## What is Chess64?

Chess64 is a checkmate trainer. The puzzles never ask you for the best move, only for the forced one: every one ends in mate, and the whole difficulty is how deep the line runs and whether you can see all of it before you touch a piece.

WHAT YOU GET

• Eight depths, from a one-move mate to the long forcing lines of mate in 8+. The app carries 400k+ puzzles, completely offline, with 50,000 at every depth. Each one is generated for this app and verified by a chess engine, so the mate is forced and runs to exactly the depth stated. (What the free tier reaches is set out under FREE AND PRO below.)

• Spaced-repetition training. A puzzle you have solved comes back at growing intervals, timed to reach you just before the pattern would have faded. You set how many new puzzles and how many reviews you want in a day.

• Five bots to play against, each with a style of its own. Win enough of your recent games against one of the bots and the app tells you the next one up is a fair fight or not. Afterwards the review analyses the game: the tactics that were there, which of them you found, and the move that you missed.

• Pass and play: two people, one device, and no engine in the middle. Free. Leave the board where it is, turn it between moves, or turn only the black pieces so each player reads their own the right way up. Play with a clock or without one, and start a piece up or a piece down. These games are not added to your record or your statistics.

• A daily puzzle: one mate in 3, the same position for everyone, every day.

• A timed challenge: solve as many as you can before the clock runs out. Three wrong moves retire a puzzle and the next one arrives.

• Statistics that keep accuracy and solve rate apart instead of blurring them together, plus an activity calendar, results by depth, time-of-day performance, and the depths you are weakest at. Export all of it as CSV (Pro).

• Home-screen widgets: your streak at a glance, plus quick actions on the medium size.

WHAT IT DOES NOT DO

No ads. No tracking, no analytics, no third-party data collection of any kind. No account, no sign-in, no email address. Chess64 never asks to track you across apps. The daily reminder stays off until you turn it on, and you choose the days and the time, so nothing arrives unannounced.

FREE AND PRO

Free covers mate in 1 and mate in 2, with 5,000 puzzles at each of those two depths, plus the daily puzzle, full games against the first two bots, pass and play games with somebody next to you, streaks, badges, core statistics and the streak widget. No ads and no time limits.

Chess64 Pro is one purchase, not a subscription. It unlocks the other three bots and the review that follows a game, mate in 3 to 8+ with the full 50,000 puzzles at every depth, a difficulty filter from Beginner to Master, the timed challenge, spaced-repetition training, hints, full statistics with CSV export, and the medium widget. Later updates are included. The price is shown in the app and on the App Store in your own currency.

YOUR DATA

There are no Chess64 servers. Your progress backs up to your own private iCloud, comes back when you sign in on a new device, and syncs across your devices without passing through anything in between.

Turn iCloud off, or use no iCloud account at all, and Chess64 works the same way it always does; your progress simply stays on the one device.

Every puzzle ships inside the app and the bots think on your device, so once you are set up you can play with no connection at all.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.2.1 — 2026-08-30

Introducing Pass and Play! Play a full game with your opponent on one device, and it is free.

Decide first how you are sitting: leave the board where it is, turn it between moves so whoever is to play is always nearest, or keep it still and turn only the black pieces so each of you reads your own men the right way up.

Play with a clock or without one, and start a game a piece up or a piece down. A draw takes two: one player offers it, the other accepts or refuses. None of it is added to your record, your streak or your statistics.

Afterwards the review walks the game move by move and grades both players side by side: the tactics that were there, which of them each of you found, and where the game turned. The review is part of Chess64 Pro, exactly as it is after a game against a bot.

Also in this version: general improvements to animations and the chess engine.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-08-23

Play against the bots!

Five opponents, each with a style of its own. The first two are free.

Afterwards the review analyses the game: the tactics that were there, which of them you found, and the move that you missed. Your record against each one builds up as you play, and the app tells you when the next bot up is a fair fight.

Also in this version:

• Start a game a piece up when you want a better chance, or a piece down when you want a harder one. Those games are marked as odds games and left out of your record.
• A player score drawn from both bot games and puzzles.
• A Bots tab in Statistics: tactics found, record by opponent, and where you lose material. The CSV export includes it.
• Bot games back up and sync through your own private iCloud, like everything else.

Everything still runs on your device. No account, no ads, no tracking.

This version also includes general improvements.
