 4/5 — Cool but it breaks sometimes

*2024-02-07, version 1.5.10*

Very cool game but it breaks and i cant do a turn sometimes. Also tic tac toe wont work for some reason.

### 4/5 — Great game but a little issue

*2023-08-16, version 1.4.16*

This app really has a great idea. Being able to make your own variants of chess and create your own pieces with rules on how they move is great. But there does seem to be an issue with the way you actually make those rules. I may just be stupid, but when I go to make one and set up the way it should move, it doesn’t work the way it should. For example, I wanted to make a piece that could go four spaces forward, horizontally and diagonally. When you go to make a piece it gives you two options, simple and advanced. I used the simple one where it shows a board and you can put in how many spaces it can move, where a piece can jump to, and you can control whether its able to move or capture. So I set it to where it could slide four spaces forward horizontally and diagonally. But when I made a game to test out how the piece worked, the piece was only able to land on the space four squares forward. In the simple menu, it says that the piece should be able to land on any of the squares unless its path is obstructed. So clearly something isn’t working as intended there. The advanced piece settings are a little confusing as well, and I think that it would better to have the same screen as the simple option showing a board where you can press the buttons and see the squares where it should be able to move, which isn't in the advanced options. But I understand if thats somehow not possible. Overall thats just my small gripe about it and it’s possible that I just haven’t figured something out yet. I hope the developer sees this review and considers changing the movement controls of the advanced section to be like the simple one, so it’s easier to control how it moves while keeping the other cool options you have in the advanced section.

### 5/5 — Can’t get in game

*2023-01-01, version 1.3.10*

Help I’m giving you 5 stars but I can’t get in the game.

### 4/5 — Nice chess games with many variations of chess

*2022-12-02, version 1.3.9*

I’ve played Xiangqi and shogi on here. Love the app and the cute pieces. Only issue is the AI is on the weak side and the game is executed online and not local. But it can’t be beat in this niche.

### 5/5 — So good

*2022-08-18, version 1.2.9*

Good but more variants and play, create for free, thanks!

### 5/5 — Having a little error

*2021-12-30, version 1.1.5*

Besides the crashing, I keep trying to edit my board but it keeps not saving even when I finish editing (I’m trying to add castling pieces)

Edit: just forgot to turn on castling

### 5/5 — Về Chess Remix

*2021-10-09, version 1.1.5*

Tôi thích Chess Remix rất nhiều vì tôi có thể chơi được ngàn loại cờ trên thế giới.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — App now subscription only

*2026-07-31, version 1.10.1*

Can’t bypass the “app development isn’t free” paywall.

### 1/5 — Wasted time

*2023-08-09, version 1.4.16*

Wasted time. Waiting for moves unnecessarily

### 1/5 — Paying

*2023-01-13, version 1.3.12*

You basically have to pay to be creative! MAKE IT COST NOTHING!

### 1/5 — Makes you watch an ad if you want to play more than a certain amount of games

*2022-12-31, version 1.3.10*

You need to pay or watch an ad if you want to play more than a certain amount of games

### 1/5 — Unplayable

*2022-09-30, version 1.3.5*

Version 1.3.3 and 1.3.4 and 1.3.5 causes Xiangqi to randomly force close the app.

Xiangqi and Alber's Courier and Grant Acedrex and Courier AI at easiest level take a long time to accept a move. Blue spinner usually just do nothing loops without indicating possible moves allowed. So I am not allowed to enter a move. Response time is either painfully slow or non-existant.

Result is unplayable. Worked for me before the last three recent updates.

Needs an Undo button too.

Those media playback buttons exit the game instead of playing back the moves list as expected.

I recommend these remixed settings as defaults: leaders cannot face, and pawns promote to Lost piece.

iPad Air (1st generation) and version 12.x OS battery fast drains with a hot display while blue progress spinner dawdles.

### 2/5 — Great Designing idea, but serious problems

*2026-04-20, version 1.8.2*

I tried out the subscription for a little while where you can make your own pieces and board set ups and it is like no other app/game I’ve found. It’s quite creative.

This app’s most major problem is all of the calculating is done on your device which overheats your device no matter what device you use, and then the app freezes or crashes. It makes the app nearly unplayable.

Another thing that hás to be changed is the simple ability to take back a move. That is the dumbest feature that has to be paid for. Something so simple as that should be a given. When the computer captures a piece, sometimes I can’t even see what it captured because I can’t even preview back a move 🙄

### 3/5 — Why premium

*2024-08-05, version 1.6.1*

This game is good but the piece maker and the coolest stuff is premium and I don’t want to have to pay for it.
(Just play Omnichess)

### 3/5 — Cool App, AI weak

*2022-07-22, version 1.2.9*

The app is cool, however my main interest in it is to be able to play against the AI which isn’t currently particularly great because the AI is very weak. It doesn’t seem to calculate further than a single move in advance, as in regular chess it fell for simple forks with no compensation - another time it failed to take a minor piece with a pawn. If the AI were significantly improved (all that’s really necessary is some good calculation depth and piece weight assignments) then the app would be great.

### 4/5 — Excellent! But could be better

*2024-05-10, version 1.6.1*

I like to make chess variants that alter the rules in ways that are not possible here, but it’s as good as I could expect from an app. It would be cool if there were some other rules like, magnetic chess, anti-king, ultimate en passant, double move, and peace chess, ext. If there was more ways to combine the rules with each other that would greatly increase the possibilities for new games, but that can be difficult because sometimes rules clash and create new scenarios that require human creativity to solve. What if I want to move the opponents pieces, let pieces share a space, include a checker style capture, capture without moving, or play atomic crazyhouse chess? Overall this is a great app.

### 4/5 — As expected

*2024-02-10, version 1.5.10*

This is a really phenomenal app. It loses a star for a few quality of life issues. First, when selecting a Shogi pawn, the app thinks for about 20 seconds before showing the possible moves for a pawn. It should not take this long to calculate. Also, I wish there was a post-game evaluation bar, so you can see the state of the game and understand fluctuations.

If these two things were implemented, I would have no problem paying $22 one time for premium.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Starting out

*2026-08-01, version 1.10.1*

From a singular developer I’m enjoying the learning and exploration starting out. Going to delve deeper and discover how far this variant goes with its collection.

### 5/5 — Best Thing On The Actual App Store

*2025-12-12, version 1.8.2*

This is quite literally the best game on the App Store. There's THOUSANDS of games you can play, all with their own AIs that you can play against, AND you can make your own game, AND you can play with other people, AND you can learn to play chess and other board games like that! AND IT IS COMPLETELY FREE.

### 5/5 — 재밋다

*2025-09-26, version 1.8.2*

와

### 5/5 — Can't share created rules

*2025-01-23, version 1.8.0*

We should have the ability to share our created rules of a remix

### 5/5 — What?????

*2024-11-23, version 1.8.0*

If you go to style and go to name pieces you see all of these but when you create a chess board it doesn’t have those pieces like how what about those pieces I thought this game would be better and you can’t even create your piece for free stupid money with games just horrible but 5⭐️ so just add those pieces to the Remix and make the create your piece free

### 5/5 — ㅋㅋㅋ

*2024-10-25, version 1.8.0*

너무 재미있어요🥰🥰🥰

### 5/5 — 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩PLAY THIS GAMEEEEEEEEEE🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

*2024-09-13*

BEST GAME EVER BUT CAN U MAKE IT FREE SO WE CAN PLAY IT FOREVER

### 5/5 — Amazing! But I have a suggestion for a new feature…

*2024-08-26, version 1.7.0*

This app is amazing! But I wish there were more features, like in the piece creator, I wish we could make our own multi-step pieces, like how you made the Lion from Chu Shogi! I am basically saying I wish there was an option to make a created path of a piece you created multi step. That means they do NOT have to stop when they capture.

### 5/5 — idea for chess remix / also pls fix this

*2024-08-16, version 1.6.1*
